(A/N: Shrek and Innerpartysystem doesn't belong to me.)
I sat behind the microphone stand, thinking. Waiting. My headphones played a guitar solo. I began singing with the song.
The message was lost in the static
She could only love one but
It really wasn't love
I hear falling is the hardest part of love
If no one is there to catch you
Love is a strange thing
She cries and talks to me over the phone
Her heart was broken again
I'm there to mend the broken pieces
But never there to keep it together
I'm moving on, girl
It's time I started moving on
My phone starts vibrating. Another solo. I glance at the screen. It's her. I don't pick up the phone and continue singing a different song. My phone ringed again. "Hello?"
"Hey, we already have the equipment on the stage. All we need is you."
I checked the time. "I'll be there in a few."
My friend says into the microphone, "Are you guys ready?!"
The crowd screams. We play our first song. A cover of "Heart of Fire" by Innerpartysystem.
You remember me from a better time
Infatuation with each other could summarize
All this is tied to the love
The love you had assumed would never die
I can't remember what I had said
Something reminiscent of a relationship
It was easier to lack the truth
Then tell you how I feel
But I will surround your heart with lies until the end
Why? I search the crowd. Then, I see her. She's smiling, watching us. She makes eye contact with me and waves. I quickly turn away towards the other side of the crowd. By the time Cinderella has been turned into a pumpkin, the concert ended with a bunch of stage effects. She met us backstage. "Hey! Why didn't you pick up?" I shrug. "I couldn't hear it." She frowned slightly. "Well, you guys were awesome today." We all nod in recognition. She walked towards the exit before she glanced back at me. "I'll see you at the party on Friday, right?"
I responded with an innocent look. "I don't know. I'll go if I don't have anything planned."
She nodded happily and continued to walk away.
I get home around 2 and look at my phone. "You have two new messages. Beep. Hey, it's me. I called your cell earlier but you didn't pick up. I'm going to your concert. I found out he was cheating on me a week into our relationship. What a jerk. I think we should hang out sometime this week. By the way, there's a party on Friday. Will you come?"
I'm finally fed up with her and I listen to the second message. "Hey! It's your awesome friend, Jaymee. I called as I promised but we always miss each other. I'm coming into town tomorrow. I might make it to your concert. I suppose you still live in the same place so I'll drop by in the afternoon. Rawr! See you then."
I drove towards a plaza. I tapped Jaymee on the shoulder. "Excuse me, miss but I think you left this behind." She jumped at my touch and smiled at me. "I didn't leave you behind on purpose. I just enjoy the fact that you follow me like a hopeless puppy. You guys were awesome last night."
She put her hand over her mouth. "I wasn't supposed to say that…"
"Why didn't you go backstage?"
"The roadies wouldn't let me through."
"I'll give them a talk about it."
She was clearly thinking about me. "Did you know that I became impossibly in love with you last year?"
"Really. Remind me again. Do you want something more?"
She blushed. "I…ye-…no…maybe. I can't decide!"
"And if I do this…" I leaned into her and kissed her cheek. She was startled and speechless.
"Damn it! I lost the bet."
I picked her up Shrek-style into my car. "Well, at least I know who has to deal with me for a week."
Her arms and legs tried to hit me. This was going to be a fun week.
All for a Cookie
The test: Get the cookie.
It doesn't sound hard. It shouldn't be hard to do. But it took me a while just to get that damn cookie.
The first task: Look for a weak spot on the floor of the room and jump on it.
I walk around the whole room trying to find a weak spot like the paper said. This was going to be a pain to find since this room's floor was carpet! I found the weak spot and checked the note. I jumped. Down the floor I go!
The second task: Run away from the vegetarian wolves.
That doesn't sound so bad. If they catch you, they'll lick you to death and won't let you go. Oh dear. Oh look! A—Ow. Lesson: Don't run into doors without opening them.
The third task: Catch the white rabbit and kiss it.
Someone must have a sick joke. All the rabbits here are white. Sighing, I pick up one of the adorable rabbits and the vicious little thing chomps on my finger. I quickly kiss it and leave the room. Lesson: Rabbits may be cute little fur balls but they're evil little fur balls.
The fourth task: Beat Alice in a chess match.
Alice grinned at me as she sat next to her friend wearing a Cheshire cat costume. One of the white rabbits from the other room hopped on the other side of the room. "White Rabbit! Wait!" The girl began chasing the terrified rabbit. I sighed and rearranged the board before she came back.
The fifth task: Find the cookie.
I looked inside the large cookie jar. I pick up the first thing I touch. It moved. A mouse! I squeal and dump out the contents of the jar. No cookie.
The real fifth task: Do a Romeo and climb the trellis.
I start climbing the trellis. "O Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?" The voice of a guy trying to speak in falsetto. "Juliet!"
The second part to the fifth task: Kiss your Juliet.
I place a quick kiss to his lips. "Okay, where's my cookie?" He smirks at me. "I ate it. I can always give you something better."
The real prize: A night with a boy toy and a cookie.
Next time, I'm going to the store.
