I hate the mere notion of fate. It is too easy. Fate grants absolution before forgiveness has been earned. Fate excuses ignorance and evil while rewarding coincidence and dumb luck. It negates passion and desire. It ignores motivation. It tolerates passivity. It shelters weakness.
People are quick to claim the credit for their triumphs, and just as eager to blame fate for all of their shortcomings and disappointments. Don't they see that they can't have it both ways? Free will or fate -- never both.
No, I don't believe in fate. But on dark, tragic days, I wish that I could.
