Look where we are

And wonder what

Has brought us to this point?

Did we do this?

Or did outside forces

Push us in this direction?

xoxox

I'm lying on the roof

Watching the stars

Through the peek-a-boo tree branches.

The streets are deserted.

The neighbors sit on their porch

Playing poker and drinking Coke.

But the street is mostly dark

And the neighbors ignore me.

xoxox

I wonder if you're home

Looking out your window

Seeing the stars

Through the peek-a-boo tree branches.

Or maybe you're already asleep

Or drinking rum in the basement

Or sitting in your room

In the dark

Listening to the breeze

And hearing memories.

xoxox

The neighbors put away their cards.

All but one step inside.

The last one sits on the porch swing.

He sings a sad song

That no one but me will hear.

I know he's thinking about the stars

Alone and together we look at them

Through the peek-a-boo tree branches.

And I'm thinking about you and me.

xoxox

No outside force

Put me on the roof

Or you in the basement

Or my neighbor on the porch.

We moved ourselves

Our thoughts compelled us into action

And reflection.

I am here because of me

You are there because of you

And my neighbor sings a sad song

Because of himself.

And until thought compels me to move

I'll stay on the roof

Watching the stars

Through the peek-a-boo tree branches.
