Well, this fic was just going to be one chapter, but inspiration hit me like a wet trout and I wrote this. I'm thinking of making this into a series of loosly connected scenes that slowly tie together. Not like a real story, but not a series of oneshots either. I dunno. Feedback would be helpful.
The wind pulled at her hair and face, stretching her features into a pained grimace. Sand pelted her, causing her to flinch sporadically. She stood resolutely, staring at the horizon like a mother demanding to know her child's whereabouts. The sea offered no explanation.
In absolute fury she bent and grabbed a fistful of sand and shells. She hurled it into the sea with as much force and rage as she could muster. A ragged scream escaped her throat, echoing across the sand-rippled water. The tide lapped at her toes, offering the only comfort it could. She fell to her knees, and let her anger and sadness pour out of her, soaking her cheeks. She huddled in the shallows until the sea withdrew its comfort and left her shivering among the shells. Forcing herself to stand, she once again faced the horizon. With blame in her eyes, she watched the waves roll into each other.
The sea was selfish. She bit the inside of her cheek, trapping the dregs of her pain inside her mouth. Pride would not allow her to succumb to grief again. The sea had seen enough to know what it had done to her. Folding her arms across her chest, she backed slowly up the beach. The ocean was not sorry for what it had taken from her. It was not sorry for what she had lost. She could not teach the sea compassion nor regret. Turning around, she followed the path away from the beach and disappeared behind the dunes.
