My Life Closed Twice Before Its Close
Emily Dickinson

My life closed twice before its close--
It yet remains to see
If Immortality unveil
A third event to me

So huge, so hopeless to conceive
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell.

My Life's A Road That Runs Uphill
Snow and Spindrift

My life's a road that runs uphill
But downhill just the same
And stones along my ragged path
Betray life's twisted, winding game.

The boulders that fall amidst my road
Convince me not to dwell
In the fanciful places like "Heaven on Earth"
For there's a Hell here as well.
