Chapter Nine
The woman wrung her hands and looked up at me. "I hope you are the one that knows the doctor."
I looked back to her, "The doctor?"
"Yes," she said, "Alex always spoke of a doctor who would find treatment for the disease. He always said that all he could do was help us cope with the disease and die peacefully, but that there would come a doctor who would find a way to save us from this disease."
I looked around again, "Is this a civil war?"
"There has been armed conflict for many years but this illness is increasing the poverty and perpetuating the violence." She took my hand and held it in both of hers, "If you have any mercy in your heart, I beg this of you. Please go and find the doctor Alex spoke of and bring him to us. His name is Awariye."
Somehow I wasn't surprised. I looked her in the eyes and promised, "I will." Outside the hospital I took an old bag and pushed some ashes from an old fire into it, mumbling, "Fine, Baba, I get it. I'll do the pre-medical program at Lawrence."
