i will be old (the cure is elusive)

they ask what is my greatest fear:

sharks and falling and the darkest places,
knives and shadows and the strangest faces.
and maturity at its highest peak, where dimples
turn to wrinkles,
and your giggles are hoarse coughs.

darkness! feared eternal, at every blink of the eye
madness! at every thoughtful blank of the mind:
who am i, where am i, am i, am i...

i will be old.

(i am just another human
destined to die.)

but i'm still trying to break from the mold.
