Sweet Alchemy

A clumsy, straggly plant with too-heavy leaves,

Sour and bitter,

hiding in the corner of the garden.

A woman's hand.

Gently plucking the stems.

Steeping them in pure white sugar

for a day and a night.

Bubbles in a gleaming silver pot.

Jam pots.

A treasure trove of coral-pink sweetness.

An explosion of sweet/tart/spicy flavor

on her tongue.

She holds up a spoonful to the sunlight:

shimmering, sparkling, shining

edible jewels.
