Giveth and Taketh Away

I've wondered for so long

What it is you do to me

You give me something to love

As birds love the open sky

You give me color

In my otherwise black and white world

You are what I yearn to see

As if my eyes were given to view you.

But what of all you take from me?

You took long ago

Hundreds of thoughts in my mind

As though nothing else matters now

All things I thought I knew of love

Are now in shades of gray

And of course my innocence

Is tossed away as you approach me

But most of all I see now

You're taken my breath

Like a sharp wind in an open field

I have no defense

But to lie down

And wait for you to pass

Hoping and wishing secretly

That you will remain

All my days
