Exercise #8 in the Tabatha Yeatts Summer Writing Contest (dialogue). Inspired to coming out, however you chose for it to happen.

Come Out Swinging (Closet Bomb)

the words drop
like atomic bombs:

I'm gay

and little mushroom clouds
billow out above
stunned heads.

what?

doesn't need an answer
(rhetorical shock,
without the awe).

silence;
recuperate;
toughen up for the
return
(crumble when it comes).

hand over eyes,
head bent low,
wounds untreated
and freely bleeding.
how long have you...?
barely whispered.

head shakes,
stills.
shock turns to
white-hot anger,
yelling
get out!
get out of my house,
filth.

white-hot tears
and head hung low,
face the door.
one look back –
can't stand any more.

survived the initial hit,
but radiation poisoning
got them in the end.
