Nuclear Poem- Chernobyl
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station disaster
Happened on April 26, 1986, at 1:00 A.M.
In the USSR (now Ukraine).
The cause: routine safety test gone horribly wrong and human error.
Nuclear reactor exploded, sending a cloud of radioactive smoke up in the air.
Cloud spread from Kiev, Ukraine, less than 100 miles from Chernobyl
To 1,600 miles away.
In the closest village, 40,000 people were evacuated, never to see their homes again.
It could take up to 200 years for the repercussions of the accident to be totally gone.
There were four reactors at Chernobyl. One exploded, the other three are still working.
38 miles of land around the Chernobyl Power Station are still radioactive today.
200 people were killed, but up to 200,000 more are still at risk from the radiation released.
