Chapter 5

When Kenzie first walked into the house, she saw Anza on the couch, watching T.V. and looking miserable. "Anza! What's wrong, sweetie?"

"I don't feel good."

"I can see that. What's wrong? What hurts?"

"I have a headache and my stomach hurts."

"Oh, Anza. How long have you felt like this?"

"It came on about an hour ago."

"An hour! Anza, why didn't you call me? You know how Aunt Cassie gets when you're sick. She would've made me leave." Kenzie paused, placing a hand on Anza's forehead. "Hmm, no fever." Suddenly, the phone rang. "Hello? Oh, hi, Veronica. Yeah, but Anza's sick. Really? Great. I'll see you soon. All right. Love you. Bye." She turned back to Anza. "Sweetie, I know you really wanted to go to David's tonight, but I'm not letting you. But, Veronica just called, and she's going to come watch you, so I can go to David's. Will you be alright while I go get ready?"

"Yeah, Kenz. I'll be fine." Yes! She fell for it! Hook, line, and sinker. Thank you, Aunt Cassie! You were brilliant!

Fifteen minutes later, Kenzie came out. "How do I look?"

"You look amazing! I made a great choice when I bought you that dress!"

"Yes you did. I'm going to get going now. Veronica should be here in five minutes. Be good!"

"Kenzie, I'm sick. How can I not be good?"

"You are so funny. I'll be back before midnight."

"Okay. Go, before you're late."

Kenzie walked out the door, closing it behind her. As soon as Anza heard the door slam, she pulled out her overnight bag, which she had hidden underneath the covers. She turned off the T.V. and waited patiently for Veronica to arrive. "Anza? Where are you, sweetheart?"

"I'm in the family room, Veronica."

Veronica walked into the family room and hugged her. "Are you ready to go?"

"Yeah." They walked out the door, down the stairs, and climbed into Veronica's Lexus. She drove to her house.

"Aunt Anza!" Kayla called out.

"Hi, sweetheart. I missed you."

"Anza, you were here last week."

"James!" He hugged her. Where are the twins?"

"Sleeping." Suddenly, they heard two cries. "Or at least they were. I wonder if they know you're here."

"I'll get them."

"Can I help you?"

"Sure!" The two sisters headed down the hall.

They returned not five minutes later. "They're getting so big, Veronica. I can't believe they're six months old already. It doesn't seem that long ago."

"It really wasn't. Remember, they were almost six weeks old when we brought them home."

"Sit down, Veronica. You've been on your feet all day. So, Anza, why are you here tonight?"

"Kenzie and David have a date, and Aunt Cassie thinks they should be alone." Anza pouted.

Veronica sighed, "I know you wanted to go sweetie, but Kenzie and David need…"

"Alone time."

"Exactly. You know how David feels about you, Esperanza Isabelle. He probably saw right through Aunt Cassie's ploy. He knows you're not really sick."

Anza's face lit up. "Really?"

"Yes, sweetheart. David's learned to look through Aunt Cassie's disguises. It's Kenzie that I'm worried about. Although she'll probably realize that you're not sick and that it was a trick. But, by that time, dinner will be served and eaten. What time did Kenzie say she'd be back?"

"She said before midnight. But, you know how Kenzie and David are. They'll probably watch a movie or something."

"She'll probably fall asleep."

"And by the time she wakes up, it will be after midnight. David's such a gentleman, he'll probably insist on her staying the night."

"Kenzie wouldn't let that happen. Not on a first date. Since Hector, she's been so closed off to the world." Veronica looked at her half-sister. "Do you think David can be trusted?"

"Absolutely. David would never do anything to hurt Kenzie. Aunt Cassie gave him 'the speech'. He told me that when he picked me up at school last Wednesday. I don't think he'd let Kenzie do anything dangerous. When Kenzie broke her wrist, he insisted on driving her to and from work every day."

"Really. I got to know him really well. He took me to piano for those three weeks. He is so awesome. He's definitely brother-in-law material."

"Esperanza Isabelle Grayston! Are you serious?"

"Please. They're not even dating yet. Not now, but I'm pretty sure that David will end up asking Kenzie to marry him."

"Mackenzie Alysa Brookhaven." The two said together. Both smiled.

"It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?"

"I love it."

James smiled as he watched his wife and half-sister-in-law. He loved Veronica's family as much as his own, and he would step up to protect any one of the girls in an instant. Back when he first met Veronica, Kenzie was still dating Hector. When he met him, James automatically disliked and distrusted him. He couldn't have been happier when Kenzie finally broke up with him. He hadn't met David yet. "Nica, when's the next family function, so that I can meet this David?"

Veronica laughed, "James, the next family function is Thanksgiving, but I'm not sure Kenz will bring David. Besides, Anza told me on the drive over that mom and Chris are absolutely crazy about him, and you know how Chris is when Kenzie's concerned. They're thrilled with her choice. There's no way you won't like him."

"If you're sure."

"I'm positive. You're overreacting. Relax."

"I am NOT overreacting."

"Yes, you are. You always get like this."

"That's because I love you and everything that's important to you, Nica. Your family is my family. I will fight like a tiger to keep my family safe and happy."

"I knew there was a reason I married you."

"Other than my good looks?" He stated tickling her.

"JAMES!" she laughed. Anza loved seeing them so happy. "Anza, will you grab the girls? This could get violent." Anza grabbed Jessie and Maddie and took then into the kitchen.

Laying Jessie down in the portable crib, she grabbed two bottles. Heating one up, she fed Jessie. After Jessie fell asleep, Anza switched Jessie and Maddie. Heating up the second bottle, she fed Maddie. Grabbing both girls, Anza took them back to their bedroom, where she changed their diapers and put them down. Coming back out to the living room, she saw stuff everywhere. "What happened here?"

Veronica and James looked at her. "Tickle fight." Veronica said. "Where are the girls?"

"I fed them, changed them, and put them down."

"Whoa. Thanks." She checked the time. "It's six. I think it's time to eat. Kayla!"

Kayla came out as fast as she could. "Yes, momma?"

"It's dinner time. Go with Aunt Anza and wash up, please."

Kayla nodded and Anza picked her up. "We'll be out in five minutes."

"All right." Veronica headed into the kitchen to heat up the night's meal. Seven minutes later, the four sat down to eat.

Two hours later

It was eight o' clock. "Kayla, bath time!"

"Momma!" Kayla was none too happy about her nightly bath.

"Come on, Kaykay." Anza tried.

"NO!" It was a full blown temper tantrum.

"Kayla! Jessie and Maddie are asleep! If you wake them up…" Suddenly, two cries were heard. "Mikayla Rose!" James came up from the basement. "Jay, Kayla woke the girls. Make your choice."

Knowing that Veronica was the stricter disciplinarian, James said, "I'll get the girls calmed down, Nica. You can handle Kayla."

"Mikayla Rose Kendall, you are in so much trouble. So, this is what's going to happen. You will take your bath, and then you will go to bed. Tomorrow, and for the rest of the week, you will get no dessert and you will go to bed a half-hour earlier. Got it?"

"No buts. MARCH!"

"Let's go, Kayla." Anza took Kayla's hand and led her to the bathroom.

Half an hour later, Veronica marched Kayla out. "Say goodnight to daddy and Aunt Anza."

"Night night daddy. Night night Aunt Anza."

"Night, kitten" James said as he hugged her close.

"Good night, sweetie."

"Anza, it's almost bedtime for you too."

James took over as soon as Anza shot a look at Veronica. "Anza…"

"Yes, sir." She stood and obediently headed into the bathroom to brush her teeth.

"I didn't mean now!" James called.

Anza skipped back out. "Really?'

"Yes. You may stay up no later than ten. I'll wake you up so we can sneak you back home."

"All right!"

"You're welcome. Now, go get your snack while I put Kayla to bed." Giving Kayla one last kiss, Anza nodded.

Kenzie and David were just sitting down to watch a movie. "David, I should really get home." She protested feebly.

"Nonsense! We both know you want to stay, Kenz."

"But, Anza…"

"Is fine. You told me yourself that Veronica's watching her. You also told me that she practically ordered you to come over without her. She's fine. Let's watch a movie. You pick."

Kenzie grinned and dove for the cabinet. She picked the most girlish movie she could find, which wasn't originally in the cabinet, but in the small bag Kenzie always had with her. She sighed. Anza… "Here you go."

"Pride and Prejudice?" David looked disgusted. "But Kenzie," He whined. "That's a chick flick."

"You let me choose. Be glad you don't have Titanic, because that was my first choice."

"Do you want to bore me to death?" he asked, jokingly, as he turned on the movie. Sitting back on the couch, he wrapped an arm around Kenzie, helping her get comfortable.

"Shhh!" she shushed him, hitting him on the arm, and then slowly relaxing into his arms.

Two hours later

"Anza! It's time for bed, sweetheart."

Anza came out and kissed both Veronica and James goodnight. "Good night, Veronica. Good night, James."

"Good night, sweetheart."

"Good night, Anza. See you in the morning."

"Maybe not, Jay. I have to wake her up early so we can sneak her back home before Kenzie notices. Remember, she's supposed to be sick." Veronica said.

"Oh, yeah. Well, will you be here next weekend?"

"I think so."

"Well, if I don't see you tomorrow, I'll see you next weekend, OK? I'll even pick you up from school."

"All right!"

"Shhh! The girls are sleeping!"

"Sorry, V."

"That's alright, Anza. Go to sleep. Otherwise you're going to be so crabby when I wake you up tomorrow."

"Okay. Night."

"Night." They watched as Anza skipped off into the room she called her own. "I wish she spent more time with us, Jay."

"Nica, sweetheart, we see her every weekend in the summer, every holiday, and every long weekend during the school year." James wrapped an arm around Veronica's shoulders.

David slowly got up. The movie had ended five minutes ago. Poor Kenzie hadn't even made it three-quarters of the way through. She was exhausted. He debated whether to wake her up. Shaking his head, he got up to search for a blanket. Finding one, he returned to Kenzie's side. After covering her with the blanket, he leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Good night, princess." Standing up, he looked down at her. She looked so serene. At that moment, David realized he would do anything to keep Kenzie safe.
