Monitored Patients

Open your eyes to a blinding, cold light
Intended to calm and intended to soothe
Forcing vision to focus
On the IV by the bed
Asking them questions
Answers only to confuse

The birds sing outside of a freedom that
I will never see, I will never know
Lost in a disinfected world
Of needles and bandages
Vulnerability
Isn't easy to faceā€¦ alone

The rhythm of life was always oversimplified
And my heartbeat preferred something
A bit more complicated
So pull the curtains
I'm out of time and out of tune
And the lady in the bed next to me
Is asking for a different room

I get up to walk and head for the door
Seeking escape and searching for you
They say you wouldn't visit
Yell for more medication
But I'm too tired to care
It's not like this is new

Monotonous injections
And drugged up routines
Helpless and sterile
With walls doused in bleach

The rhythm of life was always oversimplified
And my heartbeat preferred something
A bit more complicated
So pull the curtains
I'm out of time and out of tune
And the lady in the bed next to me
Is asking for a different room

Rushing with gurneys to save different lives
Thanked with blank stares, you're causing a scene
Tell them to rest but don't mention death
They're still invincible
They're still delusional
Now living in a machine

A/N: Dedicated to a distant relative of mine who didn't know this experience, but unfortunately, knew someone who did. Unfortunately, it was ineffective.
