A Word

And then someone says
one seemingly insignificant word.
A memory of you bodyslams into me,
almost knocking me over.

But I continue on with my
meaningless conversation
functioning even though
pictures of you swirling inside
leave me breathless.

Moments and conversations
flowing through my consciousness,
then that horrific visual of you
hanging from the ceiling.

The final heartbreaking image of
your makeup caked face
and your suit pushed up
high enough to hide the bruises.

I force back the tears
because the rest of the room
is oblivious to the pain
this word ignited in me.
