"Where are you going?" Justin said as J made to leave the room.
"Going to drop off my bag then… that's my business, why? You want a play by play of my life?" J said sarcastically.
"You haven't told me a way you will gather information yet, have a seat."
"You're doing it again." J said huffily before dropping her bag and dragging a seat right up to her teacher's desk.
"Well have you thought of anything?" Justin said dropping the phoney professional voice and getting back on subject.
"Yeah I'm gonna stalk them." J said rolling her eyes.
"Very well you may leave." Justin said very professionally.
"You're doing it again, and that's it? That's all I have to do?" J said suspiciously.
"For the time being, yes that is all."
"You know I could choose to study you and just report everything you say in class."
"It is a possibility and would make the assignment rather easy as I am at your disposal." Justin said leaning back in his chair, his phoney voice firmly in place.
J eyed Justin across the desk, he was as laid back as always but he still couldn't drop the whole teacher voice when he was talking to someone one on one. She really thought about doing the assignment on him, but like he said, that was too easy, and she liked a challenge. She thought of doing Lucie, her roommate, easy enough to gather info on her, but again too easy. She looked over at Justin again, he was looking at her as she was thinking things out in her mind. Somehow it unnerved her and she shifted uncomfortably. Justin noticed and immediately looked away blushing. J grinned when he had done that it reminded her of middle school, where no one thought she was a druggie, where all the boys had asked for her number and shyly looked away when she looked at them and gave them a smile. Back home was nothing like California and stuck with all the rich kids. Well the kids back home did do something bad, they pitied her, and that was worse than teasing.
"Why do they call you Tracks?" Justin asked, looking into her eyes again. Immediately he saw a change in her, her eyes had turned a cloudy grey and her normally expressionless face had turned into a deep frown. "I'm sorry, I did not mean to pry, I am your teacher and shouldn't be asking you such things."
"No no, it's alright, better than more rumors spreading around." She smiled weakly at Justin and his stomach did front flips. "Before I moved here I was in the hospital a lot, so many needles went into the same arm that I became numb anything they did in that arm, so they asked my parents and me if it was ok for med students to practice when I needed a change in fluids. I agreed, and some messed up leaving track marks. So I guess the needle part is true, just not what they were for."
"Why were you in the hospital so many time?" Justin asked, his voice calm yet concerned, not pitying.
"I used to be allergic to a lot of things as a kid, to prevent me from dying they basically had to test everything. And shoot me up with just about everything, they were surprised my body never rejected the drugs." J looked up, Justin was still listening, waiting for J to continue. "Peanuts, plastic, wheat, milk, rubber, my own pacifier" Those produced the worst reactions. Most have toned down where I can eat small amounts of them, and plastic and rubber… unless I'm in a bubble of it then I'm fine, wetsuits I can wear, found that out when I came here." J shrugged, "You learn to live with it."
"I would imagine you have to learn." Justin said simply.
"Yeah well, don't pity me, I got enough of that from classmates once they found out, that's why I came here.' J said her eyes flashing.
Justin reached across his desk and took hold of J's hand and patted it softly, "I will never pity you." Justin said staring into her eyes, to show her how serious he was. The sat there for what felt like forever, her hand held by his, their eyes staring unwaveringly into each others, neither wanting to pull away or ruin the moment that it had really been. Neither had to, there was a loud booming sound as the door was flung open and both of them sprang apart.
Lucie stood in the doorway breathing hard. Justin stood up quickly and grabbed the water bottle from his desk. Holding it out to Lucie he rubbed her back to slow her breathing.
"What is it Lucie?" Justin said concerned.
"Ms… Gib… Ms. Gibbons… st… stairs… fell… help" Lucie said breathing heavily in between gulps of water.
"Ms. Gibbons fell down the stairs?" Justin said worriedly before running out of the classroom.
Lucie glanced over at the silent J who was fidgeting slightly wringing her hands nervously and turning a deep crimson. J wouldn't meet Lucie's gaze and didn't see when Lucie's eyes had narrowed to slits, before she ran after Justin.
J continued to fidget silently, debating whether or not to run after Justin and Lucie. Moments later though Edward entered the classroom out of breath.
"Has Lucie been here?" Edward asked. He was one of the few that didn't treat her like dirt or ignore her completely.
"Yeah she just left," J said quietly, "along with Justin" she added as an afterthought.
Edwards eyes flashed momentarily, "Thanks" He said before sprinting back down the hall. J smiled softly, Edward would be her subject, she would find out exactly why his eyes had flashed so angrily just then.
