In the Blink of an Eye

Preface

"Sarah …… Miss Sarah it is time to get up you don't want to be late for school."

A maid pulled back huge thick drapes and a ray of sunlight came streaming into a vast room landing on a girl who instantly flinched as if the sunlight had stung her. Sarah Emmet sat bolt upright in her bed.

"Awe Lindsey I thought you weren't going to do that to me any more." Sarah said as she hurriedly got out of bed and stood in the shadows of the room.

"Oh I am sorry Miss I forgot."

"It's alright I just don't like being startled awake with the sun like that. Can you pull the sheer over the window?"

Lindsey nodded and pulled the sheer cover over the window filtering the sun.

"Thank you. Oh what time is it?"

"Nearly seven"

Sarah gave a little squeak and ran over to two large doors she threw them open and ran in to her closet. She hurriedly changed into her school uniform and then walked back in to her room. She sat down in front of her huge vanity. Sarah had long wavy dark brown hair and piercing green eyes. Most of the time her skin was olive colored but as she sat looking at herself in the mirror she thought that she looked quite pale. Lindsey came back in pushing a cart with a silver tray on it/ Sarah groaned she was not hungry but she got up and took a few bits of toast and gulped down her tomato juice she shuddered it was ice cold.

"Are my parents still here?"

"No they left early this morning, your father said that they would not be home till late tonight."

Sarah instinctively looked to Lindsey's pocket. Lindsey jumped a she suddenly figured out where Sarah was looking

"Awe Miss Sarah you know your father all too well." She took a small white envelope out of her pocket and handed it to Sarah.

"Thank you" Sarah glanced at her clock it was almost seven forty five.

"Oh shoot I will have to read this in the car can't be late on the last day." She said with a smile

"Edward has already got the car waiting out front."

Sarah snatched up her book bag took a quick glance in the mirror and rushed off down the stairs. Sure enough Sarah's driver had the car waiting for her with the door open. She jumped in and closed the door behind her.

"Good morning miss, Excited about the last of school?" Edward asked in his Scottish/English accent

" I am ecstatic I cant wait for summer, Mom , Dad and I are finally taking that trip to America then I will have four whole weeks to do whatever I want "

Edward chuckled a low little chuckle and then kept focused on the road. Sarah really was excited to be going on the trip to America with her parents. Even though she was born in Los Angeles Sarah had no memories of ever living anywhere but Scotland. Sarah's mom was some sort of an heiress and her dad had inherited a lot of money from his parents and now ran his own business. Both of her parents had inherited most of their money but both still worked. Her parents had met when they were attending Ellingworth Academy the same school that Sarah attends. Ellingworth was the private academy that most wealthy families sent their children to and the Emmets were no exception. Sarah had been attending Ellingworth since pre-school; she loved the school while she was excited about having free time over summer the fact that she only had one more year at Ellingworth scared her.

It was a two hour ride to school Sarah sat looking out the window the clouds were now covering the sun so that only a few beams of light were breaking through. That was the way she like it. Sarah was not the only one in her family that preferred that the sun be covered she had always notice that whenever possible her mother would find an excuse to stay indoors on sunny days, she had said that it was because she sun burned easily which was perfectly reasonable since that last time her mother had ventured out in to the sun she had ended up with second and third degree burns where the sun had touched her skin.

Suddenly Sarah remembered that she still had the letter from her father in her hand. She ripped open the crisp white envelope and pulled her fathers note. She saw his familiar flowing scrawl and read:

Sarah,

Your Mother and I are so sorry that we had to leave before you woke

This morning. I am sure that by now you have already talked to Lindsey . We

Wont be home till late tonight possibly early tomorrow morning we have some

Important business to attend to. Have a wonderful last day of school and

Remember no matter what your mother and I love you very much and we only

Want to give you the best and keep you safe you are our precious daughter

And you mean the world to us. Be safe my dear and we will see you soon

Love always,

Your Mother and Father

Sarah sat looking at the note it seemed rather strange to her usually her dads notes just told her that plan for the day when they would be home and to have a god day at school. But she just figured that they were feeling as emotional as she was with the reality of her being a senior setting in on everyone.

Just then the car came to a stop; Edward got out and opened the door for Sarah.

"Here we are miss and with an hour till first bell." Edward gave her a wink

"Thank you Edward, I hope have a good day."

"You to miss and I will be here after school to pick you up." Sarah smiled and walked through the large oak doors and into school right away she was surrounded by her friends. They all walked to their lockers and put their stuff away. After everyone had put their stuff away the whole group walked into the courtyard. Sarah sat down on a bench and listened to her friends' mindless chatter her best friend Amoree sat down next to her. Sarah had always been a little jealous of Amoree she was the kind of girl that all the boys flocked to she had a beautiful face that never seemed to have a blemish on it, long beautiful blond hair she was tall and skinny and always seemed to dance everywhere more than walk ( probably form all her years of ballet). Of course whenever Sarah said anything about this to Amoree she was always quick to point out that while the boys first caught sight of her they followed Sarah everywhere.

"Hey look who is coming this way." Amoree said nudging Sarah in the side. She looked up from the spot on the ground that she had been intently staring at. To her non surprise Shawn McCalister was walking toward her. He was one of the best looking guys in school the son of Lord and Lady McCalister and the little brother of Sarah's best friend Mark who had graduated last year. For the life of her she couldn't figure out why Shawn had become so attached to her when Amoree was always right there next to her.

"Hello Sarah." He said in his refined English accent. He sat down next to her Amoree had gotten up and was now talking with a few of her friends. Sarah shot a nasty glare at the back of her head.

"Hi Shawn how are you?"

"I am good …. So I heard that you and your parents are going to the states over the summer that should be fun."

"Yeah I can't wait. What are you doing this summer?" She didn't really care but was trying to be polite

" Oh we are going to Paris I am not really that excited I wanted to go to New Zealand but my mother decided on Paris."

"I see well maybe we could hang out over break." As soon as the words left her mouth she regretted them

"Yeah that would be great"

" Well give me a call then, but I better get going I don't want to be late for class" she stood up and began walking to her first hour class even though it didn't start for another half hour. Shawn called after her.

"I will see you later."

Amoree caught up with her and had a big smile on her face

" Soooo how did it go?"

" Amoree I really wish you wouldn't encourage him. I don't want to be any more than friends with him. "

"Come on Sarah Shawn is a great guy and he is totally in to you why don't you want to go out with him?

"Look I just don't I am so tired of everyone trying to fix me up with guys it is really starting to get on my nerves." They stopped walking Amoree looked at Sarah

"Are you feeling alright?"

"I feel fine why?"

"I don't know you are really pale and you always get really snappy when you, look like this, But I am sorry you are right we shouldn't push you into dating any one you don't want to. I would be mad if people were trying to get me to do something I didn't want to."

Sarah caught a look at herself in the mirror in the hall she was suspired she looked worse than she did when she left for school

"Sarah are you alright?"

"Oh yeah I am fine sorry I just space out for a second there lets get to class."

That day at school was pretty uneventful everyone was talking about their summer plans and singing yearbooks the seniors cried and so did some of the juniors. Sarah was glad to be in the secluded safety of the car and on her way home.

"Miss Sarah Lindsey wanted me to tell you that your mothers called things are taking a bit longer to take care of than they had anticipated so they are not going to be home until Monday."

' That is fine I can always find something to do. Did they saw where they were?"

" No just that they were taking care of some important business."

" I see , well I guess they have to take care of all of the business before we go on vacation."

" Yes I suppose that is true. Miss Sarah are you feeling well?"

" I am fine Edward just a bit tired I think I am going to lay down when I get home it has been a long day." The truth was that Sarah wasn't feeling well she felt weak and was lightheaded but she didn't want to let anyone on to that.

" I think that a rest would be a good idea miss."

For the rest of the ride they both were quiet when they got home Sarah went up to her room. When she opened the door she jumped back the maids had opened her windows and the sun had broken through the clouds. She ran in and pulled the curtains closed her room was dark again so she lit a few candles she always preferred candle light to turning on the lights. She changed out of her uniform and in to a pair of sweat pants and a tank top then got in to her bed and laid down. Her whole body ached as she laid there until she eventually fell asleep.
