From Light to Darkness

Hi, I'm FairyofEarth88. After doing a few stories on , I decided to come here and post my original stories here. So, without further wait, let's start the story.

Prologue: Kate's Thoughts

Have you ever been at a moment in your life where you think everything is perfect? Try to imagine that for just a second. It feels great, right? But then you feel like something is missing.

That's how I feel right now. I've got friends, good grades, some degree of popularity, but then...there's a hole. You try to find out what caused it, and then you spend so much time trying to fill it. I tried to fill it, but I then came to realize that I alone could not fill this void.

But what if someone else could? What if this person was everything you weren't? But this person somehow had everything you wanted. Everything you needed. This person completed you. You would do anything for them. Anything.

In my case...anything was somehow beyond what I had originally thought.

My name is Kate Brown, and this my journey...from light to darkness.

Chapter One: So Long Summer

"Okay everyone, say cheese!" The four of us smiled and the camera flashed.

"Thanks Brent," I said taking back my camera.

"No problem Kate," he said going back up to the lighthouse. School was tomorrow and my friends and I wanted to get some last minute summer memories to put in our scrapbooks.

"I like this one," said Brenda pointing to a picture of us standing on the rocky cliffs near the water.

"That one's cuter," said Lorraine pointing to a picture of us at the beach.

"That one's my favorite," said Cassie picking up a picture of us on the pier.

"Anyone want anything to eat?" Lorraine asked getting up to go into the Lobster Shack.

"No thanks," I said. "I can't eat anymore fried clams."

"Same here," said Brenda.

"I've had enough lobster," said Cassie patting her stomach as if something was growing inside it.

"Okay," said Lorraine. "I'm going to the bathroom then."

This past summer had been very busy for the four of us, especially since we were finally going to be seniors! Yeah! We spent our summer at the beach, going to parties, and going water skiing on the lake with Brenda's dad. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I should probably introduce them...

I'll start with Brenda Joo. Her family is Korean, and her parents are currently living separately. Brenda is less than five feet tall, she has long black hair, and sometimes wears glasses. At school she was our class treasurer, and second chair, clarinet. History is her best subject. You can ask her almost anything about any country and she'll tell you all about it. Lucky for her, she's an only child, but her parents are hard on her. She is one of the funniest people I've ever met, and I've known her since the fourth grade.

Then there's Cassie Smith. She's a bit quiet, sort of bookish with light brown hair and blue eyes. Usually you'll find her in the library reading something from last century. Her favorite play is Midsummer Night's dream, and she is constantly writing stories and plays. Did I also mention her parents are into motorcycles? You'd never guess it looking at her. She is so girly compared to her two sisters. Cassie and I have been best friends since the second grade.

Last but not least, there's Lorraine Pinkerton. She's loud and crazy and we've been friends the longest. Since kindergarten, in fact. She has flaming red hair, freckles and blue eyes. She is constantly changing her hair. Last year she had ruby red hair, and this year it's bright orange with yellow and blonde pieces. Lorraine is constantly taking pictures or drawing new ones. She's very artsy. She has a tangerine colored laptop at her house, and she makes digital art pieces and puts them on the Internet.

Did I mention she's also a vegetarian? She refuses to go into a KFC because of how cruel they treat their chickens. That video scared the crap out of me. I couldn't eat chicken for a month after that. With all things put aside, I couldn't ask for a better friend than Lorraine. If something were wrong, she'd be the first to know. And then she'll do everything in her power to make everything right again.

A few minutes later Lorraine came back with a chocolate ice cream.

"So is anyone nervous for tomorrow?" she asked.

"Oh, I'm so nervous," said Cassie. "All of those college applications are going to be so much work! I have no idea which school I want to go to."

"My dad wants me to go to Harvard," said Brenda. "I want to go to Dartmouth." I would suggest to her to tell her father, but she won't do it. Her father is way to strict for his own good.

"I'm already looking at several schools in New York," said Lorraine. "I really want to go to Parson's."

"Cool," said Brenda. "What about you Kate?"

"Oh, I don't know...I've been looking around the state. Orono doesn't sound bad. I liked the schools they had in New Hampshire too, but they're so expensive."

To be honest, I really had no idea what I was going to do in college. My grades were average; I wasn't super creative, athletic or musical. The only talent that I have is acting. But maybe it would be the one thing that would help me. And my parents would love me no matter what I went to school for.

The sun was starting to go down and we knew that summer was coming to an end. So, the four of us got into Cassie's Toyota Camry and drove off into town. Already everything was looking different here in Bristol, Maine. Next year we would all be leaving this place behind and moving to the next chapter of our lives. Until then, life would go on as usual.

Cassie stopped on the corner in front of Bristol High School.

"I can't believe we're going back there tomorrow," said Lorraine.

"Yeah I know," said Brenda. "Where did the summer go?" I looked out the window and stared at the large brick building. Then I saw a shadow run past the building.

"What was that?"

"What?" Lorraine asked.

"I thought I saw something run by."

"Wow Kate, you must be pretty tired that you're hallucinating." I opened the door and got out of the car.

"Where are you going?" Brenda asked.

"I'm going to go see what it is," I said as I started walking towards the school.

"Kate, I have to be home in twenty minutes!"

"You'll make it, Cassie," I said. Cassie sighed and before I knew it, all four of us were walking towards the school. The trees that led up to the front of the school appeared eerie, something I usually didn't think of when I was here. I've been inside the school plenty of times at night, but usually there's a bigger group of us.

Soon we got to the front door and looked through the glass window. I could see the receptionist's desk. Tomorrow Mrs. Lary would be sitting there, peering at all of us through her thick black-framed glasses.

"It's probably locked," said Cassie. "I think we should go back." I pushed the handle, and she was right...it was locked.

"We could try the other doors instead," said Brenda. "Let's try the cafeteria door." Cassie wasn't going along with us, but the rest of us were game. We ran around to the back of the building and across the campus. The gym, auto shop and library were located on different parts of the school campus, but we weren't worried about going into any of those buildings until tomorrow. Lorraine reached for the back door and to our surprise...it was unlocked.

"Are you sure this is a good idea, Kate?" I had no answer for her. I went in, followed by Brenda, Lorraine, and a rather reluctant Cassie.

"It's so creepy at night," Brenda whispered as we walked across the cafeteria. All the tables were folded up against the wall, and nothing was in the middle of the room except for the clean white tiles that were reflected off the moonlight from the skylights above. A loud bang echoed throughout the building.

"What was that?" Cassie asked timidly. Lorraine and Brenda looked fearful, but to be honest, I wasn't afraid.

"It's probably nothing," I said. "Let's go this way."

"But isn't that were the sound came from?" Cassie asked.

"Maybe we should go investigate," said Brenda.

"It's probably just one of the janitors anyways," I said shrugging. We exited the cafeteria and slowly crept down the hall past the various bulletin boards that were covered in flyers mostly for the new freshmen. The orange lockers that followed looked different in the dark, like an eerie faded gray.

We turned the corner to the left and out into the center of the school. It was nothing but a large room with staircases and open hallways leading to other parts of the school.

Another loud bang was heard.

"It's this way," I said pointing to the staircase. "I can hear it from upstairs." I started running up the stairs, and soon my friends followed me, very confused as to what had gotten into me. I didn't even know what had gotten into me, except that I was looking for danger tonight. The second floor appeared normal.

All the doors were locked, and everything was quiet. I heard the sound of a door open and close loudly. I turned around and ran to the other end of the hallway.

"Kate! Come back!" Lorraine ran after me, but I didn't care if Brenda or Cassie came with us. Cassie was too scared to go any further. Soon I saw a light coming from the science lab. I ran to the door and before I put my hand on the knob, I felt something grab me.

"Kate, stop. Do you even know what you're doing?" Lorraine stared at me through cold blue eyes.

"I'm just curious," I said. "But if you don't want to go in, you don't have to."

"Fine. Go in. But come back afterwards. Cassie is freaking out right now."

"It'll just be a minute." Lorraine waited by the water fountain and watched as I placed my hand on the doorknob. I hesitated.

"What now?" she asked.

"I can't go in alone," I said. She chuckled.

"Okay, let's do it together." We both reached for the doorknob and opened the door. The science lab was as it usually was: black countertops everywhere, a chalkboard at the front, and a guy laying on the ground...wait...what?

We ran over to the body. It was Jim Hardy, the janitor.

"Oh my god, Lorraine, call an ambulance!" Lorraine nodded and pulled out her cell phone.

"Mr. Hardy, are you okay?" I shook him, but he didn't respond. That only meant one thing.

"Oh my god, he's dead," I said under my breath.

"What?" Lorraine ran over and checked him over. Sure enough, I was right. "Kate, look at this."

"What could be interesting? He's dead."

"Just look at his neck." I looked down and there were four holes on his neck. "Whoa...what do you think made that?" I might have an idea as to what made that bite, but I had a feeling nobody would believe me.

"Maybe...it was a vampire?" I said. Lorraine looked at me strangely.

"Uh...try again Kate. I mean really, do you think the police will buy that one?"

"No."

About a minute later the ambulance had arrived and took Mr. Hardy away and sent a crew to sanitize the room. The police questioned all four of us, but none of us could have possibly done it from what they gathered.

"Although I don't approve of trespassing at night, you were right to follow your instincts on this one," the chief told me. "That's why I'm letting you off with a warning. But next time I find any one of you trespassing, I'll have no choice but to take legal action. You are all free to go."

"Thank you," I said with relief.

"Let's go," said Cassie. "I'm already in enough trouble as it is." We piled into her Toyota and she drove off and dropped each one of us at our houses. Although the police had told her parents what happened, she was still freaked out by everything that happened...except she wasn't the one who saw Mr. Hardy lying on the floor dead!

Around ten o'clock I got home to find my mother sitting in the living room. Grace and Joshua, my younger brother and sister were already asleep.

"Kate!" My mother ran up and hugged me. "Are you okay? The police told me everything. I hope you're not traumatized."

"It's okay mom. I'm going to be fine."

"Do you want to talk about it?" I sat down on the couch, and she sat next to me.

"Well, I don't really know what happened. I had a sudden urge to into the school. I guess I knew that something was wrong." She hugged me again.

"You're just like your father. He would've done the same thing." As for my father, he died after Grace was born. He was a pilot in the air force, and his plane had crashed when he was flying over the Pacific Ocean. Then out of nowhere, I began to cry. My mom sat next to me patting my back and comforting me for about twenty minutes before I went upstairs to my room to get ready for bed.

I dreamt that I was running through the school campus that night. Only it was completely empty and it was at night. The sky was black and everything around me was distorted and half melted as I ran past it.

A scream echoed throughout the area, and I immediately knew it was coming from the gym. I ran to the large orange doors and rushed into the gym. There in the middle on top of the school logo in the center of the room was a body. My body. I was pale and all my blood had been drained out of my body. I could see some strange figure standing over me, feeding. The figure stopped and looked up at me with eerie glowing green eyes—

I woke up in a cold sweat on the floor of my room.

"Phew. Thank god it was just a dream," I said softly. I got back up and looked at the clock. It was 3 a.m. 'Three more hours to go,' I thought.

I didn't want to go back to sleep. I was too afraid of what else I might dream of, but somehow I fell back asleep anyways, hoping everything would go right at school tomorrow.

Little did I know, I was in for a one hell of a surprise...

Hope you enjoyed the story so far, I'll post more later. Thanks for reading. :)
