A Little Jade Heart

When you held my hand
And dropped the cool,
Carved stone
Into my palm …
When I looked at it there,
Resting in my hand,
I smiled.

A little jade heart:
Your gift to me.
Ironic, perhaps
To a cynic like me.

For so long
I've been afraid to live,
Afraid to love,
Afraid of this.
For so long
I'd lost my faith in life,
In love,
In this.
For so long
My heart's been jaded.

So I put it on,
When I was all alone.
And I looked in the mirror
To see my little jade heart
Fall just above my breast.

And I felt inside,
My own jaded heart
Begin to crack
And beat
For the first time
In years.

For too long
I've been afraid to live
Afraid to love,
Afraid of this.
For too long
I'd lost my faith in life
In love,
In this.
For too long
My heart's been jaded.

And so I thank you
For the little jade heart:
Your gift to me.
Freedom, perhaps,
For a cynic like me.
