Takeover of the Narrators
Takeover of the Narrators

(Narrators 1-3 walk onstage.)

N1
Hello. I'm the narrator.

N2
So am I.

N3
And so am I.

ALL 3
We're Narrators--

N1
--One

N2
--Two

N3
--and Three.

N1
Tonight, instead of the planned skit, we have decided to commandeer this program, to go with the theme and become "UNMASKED."

DIRECTOR BOB
(bursts onto stage) Wait! You can't do that! It's not in the script!

N3
Why not?

SYLVIA
(enters) What? What's happened? Why hasn't my cue come yet? There were only supposed to be three lines before it.

N1
There has been a change of plans.

SYLVIA
Why wasn't I notified?

DIRECTOR
Indeed. Why?

N2
I dunno. (turns to N3) Why?

N3
(turns to N1) Why?

N1
Because if our director knew about our plans, he'd fire us.

N2
You mean like the logs we burnt in the fireplace last night? Yech. I see your point.

N3
Those were strange logs. They were all purple except for the one . . .

N2
The mono log.

N3
Yeah. (to N1) And you said that it took at least two logs for the fire, and those purple logs gave me the creeps, so you told me I'd have to dye a log brown.

N1
I meant "fire" as in kick us out of the play.

N2
Oh.

N3
(to Director) You were gonna kick us out of the play?

DIRECTOR
(guiltily) Well . . .

SYLVIA
(to Narrators) You ruined the play! This was gonna be my big break!

DIRECTOR
Sylvie, the skit was only five minutes long.

SYLVIA
Well, everybody has to start somewhere.

N1
Our point is that we aren't the dull "by the script" narrators you think we are.

N2
(to Director) And that the play you wrote doesn't fit this month's theme.

DIRECTOR
What??

N2
This month's theme is "UNMASKED," but the skit you wrote is about something totally different.

DIRECTOR
Well, I . . . uh . . . had trouble coming up with a plot.

N1
So it seems.

SYLVIA
Wow, I didn't even know the play was supposed to have a theme. You narrators really saved the day.

N3
Saving the day was my idea.

DIRECTOR
I'll just bet it was. I still don't get your point, though.

N1
Well, God made each one of us different, with different talents and personalities. Even us Narrators. To try to cover up what we are would be to cover up part of the uniqueness of God's creation.

DIRECTOR
I see.

N2
Yeah, I'd say it's pretty icy outside.

N3
And cold, too. I'm gonna go get my coat.

(N2 and N3 exit.)

N1
I guess that about wraps it up.

DIRECTOR
Yeah. (starts to leave, but then remembers something and turns back) Oh. I forgot to tell you. You're not fired.

N1
Thank you.

(Director, N1, and Sylvia exit.)

The End
