Hallucinatory

You are smiling -- such an
unbearably sweet smile;
but it just. doesn't. quite
reach your eyes.

I am making a face
somewhere between sour and shocked --
trying to conceal the things
that we both know
but refuse to admit.

My ignorance and innocence and
pure-heartedness are a now-brittle syrup,
too-thickly coating my face -- ready
to break; underneath, my eyes are
glossy and green.

But your arms are open,
and you hold in your palms sparkling phrases --
They are full of candy-promises,
pretty words and lies.

That doesn't change that
my sugared heart is still
melting for you;
I close my eyes and hope.

my hands eager, I reach --
my fingers close on nothing.
