Staring out of her window Kya was surprised to see that Tad was home at ten on a Friday night. Being one of the star football players, Friday night was designated party night when all the sport teams would meet up at some poor unsuspecting parent's house and proceed to get wasted beyond reason.
It was also at many of these parties where the latest hook ups and gossip happened, meaning that this was "The" place to be. Tad would usually arrive late to these parties and leave early in the morning before rolling into bed. Kya only knew this because he would usually try and get her opinion on his outfit before he went and would wake her up when he came back by his drunken antics. Usually he would invite her to come with him and "save him from the boredom of blonde bimbos" as he loved to put it, but she knew it was all just a polite gesture on his part and he really loved all the attention his athletic build and chiselled good looks got him. But still she'd always say no before slamming the window in his face and that was just during the times she actually spoke to him.
Kya and Tad had been friends since they were munchkins, both rolling around in the snow during winter and playing on the nearby park when it was summer. During the first thirteen years of their lives there would barely be a minute when you would find the two separated. It was always "Tad and Kya" never one without the other. That was until, as cliched as it sounds, high school happened. During year seven and year eight everything went on as usual between the two of them, but during year nine things began to change. Tad discovered the joys of being a sport hero whereas Kya found the joys of knowledge appealed to her. Whilst he went off with his friends she went off with hers and a gigantic gap managed to get between their friendship as they started to lead different lives. But still they remained as close as they could to one another, sharing the inner most details of their lives even if their friends didn't get along. Then on one fateful day it happened.
Kya had met Tad at his locker as they usually did at the end of the day, when he didn't have an after school activity and neither did she. She'd waited there for twenty minutes before he finally turned up panting with his shorts on inside out and his tie hung loosely around his neck. Kya took one look at him and knew what had kept her waiting. Two words. Kitty Bang. Otherwise known as Kitty 'Bangsalot' to the student population, Tad's new girlfriend. The very same girl came tottering down the corridor a few seconds after Tad, as he was still trying to get his breath back.
"Baby, you can't just leave a girl after doing that," Kitty whined in her high pitched grating voice. Kya resisted the urge to roll her eyes and instead glared at Tad. ' You left me waiting here for this' she tried to silently scream at him, but he seemed oblivious to it and instead swung his arm around Kitty's shoulders and smirked down at Kya.
"Still waiting for me?" he said smiling. Kya didn't even get a chance to reply before Kitty put her own two-penny worth in.
"Baby, why do hang with her? It's really bringing down your reputation around school, and if its bringing down yours then it'll end up bringing down mine too! You're going have to get rid of her babe," Kitty said, talking as if Kya wasn't stood right next to her mouth hanging open slightly in shock, yet still Kitty continued onwards in her rant.
" Come on babe you're going to have to choose between being friends with her and being with our lot and me," as she was holding his hand on the word 'me' she placed his hand upon her vast chest as if insinuating exactly what he would be loosing if he chose Kya. Kya looked up at him expectantly and was hurt beyond belief to see that he was actually deliberating his decision. It looked as if fifteen years of friendship was less important than a few quick shags at parties and apparently after school. Fighting back the tears Kya waited as a minute ticked by and Tad still hadn't said anything, growling slightly she said,
"Firstly, I have a name Kitty ok and it's Kya so stop calling me "her" like I'm something less than you and secondly Tad you jackass I'm taking the decision away from you, you can choose her I don't want you and I don't need you." And with that she walked away, managing to keep the tears back until she arrived home where she let the full extent of her humiliation wash over her.
A noise in Tad's home brought her back to reality, she was sat at her desk reading over her notes for statistics and she had a perfect view into Tad's bedroom. Looking in she saw that not only was Tad home but he also didn't seem to be alone. Walking out of his en suite bathroom was none other than the slag Kitty Bang. Looking closely Kya was surprised to find that she seemed to be dressed in some very revealing lingerie. Then Tad came into view and Kya felt her heart speed up as he was only dressed in his boxers with a very noticeable bulge in his department. She watched as he made his way over to Kitty before kissing her long and hard. Kya wished that someone would want to be that intimate with her. She hadn't even had a kiss yet and she just really wanted to have someone be affectionate with her. Realising she was peeping Kya looked away just as Tad's hand began wandering underneath Kitty's top. Kya quickly went over to shut her curtains but not before her eye caught Tad's and they gazed at each other for a heartbeat before she hurled the curtains across the bar.
Staring disdainfully into the mirror Cara wondered why so many people at college had decided to hate her. She lifter her top up and gazed at her relatively flat belly. She then looked critically at her face, looking carefully at her green eyes and honey coloured hair. There must be something physically repulsive about her to have so many people think she was a freak of the highest order. Yet still Kya could find nothing extremely out of the ordinary about herself that would cause such a violent reaction from her peers.
"Some people are just made to be disliked," she mused to herself. She jumped a foot in the air when the sound of something hitting her window intruded on her thoughts. Glaring at the curtains she went over to them and whipped them open. Looking around for the perpetrator her eyes locked onto the lonely figure stood directly opposite her, leaning out of his own window. Her eyes automatically softened when she took in the sight of her former best friend, before they hardened again when her mind played over the 'former' bit.
"hey," he sighed, looking at her in a forlorn sort of way.
" Yes," she snapped, " What can I help you with?" Even when she didn't exactly mean to sound harsh just being around him made her words take on a mind of their own. It had been two years since the incident and she was now attending the local college, but still she couldn't let go of the past.
"Please Kya, don't be like that," he whispered, " I really need you right now." If he had said that to any other girl at their college they would most definitely have wet their pants, but with her she just felt so unaffected by it. It was probably because of the tone of his voice. It held such a note of sadness that she paused for a minute before agreeing and climbing across the short gap between their houses. She reached the other house and stepped gracefully into Tad's bedroom staring around the space she hadn't been in, in two years. Same as ever, messy and boyish. She smiled slightly to herself before turning back towards Tad who, after seeing he had her attention pulled her into a hug. She froze and tried to look up at him but was unable to what with his face being in the crook of her neck and all.
"Tad?" she said, a silent question behind the one word. Still not letting go Tad sighed before talking,
" I know this is awkward for you, and I know we haven't talked in years but I really need you right now," his voice cracked a bit as he spoke which cause Kya to instinctively pull him tighter against her. Tad seemed to appreciate this as he started to sob quietly. Bewildered, Kya started to rub his back gently and make soft noises as she tried to calm him down. After a few minutes Tad pulled away before sitting down on his bad and dragging her to sit next to him. Even though the wasn't hugging her anymore, he still refused to relinquish all physical contact so he grabbed hold of her hand and entwined their fingers.
"Tad," Kya said warningly, " I know you need support right now but I don't know you that well anymore maybe you should ring up one of your friends, or even Kitty" she suggested trying to loosen his grip on her hand, but he refused to budge.
"They wouldn't understand what I'm going through, only you will understand," he said quietly.
"What is it? What's happened?" she asked trying her best to be sympathetic to the person who humiliated her.
"It's Gary," was all Tad said, and Kya finally understood the route in which his troubles had taken him. Gary was Tad's older brother. Usually older brothers were meant to be looked up to, idolised even. But not Gary. At the age of fourteen Gary had been kicked out of school for selling drugs to the younger children. At the age of sixteen Gary was sent to a juvenile detention centre for 3 years because he robbed a alcohol store. He had only recently gotten out of the prison and so Kya deducted that something very bad must have happened to him.
"Oh," she said rubbing her thumb against the palm of his hand, "tell me,"
" Apparently he was driving around Lake Estate early this morning, high as a kite, and he started hallucinating. He says that a giant purple toad was sat in the middle of road and so he veered off to the left and ended up crashing into a brick wall at quite a high speed. He was conscious when they got him to the hospital but they say that he's down something to his brain and he's gone into a coma. They…. They say he may…may never…. Come out of…. It," he finished off his voice cracking once again.
" Oh God Tad I'm so sorry," Kya sighed as she wrapped her arms around him, hugging him close to her chest. " Why aren't you at the hospital with him?
" My parents won't let me go, they're both spending the next few days there in one of the hospital rooms and there isn't enough room for me. I was able to visit him for a couple of hours but then they made me leave. I just feel like a part of me has been ripped away and nothing can fill that void," he said.
" Tad I don't think you should be alone right now! You should definitely call one of your friends up and tell them to come over for a few days and then have them stay here with you." She said as she saw the time on the wall was getting closer to 12am.
" I've tried not to be alone, Kitty came over before," he said blushing slightly, " But that was me just trying to take my mind off things," he hastily said.
"Hey don't need to defend yourself against me mate! I don't care what you do!" she said gently disentangling herself from him.
"Wait," Tad tried to stop, she turned around to look at him patiently, "Please stay, just stay with me while I fall asleep, I really don't want to be alone and it's too late on a Friday for any of my friends to be sober enough to care." He looked down miserably. Kya didn't say anything as she made her way back over to him and crawled under the bed covers. He got in beside her curled around her in an intimate way. A small smile graced her lips as she thought about the affection she was finally receiving.
"I'll stay for tonight but I won't be here when you wake up," she said as she settled herself into a comfortable position on his queen-size bed. Their legs were entangled and his arms were wrapped protectively round her. Any onlooker would have seen a couple snuggling in bed, whereas they saw two friends giving support
"What? Why?" he asked, his head jerking up at her words.
" I've got to catch a train to my cousins at like eight, but I don't want to go anymore, I feel awful leaving you here like this." She insisted leaning her head on his chest.
" Oh," he said disappointed by the fact that they were finally getting somewhere with mending their friendship and she had to leave. "Don't worry about it," he said as he wrapped his arms more tightly around her and started to drift off to sleep.
" Tad" Kya whispered. He grunted slightly in response, " I do still love you, even after you humiliated me."
Tad looked down in surprise as her words registered in his brain. She meant it as a friends love and he found himself surprised that he was disappointed that she only loved him like that. Gazing down at her he took in the appearance of her full lips and large green eyes illuminated in the moons light. Going with the sudden urge he had he leaned his head down before kissing her softly on the lips. His lips moved over hers soundlessly and after a minute hers started reacting too. His tongue started to press against her lips, begging entry and she granted it to him by parting them slightly. Their tongues battled, hers cautiously and inexperienced whilst his was demanding and hard. The kiss intensified as their breathing increased. His hand moved to the bottom of her shirt and he started drawing small patters with his fingertips on her skin. The kiss stopped after a few minutes leaving both participants breathless.
" I still love you, too" he whispered back to her. Kya didn't know how to react, she knew that the only reason he had kissed her was because he had wanted some form of comfort and yet she found herself wanting to beg for more from him. She had experienced her first real kiss and it had been from someone who was desperately seeking comfort rather than from someone who actually wanted her as a person. Feeling disgusted with herself she gradually fell asleep, distracting her thoughts with the realisation that the next day she would be on her way to Cornwall where a new Kya lay waiting for her to find.
Honestly tell me what you think! Constructive criticism very much welcome!!!!!!!
