Hi everyone! After much debate I have decided to write a sequel to Author Unknown, while you probably could read this without reading Author Unknown, I would recommend reading it first. Please R&R:)
"What do we have?" Arika asked when she arrived on the scene.
The young man sighed. "Young female, appears to be of Hispanic descent, cause of death appears to be from two bullets to the chest."
"Do they have any leads?" she questioned as she pulled on a pair of latex gloves.
"They're questioning two people right now, but I really don't know."
She knelt down beside the body that had yet to be moved. She had been sleeping when her pager had went off, calling her in. Her job was difficult, but she was good at what she did. "Okay, let's get to work."
Selena stared in horror. "Why are you doing this?" she cried.
The person holding the gun didn't answer. Their finger squeezed the trigger. She fell backwards and hit the damp ground. Her body lay limply while a pool of blood formed underneath her.
Lola sighed and eased her foot off the accelerator. She was speeding. Bruce would laugh if he knew. He was always teasing her about her 'accidental' speeding. She smiled. She loved her husband, and their family. Yesterday had been Jaden's ninth birthday. It was hard to believe he was so old.
"Mommy?" A sleepy voice called from the backseat.
"Yes, Zoe?" she said with a glance in the rearview mirror.
"When will it be my turn to open presents and eat cake?" the three-year-old asked.
Lola laughed. "Not for several months I'm afraid.
The little girl sighed and leaned back against her seat. Then she leaned forward again. "Will the new baby be here before I get presents?"
Lola nodded. "Yes, it will." Lola frowned suddenly. She had seen something. She stopped and put the car into reverse. She gasped in horror. She shifted to park and opened her door. "Zoe, stay here. Don't get out, understand?"
"Yes, Mommy," Zoe said with a yawn.
Lola clambered down the bank to the sound of Lucas's sobs. "Lucas?"
She came to a stop a few feet away from him. He was clutching a blood covered Selena to his chest. "Lucas, is she?"
Lucas nodded and struggled to control the emotions fighting to overwhelm him.
Lola brought a shaky hand to her mouth. She couldn't be dead! Not Selena, no. This couldn't be happening. She turned quickly and ran up the bank. She pulled her cell phone from her purse and punched in Bruce's number.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Zoe asked worriedly.
"I'm okay, Zoe." She said. Bruce answered on the third ring. "Bruce, it's me."
"Lola, are you all right?" Bruce asked.
She stepped away from the car, so Zoe couldn't hear her. "B-Bruce, Selena…she's dead…" she gasped out.
"We're down by the river…I was driving home with Zoe and something caught my eye…." She shuddered and closed her eyes. "Lucas….he's down by the river…Selena's dead…..Bruce…" Her voice gave way and she began to sob.
"I'm going to call the police, Lola and I'll call Samuel. Then I'll be down." Bruce said. He hung up before she could answer.
"Mommy, what's wrong?" Zoe asked fearfully. She had heard Lola's sobs.
Lola bit her lip. "Zoe, Daddy will be here soon. I want you to stay in the car until he comes."
"Okay, Mommy," Zoe whispered.
"Good girl," Lola said before climbing back down the river's bank to where Lucas was still sobbing over Selena's body.
When Bruce finally arrived, Lola collapsed in his arms, sobbing. He ran a hand over her hair and tried to calm her.
Suddenly pain shot through her stomach. "Bruce," she whimpered.
"What?" he asked.
"The baby…" she muttered falling against his chest. "Something's wrong."
Bruce stared out the window. The doctor said that Lola was out of immediate danger, but he would be placing her on bed rest for the next few weeks. He sighed and leaned his head against the window's cool glass.
"Bruce?" Lola asked weakly.
He turned and walked over to her bed.
"Is Selena really…." She didn't finish.
He nodded and clenched his jaw. "Yes," it was whispered.
Bruce sat down beside her. "He's staying with Samuel."
"How did she die, Bruce?" Lola asked quietly.
Bruce felt a wave of rage sweep over him. He didn't want to tell Lola yet. She couldn't handle another shock. "I don't want to talk about it right now, Lola."
Lola sighed and closed her eyes. She understood why he wouldn't say, and for now she would let the issue rest. "Where are Jaden and Zoe?"
"With Juanita," Bruce said.
Lola reopened her eyes. "How's she?"
"She's taking it hard."
Lola nodded and closed her eyes once again. She wanted to go back asleep and dream everything was okay again.
