I walked through a busy city street
with fear two steps ahead of me
to block the view of bright lights
of the building's advertisements.

Yet looking down in grim defeat
shows splattered gum beneath my feet
in sparkling, dried cement to make
the headlines of an old mistake.

But in solitude, I look away
to face the sky's blanket of gray
a new road lined by skyscrapers
no corrupt lights of shivering fakes.

But corruption is a hollow deed
in a street consumed by greed
the sky holds no answers to no fact
besides honest refusal to look back.
