Independence Day:

It's the night before the

Fourth of July,

The United States of America's

Independence day

I don't find myself

Thinking about my country

And the sad, shoddy shape

That it is in

I don't find myself

Pondering the next election

And the politicians that keep

Lying to us

I don't find myself

Worrying about men long

Dead and in their graves

And what they'd think

I find my mind

On a fresher grave

One that means more

To me than our first

President, that

Has set more of example

Than any politician –

Living or dead

But as his body decays in the cool, dark ground,

I find myself celebrating his liberation

Of his life and his death

And the things that I've learned

From the pair of them
