Disclaimer: I don't own the song "So Long, Goodbye" by Sum 41. It's just perfect for the idea of my best friend leaving for college and never returning.

Time passes by, direction unknown,

You've left us now, but we're not alone.

"I wish she was here with us now," Amy said, staring up at the stars, laying on her back on the dock.

"Yeah, but she had to get on with her life. Not all things last forever," her friend Catherine replied, stars reflecting on tears in her eyes.

"But her friendship was one of the things that should have lasted forever."

"The friendship isn't over, its just long distance now."

Amy sighed. "Yeah, you're right." She blinked, holding her eyes closed for a moment to see her best friend's face in her mind. Kyra had always been there, but the time came for college and she was on the first train out of town without once looking back. Amy and Catherine, her two closest friends through high school, never heard from her anymore. There would be the occasional missed phone call or late-night text, but the two girls hardly talked to their best friend once she was gone.

Before you know it, your cup's overflown,

You measure no one that I've ever known.

Amy heard her voice in her head. She sat with her eyes closed and watched the scene play out in her mind.

"I'm sorry, guys, but I have to do this. I've waited all my life for this chance, I'm not going to let it slip away."

"It's okay Kyra, we understand." She hugged her best friend, her sister, before stepping back with tears in her eyes.

And it's quite alright,

And goodbye for now,

"Just remember that I'm still watching the same stars as you every night. Who knows, maybe someday we'll watch them together again. Never forget our friendship, and never lose yourself in life, either. I'll think about you guys every night."

Just look up to the stars,

And believe who you are,

"Goodbye, Kyra," Amy choked on her own tears as her lifelong friend drove away.

'Cause it's quite alright,

And so long, goodbye.

We always knew that it'd come to this,

It's times like these I forget what I miss.

"Amy?" Kyra said into the receiver.

"Kyra!" she called back in response. "Is that really you?"

"Yeah! How have you been?"

"Same old. You?"

"Good. I'll be home for winter break, if you want to go tell Catherine."

"Really!" Amy jumped up to go text her friend about the news.

"So, I just wanted to let you know that. I'veā€¦got to go. Talk to you soon," Kyra said, then waited a few seconds and clicked the 'off' button on her cell phone.

Amy stared at the dead line before shutting of her own phone and dropping it to the floor.

One Week Later

Matters of heart are hard to address,

Especially when yours is full of emptiness.

Sry, I cant come this winter. Something came up. ttyl.

K

Amy stared at the offending message. Tears of rage and hurt filled her eyes as she chucked her cell across the room. She suck to the floor, sobs wracking her body.

And it's quite alright,

And goodbye for now,

Amy looked through her tear-blurred eyes at the moon and stars.

"Are you still watching the same stars as us, Kyra? Or have you forgotten?"

Just look up to the stars,

And believe who you are,

'Cause it's quite alright,

And so long, goodbye.

Time passes by, direction unknown,

You've left us now, but we're not alone.

Catherine and Amy laid side bye side on the dock, staring at the stars Kyra had told them to keep watching three years prior to that moment. Tears sparkled in each girl's eyes.

Before you know it, your cup's overflown,

You measure no one that I've ever known.

"Is she ever coming back?"

"I don't know anymore," Amy sighed. "I wish she would."

"Wish she would what?"

Amy and Catherine sat upright so fast you couldn't see them move. In seconds, Kyra was being smothered with hugs by both of them.

"Miss me?"

"You betcha!" the two said in unison.

"How long are you here for?" Catherine dared break the moment of awkward, hugging silence.

"Are you back for good?" Amy asked hopefully. Kyra took a step back from them, eyes cast down.

"I have to go back at the end of this week," she said quietly.

And it's quite alright,

And goodbye for now,

Just look up to the stars,

And believe who you are,

'Cause it's quite alright,

"Oh."

"But I can watch the same stars you've been watching with you one more time." Catherine smiled through her tears. Amy just nodded.

"I still love you like a sister, Amy. Nothing's changed." Amy smiled tearfully, hugging her lifelong friend and sister. The three sat down to watch the stars looking down upon them.

Three Days Later

Just look up to the stars,

And believe who you are,

'Cause it's quite alright,

"Amy, it's gonna be okay," Catherine comforted her. Amy shook her head and clung to Kyra.

"Don't leave again. You might never come back this time." Kyra wriggled out of her grip.

"Just keep watching the stars for me. I'll be back sooner or later."

Amy's body shook with silent sobs as her best friend's car drove away again, leaving her powerless and alone as she looked up to the night sky they had parted under.

And so long, goodbye.

a/n: Meaningless angst and sadness. Basically, Amy is me and Kyra is my best friend, who has already told me that when it's time for college, she's gone and never coming back. I just hope she doesn't come back just to leave again. I can only stand the heartbreak of losing my sister once.
