My Lyrical Romance

"Standing on my own

Remembering the one I left at home

Forget about the life I used to know

Forget about the one I left at home

So now I'm standing here alone

I'm learning how to live life on my own…"

Heartbreak. It happens to the best of us. Thankfully, it only happened to me once. Don't worry this isn't a sob story about a broken heartened teenage girl. The rejection happened in second grade. At the tender age of eight, I went straight up to a small blue-eyed boy, declared my undying love for him, and finished it off with a kiss. "Yucky!" he yelled screaming and running away. Since that day, I have been circumspect

about keeping my hormones in check. Not that I don't want to find love. I do. Who doesn't? I'm just skeptical.

I won't say I'm different because that is unoriginal. I'm quirky, special some say. No not special like eat glue special, if so I'd be concerned for my mental health as well as my digestion. I don't look like most girls at my school; I'm not blonde and I don't wear forty pounds of eyeliner. I have dark hair and I have light blue eyes. I'm fix six and slender and I have no butt. Seriously, baby got no back.

"Sophie!" I looked up from my book slipping in a ribbon to keep my place as I sat it aside. Sadly, I turned off my music slipping it into my bag. It was the first day of senior year after all. It was time to be a socialite.

"Yin and Yang how was the Caribbean?" I asked grabbing my stuff and skipping to their car.

"Disappointing, did your know there really aren't any sexy pirates there?" Yang said as she got out of the drivers side of her yellow VW. Yang was as bohemian as always. She wore a pink top and a flowing flower skirt. Her blonde hair was in its usual braids.

"Too much damn sun and drunken college people, on the plus side I got to kick a guy in the crotch for grabbing my ass." Yin said. She walked over adjusting her black t-shirt, the chains on her shorts jingling as she walked. She played with one of the red streaks in her hair. Yin and Yang were twins, and as you may have guessed from their nicknames, they are complete opposites. Their real names are Jasmine and Jade but we hardly ever call them that.

"I agree the sun has never done me justice." I skipped over to the twins linking arms with them.

"I beg to differ." A tall lanky boy gallivanted over his golden hair catching the rays of the sun.

"Coop where the hell have you been?" I asked, whirling around quizzically staring at his tall figure.

"Band camp." He said. Yin and Yang exchanged knowing glances.

"What happens at band camp…"Yin began.

"Stays at band camp!" Yang said wiggling her eyebrows. I laughed for the first time in weeks relishing the feeling of being with my friends again.

"Then I won't tell you a thing." He said and walked ahead of us whistling as he went.

"Harold Cooper what HAVE you been up to?" I yelled after him. He stiffened and turned around to face me. Oh, bugger.

"Girl…" Yin started drawing out the syllable.

"Run damn it!" Yang shouted. I dropped my stuff and hauled ass Coop on my tail (wow that sounds wrong). Rephrase, he was chasing me.

"You can't outrun me!" Coop shouted.

"Watch me." I said and whipped around a corner. I collided with someone and hit the grass with a load thud. I propped myself up on my arms looking down at the person I was squishing.

"Ew." I said and attempted to get up but my foot caught on something.

"Buttons, I've been at school five minutes and you're already on top of me. Did you miss me that much?"

"Don't call me that asshole." I said trying to wiggle away from him; he rolled over on top of me.

"Buttons please this is the most fun I've had in ages." He pleaded.

"Ahhhhhhhhh!" I yelled in frustration. Coop rounded the corner.

"Ah PDA, eyes my beautiful eyes." Coop shrieked fumbling around pretending to be blind.

"A little help Coop I'm being sexual assaulted." I begged. Yin and Yang rounded the corner.

"Oi what are you two doing?" The twins observed, looks of confusion simultaneously gracing their faces.

"Off!" I yelled and pushed him off me, getting up and stomping in the opposite direction, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Adam Addison I loathe you with the intensity of one thousand super novas." I screamed.

"Loathe…love, not much of difference Buttons." Adam said quickening his pace to walk beside me the others trailing behind.

"For someone with a vocabulary as small as yours that makes sense." I sneered.

"Ouch want some ice for that burn?" A big brown hair and eyed guy called form behind us.

"Teddy Bear!" I yelled jumping into his arms; he enveloped me in a bear hug. Yin and Yang came over and wrapped their arms around us forming a huge group hug.

"Hey Buttons, I missed you too." I giggled and hugged him again. I jumped up to ruffle his curly brown hair.

"Sure he can call you that." Adam said rolling his eyes and running a hand through his dark hair.

"HE is adorable in case you haven't noticed." I stated gesturing to Theodore Alexander Hamilton (yeah I know why do you think I call him Teddy Bear?)

"I'm sorry I don't think guys are adorable." Adam said picking up his stuff as well as mine.

"It's not my fault you're ADD." I said sticking my tongue out.

"ADD!" Was shouted from another direction to the tune of that annoying song that goes "hey baby, hey baby."

"They're coming at us from all sides duck in cover!" I yelled and hid behind Teddy bear, he let out a deep growly laugh. I peeked out form behind Teddy's big back.

"Ghost man, how's it?" Adam said as a tall, buff silver haired guy jogged up. They exchanged those advanced man handshakes that seem fun but are in fact too complicated and tiring hence why God invented the high five.

"Greetings." Ghost said casually. I ran up and hugged him, followed by the twins. Ghost stared towards the school with his dark brown eyes penetrating into the souls of people passing by and sighed.

"Okay let's get this over with." He said and we all walked inside laughing and chatting the whole way. We all went our separate ways to our new lockers. Mine was number 333, well go figure with that one. ADD leaned against the locker adjacent me.

"So how was summer?" He asked. I thought about it. Well, I did nothing except read like forty-four books and watch TV. Sure there was the occasional concert or movie but it was just really boring.

"Uneventful." I responded.

"Well, this year will be interesting for you, I'm sure of it." He said running his fingers through his hair.

"You look antsy you okay?" I questioned dropping my bag on the floor and rummaging through it the smell of new books wafted towards me.

"I have to do freshman orientation today. I'm freaking stressed. I have to fake caring about worthless freshman." He sneered.

"Wow aren't you compassionate."

"Yeah I am." He said. I reached for the slip of paper that had my combination on it; I started to turn the knob.

"I'll see you later buttons." He said and started to walk away.

"Later ADD." I said as the lock on my locker clicked and opened. I lifted my hand and opened my locker. I expected an empty locker but that's not what I found. In the locker lay a white rose, an iPod (the really expensive kind), and a piece of paper. Oh great someone left their crap in here. I looked around the hall. No one was there. I looked back at the stuff and noticed my name on the paper. Okay this is getting weird. I reached for the paper. It was an envelope I broke the seal and read the letter.

You forget who I am

I will never forget you

You haunt my dreams

You give light to my nightmares

I want to be in your heart

As you are in mine

You are my soul

So I want to be yours

You deny me I accept you

You push

I pull

You're my synonym

I'm your antonym

You deny me

I accept you

You cry

I drown in your tears

You laugh

I breathe easy

You hate me

I love you

You are my music

Let me be yours

Please let me be yours

Music connects us all. It is a universal truth, something everyone knows. It brings together people who are as opposite as you and I. It helps us express our deepest emotions. Therefore, I'll give you this iPod and a set of rules.

1.) This iPod is empty except for one song. A song I chose for you. Now you can put whatever songs you want on here, it is completely up to you.

2.) We take turns. I put one song on, now it's your turn. Add a song and leave it in the farthest corner of the library behind the audio section. Then the next day I leave it in the same place plus one song adding to a cycle.

3.) Leave me notes I want to communicate with you. Let me read your thoughts.

4.) This is the golden rule of this whole game. Promise me you'll give me a chance to be human. I make mistakes but I love you. This whole thing may seem weird to you but this has been a long time coming.

P.S- Buttons I promise I'm not some creepy stalker last time I checked so I promise I won't hurt you.

Your Angel of Music

Okay. Wow. This is different. I read the note several times examining it front and back. I sat down against the lockers. Okay let's try to find out who this guy is. Well only the seniors know I'm called Buttons so that rules out the underclassmen and I'm sure it's not a chick. There are exactly 50 guys in the senior class. They know how much I love music, they know my favorite movie and soundtrack is Phantom of the Opera, hence the reference. The iPod is expensive so the person has to be loaded.

My brilliant train of thought was interrupted when I heard one of the large wooden doors slam. Ghost came running down the corner at top speed making him a blur. Three guys on the football team followed him down the hall. I heard Ghost's laughs echo off the walls. First day and Ghost had already done some crazy shit apparently. I heard a screech and he came running around the corner and sat next to me breathing in deeply.

"Ghost what are…" I began.

"Shhhhhh." He whispered and picked up one of my books putting it in front of my face. My head jerked to the left as I heard a loud bang and the football players came running right past Ghost and I. He laughed and handed me my book.

"All brawn no brain." He leaned his head against the back of the locker and turned to face me.

"What's up kiddo?" He asked. Here is the thing about Ghost you have to get to know him and it takes time it took me six years just to get to where we are now. He has major trust issues.

I turned the iPod in my hands on, plugged the earphones into my ears, and pressed play. The screen flashed and Hero/Heroine by Boys Like Girls:

It's too late baby, there's no turning around
I've got my hands in my pocket and my head in a cloud
This is how I do
When I think about you
I never thought that you could break me apart
I keep a sinister smile and a hold of my heart
You want to get inside
Then you need to get in line
But not this time

Cause you caught me off guard
Now I'm running and screaming

I feel like a hero and you are my heroine

I won't try to philosophize
I'll just take a deep breath and I'll look in your eyes
This is how I feel
And its so so real
I got a closet filled up to the brim
With the ghosts of my past and the skeletons
And I don't know why
You'd even try
But I won't lie

You caught me off guard
Now I'm running and screaming

I feel like a hero and you are my heroine
Do you know that your love is the sweetest sin?

And I feel a weakness coming on
Never felt so good to be so wrong
Had my heart on lockdown
And then you turned me around
I'm feeling like a new born child
Every time I get a chance to see you smile
It's not complicated
I was so jaded

And you caught me off guard
Now I'm running and screaming

I feel like a hero and you are my heroine
Do you know that your love is the sweetest sin?

(I feel like a hero and you are my heroine)
And I feel a weakness coming on
Never felt so good to be so wrong
Had my heart on lockdown
And then you turned me around
(Do you know that your love is the sweetest sin?)
I'm feeling like a new born child
Every time I get a chance to see you smile
It's not complicated
I was so jaded

(I feel like a hero and you are my heroine)
And I feel a weakness coming on
Never felt so good to be so wrong
Had my heart on lockdown
And then you turned me around
(Do you know that your love is the sweetest sin?)
I'm feeling like a new born child
Every time I get a chance to see you smile
It's not complicated
I was so jaded

"Ghost I have to go places." I said gathering my stuff and shoving it rapidly in my locker.

"That's vague." He observed.

"Tell me about it." I said and slammed my locker shut and jogged to the courtyard. I spotted Yin and Yang under a giant tree.

"You cannot call them techno, sure they have some electronic background but the majority is acoustic." Yin scoffed.

"Yes my dear sister but you are missing the message of the music. It's a combination of techno and retro in perfect balance which is what makes them a great underground band." Yang said dramatically weaving flowers into a crown and placing it on her head.

"Whoa, Buttons you look dazed and confused." Yin said leaning back and rolling her eyes in her twin's direction. I gulped in sweet breaths of oxygen.

"Can you guys keep a secret?"

There you go hope you enjoy! Read and review!
