A Poem for You

How can I fall in love with you?

If I loved you, I'd have to worry about you

When you didn't call, I'd wait by the phone

Biting my nails and glancing at the clock

Or reading a book without seeing the words

Or calling mutual acquaintances anxiously

Only to find out you were out with your friends

If I loved you, I'd have to trust you

When I did something girly and air-headed

You wouldn't laugh at me

Or take me for stupid

Or tell me that you loved me

Only to find out you've been sleeping with my best friend

If I loved you, I'd have to let down my guard

When you're near, I get so happy

I could write a whole poem about you

Or sing an eighties power ballad

Or tell you my truths

Only to find out you never cared about me at all

How can I fall in love with you?

Loving you would destroy me

ETA: This isn't showing the breaks in the poem. If someone could tell me how to do that, that would be great. Otherwise, the breaks are after the first line, before the second "if," before the third "if," and before "how."
