The afternoon sun shined through the windows of a white house with a jungle gym in the backyard. A blond woman was in front of the porch, working in the flower garden she was planting. She wore a white apron that was covered with dirt as were her jeans and baggy purple shirt. She wiped a bead of sweat off of her beautiful face, green eyes determined to make this garden bloom beautifully. It was almost summer and the flowers were already starting to grow. She was excited with her work but would not stop until she was satisfied.
In the house, a very tall, very handsome man sat at kitchen table, scribbling in a notebook. His short blond hair was a spiky in the front and his blue eyes were concentrated on his work. Two children sat on the floor, playing with toy cars. The girl, eight years old, made race car noises as she whipped a car across the floor to her six year old brother. Her dirty blond hair was in pigtails, brushing her shoulders. She had her father's eyes. The boy had his mother's eyes with bleach blond hair. His chubby cheeks were what people would call adorable and he grinned at his sister.
"Vroom!" he said, pushing a police car to his sister.
"Beep, beep!" she responded as if they were actually talking car. A real horn honked outside and the kids looked at each other. "Who do you think is here, Kyle?"
"I don't know, Rebbecca," the little boy, Kyle, answered his sister. They listened and heard a very familiar voice talking to their mother. The two siblings grinned and jumped up.
"Auntie Audrey is here!" they both shouted happily then ran for the door. The man at the table, James, watched his kids run for the door and thought that things could not have been anymore stressful. Or at least that is what he thought until Audrey arrived. Sighing, he closed his notebook and got up, walking outside to see Kyle and Rebbecca leaping off the porch. His wife, Carol, was hugging a beautiful woman with long brown hair that was pulled back in a ponytail. Her big brown eyes filled with love as the two children ran to her.
"Auntie Audrey!" they shouted, throwing their arms around her legs.
"Ah!" she shouted, keeping her balance. "You two are getting strong!" The kids shouted excitedly when she started tickling them. The giggled loudly, falling on their backs as she continued her ministrations.
"Stop!" Rebbecca laughed, trying to wiggle away.
"Uncle, uncle!" Kyle shrieked.
"Uncle?" Audrey said, faking astonishment. "I am not an uncle! That's it!" Before she could tickled them more, they slithered away and ran towards James, hiding behind him, still giggling. Audrey looked up and smiled at her best friend who had his arms crossed over his broad chest with an amused smirk on his face. "You gonna stop me from taking the young ones?" she challenged, playfully.
"I reckon I am," he said, smiling. They had always played this game when they were younger.
"Well, this town ain't big enough for the two of us. Draw!"
Carol laughed at the two best friends antics. They were quite a pair. She loved Audrey. Audrey had been the bridesmaid at her and James' wedding and had been the godmother for both kids. She meant a lot to this family and James has known her all her life. Carol had heard rumors that Audrey had lost her virginity to James and that they had loved each other very much but apparently those feelings had died. Sometimes, Carol wondered about that though. First loves are not easily forgotten especially since Audrey came over almost every week for a visit. But Carol trusted the two of them. What had happened between them was ancient history now.
James chuckled. "Easy does it, partner, easy does it."
Carol laughed and looked at Audrey. "Well, let me clean up and start supper. You'll be staying, won't you?" She did not wait for an answer. "Of course you will!"
Audrey grinned. "Well, with you assuming that, sure!" Carol returned her smile and the five went into the house. Audrey sat on the couch, Kyle and Rebbecca instantly jumping up with her. James watched them and deep down, his heart ached. He remembered back when they were teenagers and when they had loved each other, when she had lost her virginity to him. It was a night he would never forget.
Carol stared at her husband, jealousy coming to the surface but she instantly stamped down the feeling. James was hers, there was nothing to be worried about. He was a faithful man. But as he looked at Audrey, she started to wonder if it was more than just friendship he felt for her. Of course, there was nothing more. James loved Audrey as a best friend, a sister basically but he loved Carol more than that. Even though she did not want to doubt him, the thoughts that had once plagued her mind about the pair came back. It was the past and would stay that way, she assured herself. James loved her and would never leave her for another woman.
But Audrey was not just any woman.
