Shadows cloaked the room, seeping from the corners and cradling the small square of light on the floor. The sunlight streamed through that lonely window and caught the dust motes hanging in the still air.
He sat in his chair, elbows on his knees, fingers laced. Beyond the square of light on the floor, he could see her feet, poised by the door.
Neither of them moved, both staring blindly at the light.
"Just say it," he said, his whisper harsh in the silence.
A breeze rustled the curtains.
She drew a slow breath and let it out softly.
The word even softer.
He bowed his head as he heard the door close, the softest sound yet, and he sat in his chair in the shadows.
The shaft of hazy sunlight ignited the dust motes as they danced and laughed in the empty air.
