By kat– Bite Me – Chapter 11: Fangs
"If you're really a vampire, where are your fangs?" I asked as I stared stupidly at his teeth. They were very shiny teeth, the kind you see in toothpaste commercials. I don't know why I was so surprised though. So far the only thing about Aaron that wasn't completely perfect was the fact that he thought he was a vampire.
He answered slowly, obviously not wanting to scare me "They come out… When I eat" He remained completely still. His voice didn't give away any stress, although I read it in his eyes. His eyes were fixed on me, on my face and on my lips. I pulled my eyebrows together and crinkled my lips as I looked down on the floor.
After a moment I heaved out a breath and looked back up into his eyes. "Show Me," I said anxiously, although I tried to hide it. "I need to see them" At the corner of my mind I imagined the 'vampire Aaron'. Vampire Aaron was different; I had gotten a glimpse of him when the tracker had taken me, but somehow he wasn't that bone chilling kind of scary, he kind of made me feel safe.
"Kayden," He started as he wrapped his arms around my waist "I don't want to scare you off" He half-heartedly smiled as he pressed his lips to my forehead.
"I want to see them," I paused "I want to see all of you, even the vampire you. I need to know. I mean, how can you expect me to believe in something totally fiction when you have given me absolutely no proof whatsoev-" While I was talking Aaron had dropped his arms from my waist and took a step back. He seemed to be struggling with himself, struggling with the decision he had to make and what I was asking of him.
He pulled me over to the bed and we both sat down. He closed his eyes for a moment. I couldn't help but stare. His skin was so flawless, his features so perfect, his smile so heartbreakingly gorgeous.
He opened his eyes and looked into mine "Are you sure" He questioned as his hand moved to touch my cheek. "Are you sure you're ready to see this?" His eyes were burning with sadness and sorrow while the rest of his features remained impassive.
I pushed back the urge to gulp when a three-letter word left my lips. "Yes" Yes, I was ready. I needed to see this for myself. I couldn't imagine Aaron being something scary, something that could harm me.
He forced a smile and barred his teeth. They still looked normal…
That's when I saw them. His two canine front teeth had somehow become sharp deadly fangs. I unconsciously shifted my body away from him; taking two steps back. I stared at his fangs as my heart beat faster. His fangs were kind of like the ones you see in movies… except Aaron's were real. They were just as white as his teeth, but their sharpness drew them to attention. My human instincts told me to run, my brain was screaming at me to do something, run, hide, fight, anything but this. However, my heart kept me where I was.
After a few minutes of re-evaluating the situation, I pulled my eyes away from his teeth and looked up into his eyes. They were filled with an unbearable pain. I didn't like seeing him so sad. Suddenly realized what had caused his sadness. He thought I didn't want him anymore, he thought that I was scared of him. I mean, I did move away when he showed me his fangs and I did look pretty damn horrified… But I wasn't scared of him.
The truth was, it didn't matter if he was a vampire or not. He was still Aaron, right? I was in too deep to turn back now. I couldn't leave him. He was already a part of me.
"Aaron?" I said cautiously "I'm… not afraid"
"Really," He seemed skeptical "could have fooled me." He sighed as he retracted his fangs.
I pursed my lips and lowered my eyes "I'm sorry" I whispered, keeping my breathing even
"I didn't choose to be like this" He looked out my bedroom window, reminiscing about his past. I opened my mouth, but realized if he wanted to tell me he would. "Thank you for reacting so calmly" He sighed after a moment "You must be curious at least?" He questioned as a soft smile appeared on his face
I nodded slightly "Do you have powers, or is it just the fangs and the sunlight?"
He raised an eyebrow as he turned back to look at me. His lips pulled up in that familiar smirk. "You watch too many movies" He shook his head and rolled his eyes.
"Do enlighten me then" I battered my eyelashes mockingly and gave a sweet smile. He smirked, placed his hand on the back of my neck and pulled me into a kiss. His kiss was urgent, yet so much freer than our previous kisses. I smiled with my lips against his and kissed him back with just as much enthusiasm. He chuckled and then pulled back.
"We can hear better, see better, think better-"
"Think better?" I interrupted him.
"Yes, we think faster, which also lets us have faster reflexes" He explained as he looked down at my lips. He still looked unsure, he was probably waiting for me to run out the door or jump out the window.
"Cool, but before. When you saved me from the tracker, I could swear we were-"
"Flying?" He finished.
"Yeah"
"We can levitate, or fly if you prefer, but we don't 'fly' often" He pursed his lips as he looked towards the door.
"How come?"
"Well, remaining inconspicuous is kind of hard when we're flying in the sky." He smiled
"I see what you mean. I still can't believe all this is real" I sighed. "Are you sure I'm not dreaming?" He smiled
"Do you wish you were dreaming?"
"I'm not sure," I answered honestly. I was so overloaded with knowledge that I don't think any of it sunk in. You know how sometimes when something big happens but you're so numb that it doesn't really sink in until later? Well yeah, that was me at the moment. Numbly accepting everything. I never was good when it came to dealing with things…"How bout the sun?"
"That's myth, we can go out into the sunlight, we just prefer not to" He explained
"Why?"
"It hurts our eyes" I stared at him stupidly, waiting for him to explain. He smiled softly and got the hint "I told you we have very good vision, the sun interferes with our vision. It's merely uncomfortable since it's so bright, but we can go outside"
"Wow, and I though I was well equipped. You seem to be pretty invincible…" I muttered
He took a step closer "It gets better,"
I raised my eyebrows skeptically "It gets better than having super senses and being able to fly?"
"Well, our minds are also somewhat more developed."
"Meaning…" He didn't answer with words, instead he showed me. The white pillow that was lying on the bed suddenly rose up from the sheets. It made its way over to where we were sitting and floated down into my lap. My eyes were wide with amazement.
"No. Way" I couldn't seem to catch my breath. Breathing seemed too insignificant compared to all the things I had learnt in the last half an hour. First I had to wrap my mind around the fact that vampires were real. Second, I had to believe that they had all these 'powers'?
Aaron suddenly looked impassive again "Cole can track people, Elena can control nature, Cameron can see the future, and Landon, well him and Damien were the only two vampires that I know who don't have something extra."
"Oh" From the way he looked at me I could tell what he was thinking. I crossed my arms over my chest defensively and said "I'm not crazy, so what if I'm not all weirded out and girly on the outside"
"I never said you were crazy," He said calmly in a very, very seductive voice, which made me shiver.
"You implied it, don't think I didn't see how you were looking at me"
He laughed, "I don't think you're crazy-"
"But-" I tried to interrupt but he held up his hand and cut me off
"I'm fascinated that you're so composed and calm," He said slowly as his eyes analyzed every bit of me. Way to make a girl feel self-conscious.
"Would you rather I ran out the door screaming?" I challenged as a slick smile took over my face
He rolled his eyes "I was expecting that, but this… This is more interesting," He matched my smile "How can you be so calm? Normal girls would be freaking out right now." His eyes looked analytical as he stared at me
"I don't know. Maybe deep down I knew all of this but I was just in denial? I just feel so numb right now that I'm not sure how else to react" I explained, hoping that made sense
"I don't want to push my luck, but would you like to try something new?" his voice was filled with mystery with an underlying tease.
"Like what?" I squinted my eyes, suspiciously. Somehow, in the back of my mind I was hoping it had something to do with us making out.
"Flying" he answered as that familiar smirk appeared on his face. I couldn't help but nod like an idiot while I stared at him in awe. He laughed at my expression and stood up from the bed. He held out his hand, waiting for me to take it. I shook my head out of my daydream and put my hand in his. He brought me over to the window with the long snow-white curtains. He pushed the curtains aside and opened the glass window doors. It took a moment for it to make sense of his actions. I looked at him and I looked down from the window.
"No way" I shook my head as I backed away from the window, holding my hands up, palms forward. "We are not going to jump out of the window" I said anxiously. I mean it was like two storeys up! Sure I had climbed out of the window before, but that was for a different cause. That was to escape. What he was asking me to do was jump out of the window. What cause was that for?
"Don't you trust me?" His voice sounded like velvet as he teased me. His face looked so angelic, yet kind of devilish at the same time.
I whimpered and looked around the room "Of course I do" I muttered "but don't you think the room is much more comfy?" I asked innocently "it's got a nice big bed and a pretty bathroom…"
His smirk radiated his face "Are you suggesting we use the bed?" He took a step towards me, his eyes on full seductive mode.
My knees went weak as my breath caught in my throat "Maybe" I mouthed as his hand brushed my cheek. He pulled my body to his and pressed his lips down onto mine. His hands got tangled in my hair as mine did in his. When we came up for air I looked towards the window and then back at him. "We could use the bed" I smiled seductively
He laughed, "I would love to, but when we do use the bed, we'll be using it because it's time, not because you need an excuse. Don't you trust me Kayden?" he asked teasingly
"Of course" I mumbled, "I'm just scared"
"And do you think that I would ever purposely put you in danger?" he challenged
"No" I whispered as I looked up into his beautiful violet eyes. "I want to, but I'm scared. I know I'll regret it if I say no, but it's so hard to say yes"
"Take my hand babe," he whispered in my ear as he interlocked my hand in his.
"I'm not sure," I said anxiously as I turned to wrap my arms around him. He sighed and picked me up in his arms and carried me, bridal style. It did make me feel a little better, being closer to him. I'm sure he could tell from the way I held back a small smile. If I had a choice on how I would die, it would be right here in his arms. I looked at his flawless face and nodded as took in a deep breath.
"Trust me." He smiled and whispered in my ear. Then he took that final step off the windowsill, out into the sky.
