Chapter 18

The Battle

I was worried when the day finally turned into the night and the battle was about to happen. Everyone in Victor's house was extremely quiet. No one really talked to each other while each of us prepared physically and mentally.

Victor could tell I was stressed about the fight and he finally approached with a worrying, yet reassuring smile, "Don't worry, love. Everything's going to be fine. You'll be all right. I promise."

I hugged him and buried my face into his shoulder, "It's not myself that I'm worried about. It's the rest of the pack."

I could feel Victor frown against my hair, "You know I don't understand how you have yet to die from a heart-attack. You worry way too much. If you should be worried about anyone you should worry about yourself and George. The rest of us have been fighting for years, you only just turned last night."

He was right. I had no idea how to fight and we were about to leave. I put on a confident smile, "I'll just have to rely on my new wolf instincts then."

Jacob and Matt appeared in the doorway, "It's time to go you guys."

I sighed heavily as Victor and I followed hand-in-hand behind Matt and Jacob. George was already outside when we finally left. I looked in George's anxious eyes and I got worried. What if he died tonight? It would be all my fault.

Sometimes I wonder what my life would be like if I'd never met Victor. My life would definitely be boring. No deathly fights, no Lycans, and George and I wouldn't be in any danger. Well, I wouldn't mind myself being in danger, it's George that I'm worried about. I don't know what I'd do if I lost him. He was the only family I have left. I shuddered at the thought of his death.

Victor shook me out of my thoughts as we pulled into the State Park. I hadn't even noticed we'd pulled out of the driveway.

"Are you sure you still want to do this. You can stay in the car if you want. We can handle this," Victor said trying to be as convincing as possible.

I wasn't convinced, "If you fight I fight with you guys. I have to."

"You don't have to do anything you don't want to," he sighed.

I just smiled weakly at him and got out of the car. We started walking deeper and deeper into the park, pulling farther and farther away from safety. Soon we came to the middle of a clearing in the woods. Joining us in the clearing was Tomas, Same, and who I guessed to be Julius, Markus, Anita, and Fredrick.

Tomas smiled at us, "So you actually decided to show up. And you brought the humans with you."

Humans? How come he didn't know I was a Lycan? Unless…"Victor!"

"What, Alexa?"

"I don't think Sam is actually a traitor!" He had a quizzical look on his face so I explained, "I think he was being a double-agent. He was there when George and I were turned, he never told them!"

Realization crossed his face, "You're right!" He looked toward Geoffrey and his expression must have told him everything because Geoffrey smiled.

"Hey, Sam! Good work! We really did catch them off guard!"

In a split second Sam was back on our side. He smiled menacingly at Tomas, "You never really thought I'd side with you, did you? I never told you about our deep secrets."

Tomas was silent at first. He then looked at Sam with fire in his eyes, "I'll remember to kill you first, you little shit!"

Soon everyone around me started to change around George and I, except for Tomas. He smiled at me, "Do you feel helpless? I'll snap your frail body in half, meat-girl!"

I matched his grin with my own, "Oh I highly doubt that Tomas. See when Sam said he hadn't told you everything, he meant he didn't tell you that you were equally matched!" I felt my body go through the same change it had when I was first changed. My nose and mouth became elongated and fur began to grow. I laughed in my head at Tomas' worried expression.

As I was about to lunge at Tomas while he was distracted I was thrown across the field as another wolf tackled me from the side. After I'd regained the ability I got back on my feet. The other wolf was a dark gray. It had a more feminine figure like I did so I guessed that it was Anita. We began to do a dance, each of us circling the other so no one could get an advantage.

"Attack her head on, she won't see it coming," I heard Sam's voice say.

This would prove whether Sam was still on our side. I bared my teeth and attacked her straight on. Sam was right. I plowed right into Anita and knocked her out.

"You need to finish her off. I know it's hard but it'll be over before you know it," Sam said in my head.

"What do I do?" I'd never killed someone before.

"Just use your instincts."

I looked at Anita lying on her side. I walked up beside her and just stared for what seemed like forever. Then I knew what to do. I opened my mouth and bit into Anita's throat. Her eyes shot open and she tried to free herself. Her efforts just made it easier because she broke her own neck.

I turned around and started searching for Tomas. Soon a golden wolf appeared from the shadows of the trees. In his wolf-form his eyes were even hungrier.

"So where's the rest of your group?" I asked in a sarcastic tone.

"Dead, like you will be soon." Tomas charged at me and threw me up against a nearby tree. He was faster than I suspected so I had to be even more careful.

"Tomas leave her alone! Fight me!" Victor yelled.

"Victor this is my fight. I started this and I'm going to finish it." I didn't want to make him mad. I just wanted to protect them.

Tomas attacked me and sunk his teeth into my leg. I howled in pain and fell to the ground licking my wound. I got back up and fought through the pain. Tomas was walking away, thinking that I'd given up, so I took my chance. I ran behind him and jumped on his back, biting the scruff of his neck. He yelped and threw me off. I sprung back to my feet. Everything on my body hurt. My leg was gushing blood and I think a few of my ribs were broken.

Soon Greg's face popped into my head. He was smiling at me, "Alexa, you can do this. Do it for yourself, not for me. I died for you, and I'd do it again. Just finish this so I can rest. Love you sis, if you don't mind me calling you that." I was crying on the inside. My anger, pain, and sorrow took over me. I ran at Tomas as fast as I could. He couldn't get away in time and I soon crashed into him. I ripped and clawed at any part of him I could.

Geoffrey had changed back into his human form while I was fighting Tomas and he pulled me off of him. I looked down and saw the bloodied carcass that had once been Tomas.

"You did good, dear. It's time to go home," Geoffrey whispered to me.

I slowly eased myself back to my human form. Victor gasped when he saw me. I realized I must have looked like hell, but it was worth it. I'd heal soon. The fight was over. We were safe. Greg could rest.

Six months later…

Things were a lot easier after the battle with Tomas. No one was trying to kill me, Victor and I could be together peacefully, and George was having fun with his new found powers.

Not having Greg around got a lot easier, too. He was gone, that was one thing that would never change, but he could rest in peace now. His death was avenged and we were all happier and more accepting of that now.

I've also realized that everything happens for a reason. Anything you do shapes something bigger that's going to happen. I don't know what will happen next, but I'll be ready for it. With Victor at my side.
