tonight brought the
first snow of the season;
it clung to the branches,
settled quietly on the ground,
and gave the dying landscape
life again.

i can hardly believe that
it's winter (again), but
i suppose it's time – it
was an unusually long
autumn; the leaves have
been falling forever – and
for once, i'm ready;

ready for strolls down
sidewalks glittering with
snowflakes and lights, for
vast expanses of calm
empty whiteness, and, best
of all, for keeping warm
underneath a mountain
of blankets.

(my favorite sort of winter wonderland.)
