africa
2.19.2007

from my couch
i can see africa

children with
little brown faces
and eyes like
almonds

and bellies
the color of
burnt wood
swollen with
hunger

and sunken cheeks
that tell stories
of longing and
feet that hurt
from walking
on glass

they number in the millions
(and 6 million die every year)
spanning the savannas and cities
where the only growl
they need to fear

is the one in their belly
