Everyone Says

By

Katie Chew

Act I

When the curtains open, Dari and Benny are sitting together on a bench, with Dari's head on his shoulder. Benny looks over at her.

Benny

Dari… You never really told me why you ran away…

Dari's eyes clench shut. She takes a deep breath.

Dari

I…

Benny

You don't have to tell me… It's fine.

Dari

No… You deserve to know… I just don't know exactly how to start… I guess…

I always seemed to be the small one, of everyone I knew. The weakest… The helpless one. Everybody always said that… they said I couldn't survive the real world. I would crash and burn on my own. I hated them for it, but some part of me believed they were right.

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

Everybody say's "they lose their way"

Whoever's story told them that, they've never heard mine

How I learned to stand throughout my days

The bench is pulled back in darkness and soon Dari is alone on the empty stage under a spotlight.

Everybody says this

Everybody says that

Everybody says the good die young

Everybody says this

But I have got this feeling

I know that my life has just begun

I know now that helpless, are the last ones left alive

But there is something no one seems to know

Everyone will die, to let the helpless one survive

Starve so that the helpless one may grow

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

Before the end, they drown among their tears

Whoever's story told them that, they've never heard mine

I passed them all, surpassed them all by years

Everybody says this

Everybody says that

Everybody says the good die young

Everybody says this

But I have got this feeling

I know that my life has just begun

Everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

Look at me, just see, I'm still alive

Whoever's story said this, they've never heard mine

Just hear me out, and learn, how I survived

When I was small, and when I got older too, I always looked like my mom. I heard people say it everywhere I went, and I couldn't stand it. I hated my mom, and being compared to her, wasn't on the top of my to do list. I guess I also always knew, that even though I was the spitting image of my mother, I was just like my dad. Not my looks, just… The way I thought. I hated both comparisons… even though they were legit. They were still shit. I am me, thank you ver much!

Slowly light appears at the edges of the stage and you can see people gathered around Dari.

Company

That pretty little girl looks like her mother

That pretty little girl has got that shine in her eyes

That pretty little girl looks just like her mother

Dari

But my soul is my own father's in disguise

Company

That pretty little girl looks like her mother

That pretty little girl has got that pretty oval face

That pretty little girl looks like her mother

She moves with such majestic, lovely grace

Porcelain face and emerald stare

Full pink lips, and corn silk hair

Honey voice, so soft and sweet

That saying, "mother's child" is ever so concrete

Dari

They say, "That pretty little darling, looks just like her ma"

And I'm tired of hearing, "beautiful green eyes"

I'm tired of hearing "A beauty just like her ma"

I know my soul is my own father's in disguise

Company

Porcelain face and emerald stare

Baby pink lips and corn silk hair

Honey soothing voice, so soft and sweet

That saying "Mother's child" Is ever so concrete

Dari

Father's child, through and through

Although they never realized it was true

I'm more like him, than I'd ever be like her

But even knowing that, I find myself unsure

Because I'm thinking,

I'd rather

Be like neither of them

I'm thinking

I'd rather

Be judged for who I am

Company

Full pink lips

Emerald stare

Honey voice

Corn silk hair

Dari

I think I'd rather

Be judged alone

I think I'd rather

Be judged for me on my own

Company

That pretty little girl

Pretty little Dari baby

Mommy's little girl

Beautiful and wild

Dari

No, I'm not my mother's child

The people all start to move away from the center of the stage. There's just a kind of sullen dark glow on the stage. Dari is alone in the center and the other people are less significant on the sides of the stage.

Dari

Daddy's girl

Just like her daddy, girl

They never tell me that

But I know it's true

Daddy's girl

Just like her daddy, girl

They never say it to my face

But I'll say it to you

But daddy knows, I'm daddy's girl

And he takes me and tells me it's true

"You're just like your daddy" he say's

"And I'm just like you"

But I don't want to be daddy's girl

I won't ever be daddy's girl

He can do what he will

But I just won't keep still

I'll fight not to be daddy's girl

No I will not be daddy's girl

Dari's father is illuminated behind her. Spotlighted in the dark of the stage.

Dad

Daddy's little Dari girl

Baby you're my Dari girl

(Repeat in the background of Dari singing)

Dari

He may take me to bed

But I'll forget what he has said

I'll forget those words

"Daddy's girl"

"So, so good, she's my Dari girl"

I'll just push all the memoirs out of my mind

So never again can I find

Those memoirs I hate

They make me irate

Those memories that show that I'm his

Both

Dari girl

Daddy's girl

Dari

I don't want to be

Both

Daddy's girl

Daddy walks up behind her and wraps his arms around Dari. She looks like she's sick, but doesn't move when he kisses her neck.

Dad

Dari girl

You're daddy's girl

Dari girl, be mine

Dari girl

You're daddy's girl

Dari Girl, You're mine

Company

Softly and solemnly

That pretty little girl looks like her mother

That pretty little girl, she's got that shine in her eyes

That pretty little girl looks just like her mother

Dari/Dad

But (my/her) soul is (my/her) own father's in disguise

Company

Mother's child

And she's daddy's little girl

Daddy says dance

And she'll stand right up and twirl

Mother's child

She has every single trait

But she's her daddy's girl

And it makes her so irate

Dari

I' am not my mother's child

I'll not be my daddy's girl

I'm not mommy's little pride

I won't stand right up and twirl

No I'm not my mother's child

I am NOT my father's child!

Daddy walks up behind her and wraps his arms around Dari. She looks like she's sick, but doesn't move when he kisses her neck.

Dad

Dari girl

You're daddy's girl

Dari girl you're mine

Dari girl

You're daddy's girl

Dari girl be mine

Company

Porcelain face

And corn silk hair

Baby pink lips

She's so soft and fair

Emerald eyes

So soft and sweet

That saying "mother's child"

Is ever so concrete

Dad

Daddy's girl

Dari

No

Dari pulls away from her father.

Company

Mother's child

Dari

No

Company and Dad

Beautiful and wild

Dari

I am not my parent's child!

The company slowly backs off the stage and the spotlight is brighter and the stage darker. Her father pulls her back to him. Then he backs out of the spotlight and you can just see Dari.

Dari

I guess, no matter how many times I said it to myself, no matter how much I tried to make it not true… It didn't ever change. I was my father, my father's daughter, and my father's little fucking toy. For when he was bored… Well he must have been bored a lot. Every night… and sometimes I would get a break. Sometimes he would actually sleep with my mother instead of me. That was strange for me, and it shouldn't have been. It wasn't right, what he did to me. Still, really, what bothered me most wasn't what my father did to me. What bothered me was how my mother always ignored it. She always turned away and paid no attention to us. I didn't mean anything to her. At least my father cared about me. Some sick part of him cared, but my mother never did. All I ever heard from her was "Stand up straight and act like a lady. Don't be so tomboyish Dari. Be a good little girl" Daddy let me be whoever I wanted to be, and supported me. But raped me every night in secret. Everyone has their flaws. My parents flaws were just… Bigger than most people's... Oh god… I'm going on and on about how terrible life was with my parents. There were good things that came with my life too. Cyril… for one. She was my sister. And she was always there for me. She never left me behind.

It was always right that Cyril knew

It was always her who was there

When daddy would leave me alone, at dawn

Or any time, anywhere

Cyril was always a shoulder to cry on

Cyril knew how to be true

It was Cyril who helped me survive through that time

And Cyril always knew

Cyril got every moment

Understood, every thought

Cyril knew how to be there for me

Lead me when I was lost

And Cyril you understood

Cyril, you helped me stand

But I wasn't there when you needed me most

I let you sink into the sand

So help me I'll stand so it wasn't in vain

Keep through the smooth and the rough

Those single words kept me living for ages

Kept me through easy and tough

Cyril I'll live because you wanted me too

Cyril I won't just give up

Cyril, you helped me through everything

So for you, I'll keep it all up

It was right, that Cyril knew everything

It was right that she understood

It seemed like she'd survive everything

Till she showed us that nobody could

It was right that Cyril got everything

Understood every word

Told me each night, I was everything

And her comforts, never seemed absurd

Dari's father returns to the spotlight and Dari freezes.

Dad

Dari baby

Dari baby

Daddy's little Dari baby

Dari baby

Dari baby

Be my baby girl

Dari baby

Dari baby

Daddy's little girl

Always does what daddy says

Always acts like daddy says

If daddy says dance

Dari will stand up and twirl

Dari

While her father continues to repeat- "Dari girl, Daddy's girl" over and over again.

Because daddy has Dari locked in a cage

Daddy is holding her close

Daddy escapes into a jealous rage

And it's Dari who fears the most

Oh when daddy ends up enraged

It's Dari who takes the blame

She's ripped away from her cage

And then daddy stakes his claim

Dad

And Dari girl

You're daddy's baby

Daddy's baby girl

Dari

And Dari will beg and plead

But the circle just won't end

Into the dark, she'll recede

Until she just cannot pretend

That it's going to get better

Because she knows that it's not

She knows that once she was taken

She'd be forever caught

Dad

Dari girl

Stay with your daddy girl

Stay with your daddy

Stay here with me

Dari

And every morning, when he's gone

She lays there, lost and alone

Hating his very soul

And shaken to the bone

Dad slips away into the darkness of the stage, and Dari is left standing alone. She drops to her knees.

And every morning she hears his voice

Echoing through her mind

And she knows, she doesn't have a choice

He'll be back again tonight

Then Cyril appears in the spotlight beside her, and wraps her arms around Dari. She comforts her as she sings.

But every morning Cyril comes

And wipes away her tears

Holds Dari close to her heart

Brushes away her fears

Cyril

Dari, it will be fine

Sister, you will be all right

Dari, I'm here every time

You're not alone in this fight

Dari, Dari, Dari

Cyril looks to the audience and stands up and walks back. The spotlight fades away from Dari for a moment and Cyril begins to sing.

My sister is clinging to a ray of hope

My sister's so much stronger than I can believe

So my sister, is holding tight to that breaking rope

Trying to not to fall before she reaches her dreams

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Dari hold fast

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

I know you can last

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

I believe in you

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Dari, just hold through

Baby sister's holding through, clinging to her life

She knows how to make it through, knows how to survive

She knows how to take a hit, and live among such strife

But I can see her withering; She doesn't seem quite... as alive

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Dari hold through

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

I believe in you

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Fight it through the strife

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Don't give up on life

How could she hold through, through so much strife?

How can she hold through, day after day?

Why is it that I'm the one, staring at that sharpened knife?

Maybe just watching, is worse than being prey

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

Fight for your dreams

But Dari, Dari, Dari girl

I can hear your screams

Dari, Dari, Dari girl

I hear them at night

Still Dari, Dari, Dari girl

You've got to fight your fight

Sister is clinging to a ray of hope

She's so much stronger than I can believe

Sister, is holding tight to that breaking rope

I know she won't fall before she reaches her dreams

Dari is illuminated before Cyril and Cyril starts comforting her again. Dari looks up. She puts her hand to Cyril's cheek, and Cyril looks into her eyes.

Dari

Cyril… I…

Cyril

What is it Dari girl?

Dari

…Cyril girl…

I'm leaving, for good

Cyril

You're running from here?

Running from home?

Dari

Cyril after everything! You still call this home?

This is daddy's prison for me!

This has never been my home!

Cyril

You're leaving me here

Leaving me with daddy

Dari

Cyril girl. Come with me!

Don't stay here with daddy!

Come with me to the city!

Cyril, come with me and be free!

Cyril

It's not so simple as that

You can't just run on a whim

I can come on a whim

What gave you this idea

That we should run today

We wouldn't make it

We wouldn't last a day

Dari

Cyril girl

Cyril girl

He'll kill her if I stay

Cyril

Kill who? Dari?

Dari

The baby inside me today

Cyril

Dari girl! You aren't!

Dari

It was bound to happen sometime

Cyril

You can't run! Just think of your baby!

Dari

I'll be careful, I'll be fine!

Cyril

Dari girl you better

Dari be cautious

Dari, for me!

Dari

But, Cyril are you coming?

Cyril

Dari… No… I can't just leave

Dari

I'll be back Cyril, someday

You'll see my baby and smile

Cyril, someday you'll come with me

Be it today, or in a long while

Cyril

Dari, sister, I'll see you

When are you leaving?

Dari

Tonight

Cyril

You packed your bags

Dari

Prepared for a silent flight

Cyril

See you in time

See you in time

Dari

Please, Cyril

Please come with me tonight

Cyril

Dari

I'm Sorry

But goodbye

Dari

Cyril girl. Come with me!

Don't stay here with daddy!

Come with me to the city!

Cyril, come with me and be free!

Cyril

Dari

I'm Sorry

But tonight is goodbye

Dari, I will see you in time

Both

Goodbye

I'll see you in time

The two girls embrace and the spotlight fades.

Act 2

The scene changes to depict Manhattan. Street vendors are out and people are out, some homeless, some tourists, and some locals. Dari is sitting on her duffel bag at stage right. She is holding a news paper in her hands, and she's paging through it, every so often bringing a hand down to her swollen abdomen. She throws the paper at the ground in frustration and stares at the city around her.

Benny

What are you doing out here on your own at night?

Dari looks up to see a young man of about twenty years old standing beside her. He holds out his hand and she takes it. He pulls her to her feet and shakes her hand.

I'm Benny Grayson, What is your name?

Dari

I'm Dari Pierson.

Benny

It seems to me you've lost your way. Shall I escort you home?

Dari

It seems you are mistaken; I've got no place to go

Benny

Should' a guessed it

Oh why else would

You be all alone

With a duffel bag for company

Dari

My bag's not much for company

Benny

I'd be better company

Dari

Don't think I'd fall for that

Benny

I don't mean it like that

And don't change the subject

I asked you a question

Dari

Tell me Mr. Grayson

How's it your business

How's it your business

What I'm doing on this street

Benny

Why Mrs. Pierson

I am just so curious

I am just so curious

Why you look so beat

Dari

Who said anything about Mrs?

How old do you think I am?

Benny

You never know these days…

How old are you anyway?

Dari

I'm almost fifteen

And you

Benny

Just turned eighteen…

But you

You changed the subject again

Dari

Observant aren't you

Could catch any clue

I bet you could guess what I'm doing alone

But I'll just tell you that I ran away from home

Oh… And just right now, I'm 'bout frozen to the bone

Benny

I see you're shivering

You need a place to stay?

Dari

How do I know you don't just want a lay?

Benny

With a pregnant girl?

Who's only fifteen?

Dari

Hey, some guys like it weird

And some are just desperate

I wonder which of the two

Which category would you?

Fall into?

Benny

Neither one would

Be me

And I think you misunderstood

Me.

My three roommates are there

Dari

Wow, so now I'm exited

Four desperate guys

You're so good at picking up girls

Benny

By best bud,

His sister,

And his girlfriend

Dari

Oooh

We've got two lezzies in the mix

Benny

Hey

Dari

I'm joking Benny

Play it cool

Sure I'll come with you

Benny

We live just around the corner store

Third floor walk up,

Not much but it's warm

Dari

Can't be choosey

When the rent's free

Benny

Who said anything about free?

The two of them laugh as they walk off the stage with Dari's stuff. Benny chuckles and the stage lights black out. When the lights come back on, the setting has changed to an industrial loft. There's a worn out couch and it's cluttered by cardboard boxes labeled 'Sarah's stuff' and 'Corey's junk' and 'Anna's shit'. The light is yellowish, and there is a small metal coffee table next to the couch that is covered with magazines, and coffee cups, and mail. There are extension cords all over the place, and a woman is half asleep on the couch.

Benny

Anna! You have a bed, you know?

Anna

You have got to calm down little bro!

Benny

I'm not your little bro

Anna

So?

Benny

So! Stop calling me that!

Anna

Sure thing little bro…

Benny laughs at her and then walks over and pulls the thin blanket off of her.

Benny!!

Benny

We have company Anna!

Anna turns to Dari and smirks

Anna

Wow Benny.

The first girl you manage to bring home

Is pregnant already.

Isn't it supposed to happen the other way around?

You bring her home and THEN you knock her up?

Benny

It's not my baby.

I found this little thing

Out in the cold

And I couldn't leave

Her there to freeze.

Anna

Yeah, Yeah ,Yeah…

Just shut up Ben.

Benny

Anna!

Company needs the couch,

So get your ass

Off of it

And sleep on

Your own bed!!

Anna gets up off of the couch grabs the blanket from Benny and then flicks the side of his forehead before walking off stage right. Dari giggled at her and then looked over to Benny.

Here, you can sleep on the couch tonight

And stay as long as you like.

We never pay the rent anyway,

So you can stay for free…

Ummm…

Have you seen a doctor about…

Well…

Dari

The baby? Yeah, I have. Due in four months…

Are you sure you want to deal with me…

I mean…pregnant fifteen year olds aren't the most

Accepted people in society

Benny

I really don't mind that you're pregnant.

Being accepted isn't much of my concern.

Dari sat down on the couch and Benny picks up a blanket from on top of one of the boxes. He hands it to her.

Dari

Thanks

And goodnight

Benny

Benny kisses Dari softly on the cheek.

Sleep tight

The lights black out and when they come on again Benny is gone from the room and Dari is standing in the middle of it. Some of the boxes have been moved around, and 'Dari' in bold letters has been written on a few of them. The coffee cups are gone from the table, and there is a Christmas tree in the corner.

Dari

Anna walks into the room from offstage wearing red and black plaid, old flannel pants and a green tank top that says "Apparently YOU told Santa Clause you were good this year. He died

laughing." Dari smiles and hugs Anna who promptly pushes her away and fishes a present out from under the tree. Dari pulls it away and stuffs it back under the tree.

No presents until everybody is awake!!

Anna

Then wake the little motherfuckers up!! I want to open my presents!!

Dari

You remind me of myself when I was six, except I wasn't so good at cursing then.

Dari runs off stage and you can hear her talking to someone off stage.

Benny

Dari…. I'm tired! Go away!

Dari

You're sister's going to kill me if I don't get everyone up.

Benny

Anna's not my sister!

Dari

You may as well be siblings, the way you two act.

Benny

Well then… Tell my sister to shut the fuck up and let me sleep. She should stop acting like a six year old every Christmas!!

There's no sound for a moment, and then you hear a splashing sound and a screech. Benny comes out of the wing wearing a white wife beater, and boxers, and is soaking wet, with Dairy giggling and trailing behind him.

Never sick Dari on me again!! She's brutal!!

Anna is laughing hysterically on the other side of the stage and Cory and Sarah walk out of the wings and they're both wearing their pajamas. They're both nineteen, along with Anna. The moment they see Benny standing in the room, soaking wet, they burst out laughing.

Cory

What'd Anna do this time bro?

Benny

Not Anna!! Dari!! She's evil!!

Cory

Dude, she's not evil, she's pregnant.

You didn't plan this out

Before you let her stay here,

Did you?

Benny

I'm starting to regret it…

Dari

Hey!!

Dari hits Benny lightly and then laughs at him when he sticks his tongue out at her.

Anna

If you two are done flirting like schoolgirls can we open THE FUCKING PRESENTS!?

Everyone in the room laughs as Anna runs over to the tree and grabs a present from underneath it. She tosses the small gift to Cory and laughs when it hits him in the head.

Cory

Hey!! Watch it! Do you really want to hurt your twin brother on Christmas, Anna?

Anna

Oh shut up Cory! Open the motherfucking presents. Or else!!

Stand and laugh at me like you will

But it's Christmas still

Stand and tell me I act like I'm nine

But I could care less

Cause I confess

I act like that all of the time

Corey

Like your six, with a dirtier mouth

Call me names call me out

Say to

All

Open the mother fucking presents

Or you're dead

Anna

I just said

Or else.

I didn't elaborate

Corey

True… but an empty threat's

No walk in the park

Dari

More like a walk in the dark

Corey

So next Christmas when you

Wake us up to

All

Open the mother fucking presents

Corey

Forget the or else

All

Or else

Corey

Anna

We'd have to intervene

And not

All

Open the motherfucking presents

Corey

Anna don't be so mean!

Dari

Anna don't treat us like shit

Newsflash

We don't like it one bit

Anna

But it's funny

Dari

Honey!

I'd bet money

You could be funny

Without treating your roommates like shit

All

Which we don't like one bit

Corey

So next time

Think twice

Before you say to

All

Open the motherfucking presents.

Or else

Forget the or else

Keep it to yourself

Anna

Or else?

Corey

Or else!

Everyone in the group laughs and Anna flops down onto the couch and huffs.

Anna

Well if that's how you want it?

Anna looks around.

Did any of you notice the stupidity of that last argument… or was that just me. I mean… saying "or else" definitely doesn't fall under the category of "things that show you that you treat your friends like shit"

Sarah

We were just bored and needed somebody to chastise.

Anna

Corey! Your girlfriend is weird. She uses weird words.

Corey

Anna, just because you don't understand them doesn't mean they're weird.

Anna

Excuuuusse me!! I do so understand the word. But who says chastise these days?? Nobody!!

Sarah

I do

Anna

Exactly

Sarah

Hey!!

Corey

Aaaaanniiieee!! Can you stop harassing my girlfriend?

Anna

Whatever. Now give me a present!!

Corey whines and plops down next to Anna to hand her a small gift which she excitedly begins to open. Everyone is then opening gifts and laughing and joking, and Dari is sitting on an armrest next to Benny. She puts a hand on his shoulder and he looks up at her.

Dari

Say I'll give anything for happiness

Say I'll give everything for love

Well that'd be truth of the matter

This feeling is a gift from above

Say I'll give anything for you

Say I'll do anything to make you smile

Well what you say would be so true

Cuz just for you I'd walk a thousand miles

Say I'll do anything

I bet I would

Say I'll do anything

I bet it's true

Say I'll do anything

I know I could

I would do anything for you

Love at first sight

On that one night

Stranded on the streets of NYC

And then I see

Yes I can see

That love has come to find me

Benny

Say I'll give anything for you

Saying that, yes it would be so true

Dari baby, I'll be with you, forever and on

I'll hold tight to you, my grip is strong

Say I'll do anything

I bet I would

Say I'll do anything

I bet it's true

Say I'll do anything

I know I could

I would do anything for you

Say I'll do anything

Dari

Say I'll do anything

Both

Say I'll do anything

Yes I'll give anything

I would do anything

Yes I could give anything

I would give anything for you

Yes I'd do anything to make you smile

Tell me that, because I know it's true

Just for you I'd walk ten thousand miles

Say that I'll give anything for love

Say that I'll give everything for you

Well that'd be the truth of the matter

I'd give my entire world to you

Benny and Dari kiss and then break apart. The whole stage fades to black.

Act 3

When light returns it is again in the form of a spotlight on a dark stage. Dari is standing under the spotlight. She is wearing all black. She is crying.

Dari

No matter how fast

No matter how far

No matter what's in your past

No matter how hard you wish on a star

No matter how hard you try

No matter how much you cry

No matter what you do

The past will always come back to you

No matter what happens

No matter what you do

No matter how hard you try, how far you fly

It always finds you

So even in this new life

I found for my self

Where I could escape my old strife

Place it high upon the shelf

Even with this new me

I find my past, will always come

No matter how far I try to fly

No matter how fast I run

Everything was perfect

For just a little while

For once I was happy

For just a little while

Everything was perfect

Well, not quite… because you see

If everything was perfect

Cyril would have been here with me

But then, that early morning

That single phone call came

It pulled me into mourning

Almost drove me insane

So even in this new life

I found for my self

Where I could escape my old strife

Place it high upon the shelf

Even with this new me

I find my past, will always come

No matter how far I try to fly

No matter how fast I run

No matter what happens

No matter what you do

No matter how hard you try, how far you fly

The past, it catches up to you

The phone rings and Dari walks over to answer it.

Dari

Hello?

M-Mom?

Yes this is Dari… I… I'm sorry I didn't call you… I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

Mom… I- I'm pregnant mom…

Wha-What?

No, no, I couldn't happen that way

No, no, I don't believe a word of what you say

No, no, don't tell me

Don't tell me it's true

I just can't believe you

I just won't believe you

Don't make me believe you

How could she

Why did she

The lights fade out until there is only a spotlight on Dari. Another spotlight shows up on a woman on the other side of the stage. She is wearing all black formal clothes and no makeup.

Mom

Honey

Honey hear me

It'll all be all right

Dari

Don't tell me that

Don't say it will be fine

Don't say it will fade in time

Mother

You don't know my mind

Mother

Mom

Dari girl,

Quiet down

Your sister's happy in heaven now

Dari

How was she so happy?

As to take her own life

How could you not stop her?

Help her through the strife

Why didn't you stop him?

You know what father could do

You know what he would do

You know what he DID do

To get what he wanted

Mom

Don't talk like that

Dari girl

Don't speak of your father like that

Dari girl

Dari

I'll speak of the prick however I want

Don't tell me what to do mother!

Don't tell me how to speak, Mother!

Don't tell me I'm wrong, Mother

Mom

Dari girl

Dari girl

Calm down my baby

Dari girl

Dari girl

Don't be so stressed

This isn't about

Your father or mother

I thought you should know

That your sister has passed

Dari

When…

When will she be buried?

Mom

She...

She already was

Dari

She left us without me

Mom

You ran away!

Dari

But I knew her best!!

None of you knew her like I did

You just left her to be

None of you saw her how I did

Not that you ever see

Anything

But yourself

Mom

Stop with the lies Dari girl

Dari

Yes say it mother

Say "Be good, Dari girl"

Tell me to be a lady

I won't listen to your pleas

Mom

Fine then Dari girl

Don't come home ever again

Dari

Fine then mother

Don't come crying to your daughter when

Don't come crying when he does the same to you

Goodbye mother

Good luck

Good riddance too

Dari hangs up the phone and sinks to her knees and cries. The spotlight fades and when the light returns Dari is in a graveyard, and Benny is standing in the upper left of the stage. Dari is center and is kneeling before her sister's grave. The set is simple. Dark.

Dari

Cyril you don't know how I cried

You don't know how much

I wished and hoped that she had lied

Cyril, girl, I can't believe that this is goodbye

Cyril girl, tell me it will be all right

Tell me this is the climax, not the start of the fight

Cyril girl, tell me I'll die happy

Tell me I won't die alone, without a soul for company

Cyril girl, you've left me alone in life

But Cyril I don't blame you, I left you with daddy that night

So from heaven, Cyril, give me the strength to live through this strife

And I know if you do, everything will end up all right

Cyril girl, tell me it will be all right

Tell me this is the climax, not the start of the fight

Cyril girl, tell me I'll die happy

Tell me I won't die alone, without a soul for company

Cyril you don't know how I cried

You don't know how much I'd wished and hoped that she had lied

Cyril girl, I can't believe that this is the goodbye

Cyril girl, save me a spot in heaven, in the sky

A small company of people dressed entirely in black move to the edges of the stage and the musical bridge grows more melodic and legato. The company is humming softly.

Dari

Yesterday I was home

Yesterday I wasn't on my own

Yesterday, home was that awful place

But now I cannot find home anyplace

And yesterday, you stood by my side

And yesterday, you held me, as I softly, cried

Yesterday is the past, and in the past it stays

And so I'm left without you, for all that is left of my days

Yesterday, you were here

Held me close, I needed you near

Yesterday it seems, I'd lost my way

Thank goodness yesterday is not today

Yes thank goodness yesterday is not today

Yesterday I was a shell, a carapace of my old self

And late last night I laid that me away upon a shelf

Yesterday, you were alive, yesterday you loved me

And today I stand in sadness, as you watch from heaven above me

Yesterday, was good and bad, yesterday is the past

Yesterday's page in the story book, it cannot be the last

Yesterday is the end of the chapter, but still there is today

After every sleepless night, arrives another day

Yesterday, you were here

Held me close, I needed you near

Yesterday it seems, I'd lost my way

Thank goodness yesterday is not today

But I can't help but wish, I'd not left you yesterday

I can't help but wish I'd made you come with me

Can't help but wished, I'd tried and tried, just tried to make you see

Company

You cannot dwell on yesterday, yesterday is for fools

You can't dwell on people and how they maneuvered you like tools

Yesterday is that past, and in the past it shall stay

For after every sleepless night, arrives a shining day

And after every sleepless night, arrives a new today

And after every sleepless night, the sun comes up to say

How can you dwell on yesterday, when you can live right here?

Remember Cyril, but find someone new to hold you near

You shouldn't dwell on yesterday, when the time, is not the past

Yesterday's page in the story book is surely not the last

Dari

Live flitting, quick in the moment, because time can move so fast

Remember that life is the here and now, and isn't in the past

Yesterday's page in the story book is surely not the last

Benny starts to stride over to her but then thinks twice and lets her kneel there, looking at the grave for a few moments before she stands up and walks over to Benny. He wraps his arms around her and they walk off of the stage together. The stage lights fade out. When the light returns Dari is alone in the spotlight on a dark stage.

Dari

Say I'm not alone

Say I'm not on my own

Really that's the truth of the matter

Benny walks out onto the stage and holds her close to him as she sings

Because I have you

Say I'm not alone

Say I'm not on my own

Without her here

It's hard to believe that's true

Now I feel so alone

I feel like I'm on my own

Without her here

I'm lost in my solitude

I'd say I'm so alone

But I know I'm not on my own

I know you are here for me

But it's so hard to believe

Benny

Dari girl

Dari girl

I'm here for you

Dari girl

Dari girl

Believe me, it's true

Dari girl

Dari girl

I'll stand by your side

Dari girl

Dari girl

Baby it will be all right

Dari

I'd say that I'm alone

But I know I'm not on my own

You're here with me

I can believe you're here

Benny baby

Both

Baby it will be fine

Baby it will get better in time

Baby just be mine

The Curtain Closes- End of Act One.

Act II

The curtain opens and Dari is sitting with Benny on the bench. She begins staring at the sky, but every so often she shoots looks of wistfulness at the children playing in the park near them. Benny is stroking her hair.

Benny

What's wrong Dari?

Dari

When did I say anything was wrong?

Benny

You didn't need to say anything. I can tell.

Dari

That's great for you, isn't it?

Dari stops speaking and continues staring at the sky, but Benny's hand comes to her cheek.

Benny

Don't change the subject.

Dari

I did not change the subject.

Benny

Right. Sure you didn't.

Dari glares at him.

What's wrong Dari?

Dari

By baby died Benny, that's what's wrong.

Benny

Dari… That happened months ago. You need to let go of that.

Dari

I know… And I keep trying, but I see her in my mind. She's one of those little girls, running and laughing, and playing in the sun. And then I come to my senses and I realize it's not her, and I can't stand those children. Because not one of them is mine…

Benny

Dari… Baby…

He puts a hand on her cheek, but she doesn't seem to notice, and he puts the hand back down onto her shoulder.

Dari

I'm watching the clouds fly by

I'm watching the clear blue sky

I can't stand the peace, the tranquility of life

When my own is in upheaval, in denial, scarred from strife

I'm watching the toddlers play

I'm sitting in the sun today

I can't stand the blissfulness, so unaware and pure

Not knowing of the terrors, that no joys can ever cure

The children are put under a spotlight, and one child is illuminated more than the others. She is small, only about six or so, and she has similar features to Dari. She is playing and laughing and beautiful.

I'm remembering, and knowing, I could be watching a child

She could be smiling and gorgeous and wild

But she was snatched away from me

Before she could be wild and free

I'm sitting, watching child's play

Sitting in the warm midday

I can't stand the joy, so beautiful and wild

That reminds me, of a smiling gorgeous child

I'm watching the sun shine bright

And I'm basking in the golden light

And I can feel tears, behind my eye

But I keep them prisoner, I just won't cry

I'm remembering, that I could have been watching a child

She could be smiling and gorgeous and wild

And she seems lovely, wild and free

I can't stand to have her see

I can't stand to have her see

Even a single tear from me

I won't break her joyful life

With worry, sadness, strife

But she's just a memory

That child, so, so gorgeous and free

She can't be real

She's too tranquil and surreal

So I'm staring with contempt

In a hazardous attempt

Hoping she will disappear

I never want to hear

Her laughter again

Her sweet voice again

I want her to leave

Just leave me be

She's just a dream

A waking nightmare

Just a day scare

That ends in a scream

She's just a dream

So why can't I make her leave me?

The children playing fade out, though they are still a little visible. They are silent now, and the stage is darker.

I'm watching the clouds fly by

And each one, is her face in the sky

I can't stand the peace, the tranquility of life

When my own is in upheaval, in denial, scarred from strife

Benny doesn't say anything, he just pulls her closer to him. The lights fade down, and Dari looks up to him.

Dari

Whoa, Mr. Curiosity. I thought I'd have been bombarded you with questions by now… You're awfully quiet about what happened after Cyril died.

Benny looks away, and then back to Dari.

Benny

I don't know… I just don't think I should ask you about what happened after. I don't want to hit a sore spot…

Dari

Dari chuckles softly.

Benny, if you were trying to avoid sore spots today, you kind of failed. I think you hit about twenty already.

Benny

I don't want you to be hurt anymore than you already are. I can't stand to see you hurt.

Dari

But I like storytelling… Even if it's just telling you about my life…. And you deserve to know everything.

Benny

How much more can everything be…. I was there with you after Cyril's death. What more is there that I don't know?

Dari

A lot actually… You may have been a part of my life, but you didn't live it for me. There will always be things you don't know or understand. But I think you deserve to know whatever I can tell you.

I've been hiding all my life

In my gilded cage

Spending my days, drowning in strife

And trying not to fill my mind with rage

I've been sitting, my life long

Upon the rock hard earth

Never did I look too strong

But I had to be strong

To live after birth

I've been hiding as long as I know

I've been holding fast

But now I learned my legs are strong

I can run from the past

So recently I've run from strife

Sprinted out of reach

I've escaped my old life

To live on this sunny beach

But I didn't remember just one thing

The past can outrun me

So I'm still going to end up caught

Though now I'm running free

You can see the company gathering in the shadows.

Because

No matter how fast

No matter how far

No matter how hard you try

All

No matter what you do

The past will always come back to you

No matter what happens

No matter what you do

No matter how hard you try, how far you fly

It always finds you

Dari

So even after mother left

More was still to come

When finally daddy found me

Oh, I thought my life was done

The scene changes to the loft, and Benny is pulled offstage. Dari Is pulled to the back of the crowd for a moment. The company surrounds Dari, who is standing in the front stage right and her belly has returned to a pregnant state.

So even in this new life

I found for my self

Where I could escape my old strife

Place it high upon the shelf

Even with this new me

I find my past, will always come

No matter how far I try to fly

No matter how fast I run

All

No matter how fast,

No matter how far you run

The past will always come

And strike you dumb

The company does not exit, but crowds into the darker corners of the room, as if they are pieces of furniture themselves. The Lights fade into the loft scene and Dari looks around the stage. She freezes when she sees her father on the couch in the living room.

Dad

My pretty little Dari girl. I've found you at last.

He chuckles softly and Dari backs away from him.

But what's this. Has my whore been sleeping around!? Got yourself pregnant before I could get back to you!!

Dari

Shut up. You'd be happy to know it's your baby!!

She wraps her arms around the swollen belly and steps back again. Her father steps towards her.

Don't come near me, you prick!!

Dad

That abomination of a child couldn't be mine!!

Dari

Right, though. You don't deserve to be called its father!!

Dari's father moves towards Dari again and chuckles menacingly.

Dad

You're right. I don't deserve to be a father, so we'll just have to fix this little problem, won't we?

He flicks open a small pocket knife, and walks towards her. He is using the knife more as a threat, that like he is actually going to use it.

Dari

Don't you dare touch her!!

Her father comes closer to her, but Dari grabs his wrist and takes the knife from him. She punches him in the face and pushes him away.

Don't you dare touch my baby girl!

Dad

Dari girl

Dari girl

Listen to me

Dari girl

Dari girl

Listen to your daddy

Dari girl

Dari girl

Daddy knows best

Dari girl

Dari girl

That wasn't a request

Things will be better Dari

Better without that baby

She's just an accident, we must forget

Come home with me Dari, and don't regret

Don't regret that she's gone

Just get the deed done

You'll forget her in time

Meanwhile, be mine

Dari girl

Dari girl

Forget this baby

Dari girl

Dari girl

Be my baby

Dari girl

Dari girl

Come home to daddy

Dari girl

Dari girl

Baby girl be happy

Dari girl

My baby

Dari girl

My pretty girl

Dari girl

Be mine

And in time

Everything will be fine

Dari

You say that you are what I need

You say you think that's who I want to be

That couldn't ever be the truth

I could never want you too

You're no daddy to me

Just and empty nobody

So don't call me your pretty baby,

Don't call me your pretty girl Dari

I've found a life away from

Dari girl

Dari girl

Dad

Dari girl

Dari girl

Dari

I learned how to escape from

Dari girl

Dari girl

Dad

Dari girl

Baby girl

Company

Dari girl

Dari girl

Leave your father Dari girl

Just get on with your life

Leave him behind with the past and the strife

Make him leave you alone

Make him go home

Dari girl

Dari girl

Leave your father Dari girl

Leave him

Leave him behind you

Leave him

Forever behind you

Leave him

Don't let him bind you

And bring you back to his home

Dari

So just go on with your life

Forget me, just leave me alone

I'd rather be on my own

That back where I once called home

Dad

Dari girl

My Dari girl

My pretty little baby girl

Mother and father need you home

Dari

Just leave me alone!

That place is not my home!

The two stare at each other for moments before her father stands up strait and looks at her for a moment.

Dad

Don't bother ever coming home

Dari

Don't worry, I won't

Dari's father walks out into the wing and Dari is standing center stage. She looks out at the audience and the lights fade out. When the lights fade back in, Dari is standing in the center of the graveyard scene, but she is no longer pregnant. There is a small, baby sized grave situated right next to Cyril's.

Dari

I thought everything was done for me

I thought my problems had finally gone

I thought

But I thought wrong

Nothing I did,

They told me,

I didn't do anything wrong

Well then how could this have happened?

Well then why has this happened?

Well then why just two months after birth,

Did I hold my dead child in my arms?

How is it she's dead, if you say "No she wasn't harmed?"

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. That's how.

I thought everything was done for me

Mother, father, my past… It's all gone

I thought

But I thought wrong

I thought it was over

My past was all gone

I thought

I thought

I thought

But I thought wrong

Cyril kneels before the two graves

Cyril you don't know how I cried

But maybe you saw when my baby girl died

Cyril, girl, this second time I'm saying goodbye

Saying goodbye, and I'm looking to the sky

Cyril, Did you save a place for me in heaven?

Even though it's something I never really believed in.

Cyril, girl, my baby girl, she needs protection

Cyril, please keep her safe. My baby girl needs you.

Cyril girl, tell me it will be all right

Tell me this is the climax, not the start of the fight

Cyril girl, tell me my baby died happy

I know that one thing; it means the most to me

Cyril you don't know how I cried

Unless you saw me when my baby girl died

Cyril, did you save me a spot in the sky?

Cyril, give my baby girl, that place in line

Cyril, watch my baby girl in the sky

The light on the stage fades and the music continues. A spotlight appears on the stage and Benny is lit up. He's wearing all black, nice but not formal clothing. He's looking over to Dari, who is kneeling, bent over and crying under a dim spotlight.

Benny

Baby, Dari baby

Baby don't cry

Dari baby smile for me

Dari baby smile

I've watched you go through so much

I've watched you for so long

I know you can be happy Dari

I hope I'm not wrong

Baby, Dari baby

Baby don't cry

Dari baby smile for me

Dari baby smile

I hate to see you crying

Sobbing all alone

I just wanted you to know

You aren't on your own

Dari

So, so lost

So, so alone

I can't see that light

They say that light could lead me home

So, so cold

So, so alone

Sitting, lying helplessly

I'm frozen to the bone

Benny

Dari baby

Dari baby

You're not on your own

Dari baby

Dari baby

You're not all alone

Dari baby

Dari baby

I'm here for you

Dari baby

Dari baby

Dari girl, it's true

Dari

So, so cold

So, so alone

So, so lost

So shaken to the bone

Somebody told me

That light could lead me home

But I can't find that light

And I've found myself alone

So, so cold

So, so alone

So, so lost

So shaken to the bone

So, so cold

So, so alone

So, so lost

So far away from home

Benny

Dari baby

Dari baby

You're not on your own

Dari baby

Dari baby

You're not all alone

Dari baby

Dari baby

Dari girl, it's true

Dari baby

Dari baby

I'm here for you

Dari baby

Dari

So alone

Benny

Dari baby

Dari

On my own

Benny

Dari baby

Dari

Far from home

Benny

Dari baby

Dari

Cold to the bone

Benny

Dari baby

I'll protect you

Dari baby

It's so true

Dari baby

Benny holds out his hand to Dari

Take my hand

Dari I will help you stand

Dari baby

Dari baby

I'll protect you

Dari takes his hand and he helps her stand. They embrace and Dari cries in his arms. The lights fade out. When the lights return Dari and Benny are sitting on the park bench from the first scene. Benny is dressed in a black shirt and light jeans. Dari has her head on Benny's shoulder. Benny looks down to her.

Everyone says Dari girl is helpless

Because… I just seem weaker than the rest

Tell me, wouldn't you look helpless

If you carried a load, backbreaking, at best

Everyone says I'm so weak

And everyone says I can't survive

And though, before, my future looked so bleak

Bleaker was my past, and still today I am alive

Everyone says to me these things

Maybe not true. Maybe not right

But still they say these things

Till they've become stale and trite

Everyone says, that I can't survive

Everyone says, that I'm not strong

They say "Not long before I'm not alive"

But I know, I know, I know, I know they're wrong

Dari girl

Dari girl is helpless

It's true

They never say it to my face

But I still hear them say it to you

They never say it to my face

But I'm not deaf, I hear it too

Everyone says I'm helpless

Because I seem weaker than the rest

Tell me, wouldn't you look helpless

Carrying a load, backbreaking at best

Everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

Maybe they're right, I can't really say

Maybe that saying isn't worth a dime

Or maybe I'm less helpless than I was the other day

Everyone says, I can't survive

Everyone says that I'm not strong

They say "not too long, before I'm not alive

Both

But I know… I know, that they are wrong

They are wrong

The lights fade in and out and Benny is wearing a white shirt now. Dari never looks at Benny during this scene.

Dari

You made promises to stay there with me,

You said you'd always be there

And now I'm alone, and I can't see

Why fate would tear you so roughly away from me

You were my edifice

You were my soul

You supported me

And kept me whole

But fate must have thought that I

Needed just one more test

She must have thought I needed

To be ten times more depressed

Maybe she made it a game

In that sick and twisted way

Will the girl with the fucked up life survive,

If we take her livelihood away

You were my edifice

You were my soul

You supported me

And kept me whole

Maybe I passed her test,

I mean… I didn't die

But I would have failed every test in the world

To see you alive

You were my guardian

And for ever you shall be

Now you're my guardian angel

I know you're with me

You are my edifice

You are my soul

You always support me

And you keep me whole

You were my guard, and now my guardian

And forever you shall be

You are forever my protector

And I can feel you here with me

Benny's hand wraps around her waist, and she shivers.

I can feel you here with me

The lights fade out again, and when they return, Dari is standing in the grave yard, and her eyes are red with tears. She has a dark red rose clutched in her hand, and she kneels before a third grave. It is Benny's grave. She lays the rose down at his grave and then reaches out to touch his grave. She drifts off and has a wistful smile on her face. Then her hand and her smile fall, and she begins singing.

Dari

He said I was alone on that New York City street

That all I had was a duffle bag for company

But he forgot one detail that denies that saying's power

He was there, standing right beside me

So I was not alone, on that chilly night in December

I had Benny there to talk to me

That one fact is not so difficult to remember

That Benny, he was there for company

So who I had with me

On that New York City night

Who I had for company,

Changed my life

Benny is dressed all in white and he appears behind her. He places a hand on her shoulder and her eyes widen for a second. She shows she can feel, but not see him.

So if I'd been alone

If he'd just passed me by

And my bag was all my company,

None of this could have happened to me

And my memoir would not be this stunning tale

What we have for company changes our lives

Be it sisters, daughters

Mother's, Father's

Duffel bags

Or guys

What we have for company can change our lives

So I was not alone, on that chilly New York night

I had Benny standing right beside me

Having him right there, and then, changed my life

The only thing I can thank fate for, is bringing him to me

I can thank her, for giving me his company

The lights fade out and Dari is back in the park scene. She is lying down with her head in Benny's lap, but she does not know he's there. Two other figures walk out dressed all in white as well; Cyril and the little girl from the park. Cyril is guiding the little girl.

Dari

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

Everybody say's "they lose their way"

Whoever's story told them that, they've never heard mine

How I learned to stand throughout my day

Everybody says this

Everybody says that

Everybody says "the good die young"

Everybody says this

But I have got this feeling

I know that my life has just begun

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

"Before the end, they drown among their tears"

Whoever's story told them that, they've never heard mine

I passed them all, surpassed them all by years

I've lived so many years

I've lived through so much tyranny

I've brushed away my tears

But now I've got no soul for company

I've lived throughout my life

I've seen just too much irony

I've survived, just too much strife

Now I have no soul for company

Benny

Maybe I'm not here in the flesh

But Dari, you have got to believe

That even though, my body, has been laid to rest

My soul will cling to you for company

Cyril, Girl, and Benny

Dari girl you need to believe us

Even though, were gone and can't be seen

Dari girl, we know that you can feel us

Forever, we will be your company

Dari

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

"Before the end, they drown among their tears"

Whoever's story told them that, they've never heard mine

I passed them all, surpassed them all by years

Girl

Mommy, please believe you aren't helpless

You're the strongest person I have ever known

Mommy, I am sorry, I caused, so much emptiness

I didn't mean to die, and leave you there alone

Trust me, if I could have the chance to live, I would take it

Dari

Everyone says Dari girl is helpless

Because… I just seem weaker than the rest

Tell me, wouldn't you look helpless

If you carried a load, backbreaking, at best

Everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

Maybe they're right, I can't really say

Maybe that saying isn't worth a dime

Or maybe I'm less helpless than I was the other day

Cyril

Trust me, Dari, sis, you aren't weak

You're the strongest person I know

Forever, there's a steady leak

Of your strength, it's a gorgeous glow

Dari

Cyril was oh so much stronger than me

She held me, and comforted me when I cried

I felt like my strength had been cut in half

When I learned how she had died

Cyril

Dari will tell you, that I was so much stronger

Dari will tell you I'm the reason she survived

But Dari hasn't told you that, when I was faced with her struggle

When I was faced with her struggle, by my own hand I died

Dari taught me everything

Dari stood her ground

Dari was my angel

She stood strong, and tall, and proud

Dari held through everything

But I… I just gave up

Dari learned to fly away

But me, I just got stuck

Cyril, Benny, and Girl

Dari stood tall

Stood proud

Stood strong

Dari took her hits

Lasted always

Lasted long

Dari helped us fly

Never left

Us to fall

Dari stood proud

Stood strong

Stood tall

Cyril

Dari will tell you, that I was so much stronger

Dari will tell you I'm the reason she survived

But Dari hasn't told you that, when I was faced with struggle

When I was faced with struggle, by my own hand I died

Dari flew from her troubles

Dari learned to fly

Dari faced her struggle

Then she left me lone to die

But I don't regret it

She did what she must

Because both of us were silver

And I chose to lay and rust

No I don't regret it

She did what she must

She polished her silver to let it gleam

I laid and let mine rust

All, but Dari

Everyone says "Dari was the smallest of them all"

Everyone said "goner. She won't survive"

"The tiniest girl, who would reach the sky and fall"

Cyril

But, it was me, who didn't come out alive

All But Dari

Dari stood tall

Stood proud

Stood strong

Dari took her hits

Lasted Always

Lasted Long

Dari held us close

Taught us

Never to fall

And Dari stood proud

Stood strong

Stood tall

Cyril

Everyone says "Helpless never reach the end of life"

They were right, just take a look at me

Dari says that she'd deny it, she stood through her strife

But she's not helpless. That, I know I see.

Everyone says "helpless never reach the end of time"

"Before the end they drown among their tears"

If you want, some proof, a story, take a look at mine

I left my life, I rusted in my fears

All but Dari

Everyone says helpless never reach the end of life

Maybe, they are right, it's hard to see

But Dari isn't helpless; she stood strong, throughout the strife

Dari was my angel, she was strong for me

Dari

Everyone says, I can't survive

Everyone says that I'm not strong

They say "not too long, before I'm not alive

All

But I know… I know, that they are wrong

They are wrong

So everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

That statement doesn't mean too much to me

It's just a way of saying that most all of us will die

A pessimistic, pointless prophecy

Dari

Everybody says this

Cyril+Girl

And everybody says that

Benny+Girl

But what is it, that any of this must mean?

All

Everybody says that

But let's just not listen

To what everybody says

It's probably not true

It's probably not true

The lights dim, and the girl returns to the playground, and continues playing. She is alone, and wearing a white sundress. A man (Dari's father) then appears in the corner of the stage where the playground is, and he is in the back, watching her.

Girl

Daddy's girl

I am my daddy's girl

Nobody says it to my face

But I know it's true

Daddy's girl

Daddy's girl

I'm my daddy's girl

And I hate that it is true

Daddy's girl

I am my daddy's girl

Nobody tells me that

But I will say it to you

Because I'm daddy's little Dari girl

Daddy's little baby girl

But I will keep denying it, even though it's true

The lights fade out and they get a little bit brighter where the other three are. They are looking at the little girl.

Cyril and Benny

Just look at you

Even as a little girl you were strong

And Dari, we are sure that you will live long

And we will always be here with you

We will always be near to you

Dari, just believe that you

Know that you are strong

As Dari is singing the entire company comes onto the stage, gathering in shadows. Children return to the playground slowly.

Dari

Some people say that helpless never reach the end of time

They will say that helpless ones will drown among their tears

I could care less if that was right or wrong

I just know, that I'm not helpless, I'm not consumed by all my fears

I could care less if helpless are blown to the wind

I could care less if that was wrong or right

I could care less if that statement meant a thing

All I know is I'm not helpless, I'll survive my days and nights

All

So everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

Let them say what they want to say but don't say it to me

Everyone says helpless aren't the last ones left alive

And I'll just throw that saying to the breeze

Benny, Cyril, and Girl

Everybody says this

Everybody says that

Everybody says the good die young

Everybody says that

But now Dari knows

Dari

I know that my life has just begun

All

So everyone says helpless never reach the end of time

That statement doesn't mean too much to me

It's just a way of saying that most all of us will die

A pessimistic, pointless prophecy

Everybody tells me that the good die young

But I know that my Life has just begun

The End
