Speaking Without Words
They both sat staring into the dregs of their coffee cups, each silently hoping the other would be the one to speak first. He fiddled with the spoon in his hands, and she stared at a cigarette burn on the floor, obsessively studying the multitude of footwear that passed by.
Nearly ten minutes had passed before she became fed up with the silence encompassing their tiny table in the middle of the café. All around them, people were smiling and recounting tales of their children, or discussing that afternoon's lecture. A few people were pouring over textbooks, or perusing the internet, and yet the two of them couldn't even manage to speak.
Which is why she decided to go first. "Listen, I may never be this brave again, so I'm just going to say this, okay?"
