Hey guys! I'm sooo sorry I disappeared for three months. But, this chapter is the Monster Chapter 2, I'm not kidding. It's only three thousand words or so shorter than chapter four. It's nuts, man, nuts. This chapter was icky, but I got it done, with much thanks to AlwaysForTheGay I'm not kidding. She saved my soul at this point. Stupid settings. But, yeah, it's finally done.

Oh, and I have some news. I have a blog dedicated soley to CoS. It's really cool, but it's got quite a bit of spoilers, so if you don't like spoilers, don't go there. Pretty much the entire story will be spoiled if you do, since I have a chapter title/summaries sheet. But, it will have physical descriptions of all the characters up soon, so if you want to check that out, the URL is: http (:) (/) (/)words flow almost like magic (.) edublogs (.) org(/). Just remove the spaces and parentheses and you'll have it.

Now... on to the review responces!

AlwaysForTheGay: Maggie can earn the cookie and the little one-shot of choice that I'll write for the person who guesses it right. I should have said species because that's what I'm going for. I don't mention that in what you read. Trust me, my dear, you'll hate him even more by the end of this story. Heck, I even kind of hate him with the plans I have for him. And yes, I'm going to send you this chapter to beta, but I want to get it up before I have angrier readers after my hide. She's alright with it, just no lemons. XD

Aww, Maggie! You make me blush. -blushes- Thank you so much. I'm estatic that you like this story so much. Hopefully you'll continue to enjoy this story as it continues to be told. I've got some fun things planned. I might tell you, beta-muse person. If you ask nicely.

Ascended-Demon: You changed your user? I was really surprised when I got a review from this penname instead of "purrty-guurl101". Jeez. It seems like everyone wants to punch Demetri in the face. He's not that bad. ... ... ... Okay, he is that bad. But you can't hurt him too badly. I still need him. Thanks for the review! I hope you like this chapter too.

Kiseki Otome: New reviewer! New reviewer! Yay! -does the "new reviewer" dance- My goodness, I'm glad you like it so much and I'm glad I've made you happy. Just wait, in the coming chapters, there's more shonen ai/yaoi fluff although it won't be from Kit and Fang but rather the two new characters I brought it. I think you'll all like them.

Okay, so I've responded to you all and so let's get to what you guys are actually reading this for, hm? Oh, and for my little challenge I posed to you guys I've decided to give you guys a hint: Kay is a human, but she's something else that I consider a "species". So, hopefully that wil help you.

Now... let's actually get to the real chapter now, hm? Oh and this is unbeta-ed, so as soon as I get the beta-ed version from both Maggie and my teacher, I'll post that.

Part 1: Mysteries

Chapter 7: Twined String, New Mysteries (For both the characters and the readers XD)

-Kit-

The room smelled sterile. That was the first thing I noticed. It was almost too clean and hospital-like. I didn't like hospitals at all. I'd been at a hospital when my world fell out from underneath me. Wait… there was something else too. A warm, sweet smell that made something inside me feel strangely good.

Slowly, I opened my eyes, staring up at the golden ceiling and gasping as pain slammed into my body. It felt like fire was rushing inside my veins. The strangeness of the voice that was inside me reappeared and something rubbed across my mind, almost as if it was trying to calm me down.

"Oh, you're awake?" a kind, female voice asked and I tried to sit up, groaning in deep pain. "Come now, you shouldn't try to sit up in your condition. It'll only agitate your wounds." I looked up to see a woman with dark red hair and kind but dark eyes. She gently pushed me back down and I saw that I was being propped up by a couple pillows.

"Why am I here? What happened?" I asked and her lips pursed.

"You don't remember?" she asked and I shook my head. When I tried to think back, all I could see were flashes. Fang's bright golden eyes staring at me, Demetri's cold black ones smirking at me with malicious intent, harsh searing pain slamming into the back of my neck… and then the sweet feeling of being held by someone lovingly, my hand brushing against hair that was silken soft and smooth.

"I… I don't remember who did this to me," I managed to say, reaching toward my neck to touch my pendant… only to realize it wasn't there. I looked around wildly, sighing in relief when I saw my pendant resting on the bedside table innocently, the silver chain completely free of blood. I picked it up and moved to clasp the chain around my neck.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you," the woman's voice said softly and I looked up at her. Her eyes were strangely calm, but there was something else in her gaze that I didn't understand.

"Wh-why not?" I asked shakily and smiled a little bit, reaching over and stroking my ears gently.

"One of your wounds is on the back of your neck. Putting this on, no matter how light it is, will probably open the wound again," she said and I looked at her.

"Who are you?" I asked and she laughed a little.

"I forgot to introduce myself, didn't I? I'm Tanya, head nurse here at Ashtire Academy," Tanya said, smiling softly at her. "I'm also in charge of discipline here, as the vice headmaster." My eyes widened.

"Why are you doing two jobs?" I asked and she shrugged a little, sitting down next to the bed. Her boyish hair brushed against her chin and she tucked it away.

"I'd rather not be in the limelight as my husband is," she murmured, still stroking my hair. Unconsciously, I leaned into the touch, somehow knowing this woman wasn't going to hurt me. "Jacob has always been better at keeping appearances up."

"Your husband is Jacob Ashtire? She laughed again, but I didn't feel stupid because of it. I felt warmth shooting through my body.

"Yes. He trusts me more than any other person in this school, and wouldn't want the job to fall to somebody he believed wouldn't keep the traditions and morals of Ashtire alive," Tanya said, just as the door opened. I looked over, seeing Fang walking into the room with a man by his side.

"Kit, are you okay?" he asked walking over to my bedside quickly as Tanya stood, walking over to the other man. They shared a sweet kiss and I blushed softly, realizing that she was also Fang's godmother.

"I'm fine, Fang. Just a little sore," I said softly and he sighed softly, his hand going to my hair. I purred softly, moving my hand closer as he stroked my hair.

"Do you remember what happened?" the other man asked softly and I looked over at him.

"No, sir. I only remember flashes," I replied and he chuckled softly.

"You don't need to call me "sir", Kit. You're Fang's roommate and it is unnecessary. Just call me Jacob," he said, smiling at me. "Almost none of the teachers appreciate the formality of Mr., Mrs., sir and such." I nodded and Fang growled deeply. I looked over at him, alarmed at his growl. Jacob shot him a look and he stopped growling, sitting down on the edge of my bed.

"That bastard Gabriel did it," he hissed, ignoring Tanya as she sputtered, "Language, young man!" He continued speaking as if she hadn't spoken. "He did it on purpose to make sure he, Demetri and his cronies don't get pinned for it." I blinked, a little confused.

"Can't you say you say him do it, Fang?" I asked and Fang shook his head.

"No. Fights between me and Demetri are legendary in this school. If Jacob did agree with me, then it would show a sign of favoritism toward me because I am his godson," he hissed and I reached over, carefully stroking his hair. Fang started to relax and I bit my lip softly. Everywhere I went I seemed to cause trouble.

I looked down at my lap, where the leaf pendant stood out brightly against the startling white of the sheets. It was always like this: I got hurt, someone got in trouble and then everyone hated me and I was alone. My hands were pulled from Fang's hair and I sat up suddenly.

"Kit? What's wrong?" Fang asked but I didn't look at him. I threw the covers off and bolted out of the bed, thankful that I was still dressed in my clothing without my shoes. I could hear Tanya asking me to get back in bed so I could rest. Jacob's voice was asking me what was wrong, but Fang's voice was easiest for me to hear. I couldn't make out the words, but just the sound of his voice rolling over my eardrums made me hurt.

Tanya's footsteps echoed in my ears but I ran toward the window and jumped out, hearing Fang's voice shouting for me to stop. But I couldn't. Something was wrong inside of me and I just couldn't handle being near him… only for him to tell me that he couldn't be around me because of what I had done.

I rolled when I hit the ground, lessening the impact, but it still hurt badly. I didn't look back as I ran, trying to get anywhere but here. My feet led me passed throngs of kids, almost all of them with animal features, who looked at me strangely as I gripped my leaf pendant so tightly… I thought I would draw blood. I ignored them all, still running with my ears flat against my head.

I could hear Fang chasing after me, but I ran faster, pulling my ears and tail inside my body so he couldn't follow my scent. I saw a small wall off to the side of the path I was running on, slightly hidden by a dense green foliage. I veered off the path, leaping over it and landing harshly on the soft grass on the other side.

My knees rammed into the ground, causing my body to fly forward. "Whoa there!" a woman's voice said and instead of slamming my head into the ground, I felt myself grabbed by the shoulders and flipped over so I was resting on my back. The wounds I'd gotten earlier screamed in agony and I groaned, looking up at the clear blue sky.

"Kori… I think you might've killed him," another woman's voice said. Two heads suddenly appeared before me and I blinked up at them. Was I seeing double? Both women had long burgundy hair and piercing ice blue eyes. They looked like twins.

"Nah, I didn't kill him. See? He's still breathing," one of the woman said, the one on my right, as she looked over at the other. "You worry too much, Jasmine." The other woman, Jasmine I think, just shook her head and rolled her eyes at the other woman before looking at me.

"Are you alright?" she asked and I nodded, wincing as pain hit me. "Are you a student here?" The other woman rolled her eyes again.

"Duh he's a student here, Jassy. If he wasn't, he wouldn't be on the island," she said as Jasmine helped me sit up. Pain hit me once more and I hissed in pain before looking at them.

"Are you two twins?" I asked and they both nodded, smiling at me.

"Yes. I'm Jasmine, and that's my sister Kori," Jasmine said, and Kori winked.

"I'm the funner one of the two of us," she said and Jasmine shook her head, rolling her eyes a little.

"Kori, 'funner' isn't a word," she said patiently and Kori stuck her tongue out at Jasmine.

"Fine, I'm much more fun to be around than she is. Happy?" she asked and Jasmine sighed, shaking her head before looking at me again.

"You didn't tell us who you were," she said and I blinked before blushing lightly. Kori laughed and ruffled my hair.

"I'm Kit," I said, smiling at them before blinking. They didn't seem young enough to be students. Maybe they had been held back? "Are you two students?" Kori and Jasmine exchanged looks before laughing loudly.

"No, we're too old to be students," Jasmine said as Kori wiped tears from her eye. "It wasn't that funny, Kor."

"On the contrary, Jas, it was insanely funny," Kori said before looking at me with serious eyes. "Jasmine is Jacob's personal secretary and I'm a teacher. I teach self-defense lessons as a class and you're in one of my classes. With Fang and Spin." I looked away at the mention of my roommate. She groaned, running a hand through her dark burgundy hair. "Please tell me you two didn't get into an argument already!"

"No… I just caused some trouble that involves him," I mumbled and Jasmine put a hand on my shoulder, watching me with kind eyes.

"What happened?" she asked and I shrugged.

"I don't remember. Fang said something about Gabriel making sure I wouldn't be able to pin the blame on anyone," I said softly as Kori growled, cursing under her breath, regardless of her sister's glare.

"Gabriel always does things like this. He wants to keep his hands clean as well as Demetri's and Nathaniel's," she said as someone leaped over the short wall. I turned around, wincing when I saw Fang standing there with a dark look on his face. Kori looked at him and smiled a little. "Hey, Fang. Are you looking for a runaway fox?" she asked and I hissed under my breath before slowly creeping away.

"Kit, don't move." Fang's voice was cold as ice and sharp as a whip, rendering me motionless. I'd never heard his voice so cold or so sharp. I looked down, ashamed. "What were you thinking? Your wounds could have opened again when you jumped through the window or when you landed. Were you even thinking?" he demanded and I winced, ready for the sharp blow to land on me.

"Enough, Fang," Jasmine ordered, her voice just as cold, if not colder, than his had been. "He's been through enough today and what he doesn't need is you acting like this. Calm down." I heard Fang sigh and a hand rested on my head, causing me to flinch and want to squirm away, until the hand started to stroke my hair softly, occasionally scratching at the base of my ears.

"I'm sorry, Kit. It's just… you scared me half to death," he said softly and I looked up at him.

"I'm the one who should be saying sorry, Fang. I shouldn't have run out. Tanya's really mad at me, isn't she?" I asked softly and Fang laughed a little bit.

"More like worried sick," he responded, smiling a little. "When you enter Ashtire, you immediately become one of her children, no matter what circumstances you come from. She worries about all students and teachers." Jasmine smiled, leaning against Kori a little bit.

"On the school crest, there's a set of hands surrounding the tree that shows the four seasons. Those hands are Tanya's hands, because she's the mother of all of Ashtire. Nobody ever wants to get her pissed off. Mount Vesuvius' explosion would look like a baby's sneeze compared to her anger," Jasmine said and Kori nodded.

"A parent pissed her off once because they were criticizing the teachers and the way Jacob was running the school. Not to mention, that parent had a history of abusing their child and they tried to hurt the kid within Ashtire grounds. Tanya threw the parent out but let the student stay here at school," Kori said, cackling a little bit. "She's a wicked woman when she wants to be." Fang sighed and nodded.

"Yeah, but Jacob can be just as bad… he just doesn't look like he could cause trouble," he said before looking down at me. My eyes were wide as I looked at them.

"She seriously did that?" I asked, yawning a little bit. Kori and Jasmine nodded seriously.

"Seriously," Kori said.

"Tanya takes the protection of all those at Ashtire very seriously. She and Vince love and care about everyone inside of the boundaries of the island, even people like Demetri and Gabriel. Tanya will kill to protect anyone that attends, teaches at or calls their home Ashtire," Jasmine told me and I bit my lip, looking at my lap.

Maybe she could be the mother I'd never had, but always wanted. I looked up, pushing my red-brown hair out of my eyes. "She really loves everyone here?" I asked softly and Fang nodded, tipping my head up so he could see it clearly.

"Yes, she loves everyone here. I think she has a real soft spot for the newbies, though," he said, winking at me and I smiled a little before yawning. Fang smiled and scooped me into his arms, making me ride piggy-back. "Speaking of Tanya, she's going to kill me if I don't get to back to the infirmary," he told me and I willingly wrapped my arms around his neck as he carried me back to the infirmary.

As we walked, the steady gait of Fang began to lull me into a light doze and I started to fall asleep, my arms tightening around his neck a little. A question bubbled to my lips, but I pushed it back, unwillingly to ask the question. Instead, I rested my head against his shoulder and let myself fall asleep, unaware that magic was beginning to work around me and Fang.

-Amber-

I watched Spinel with wide eyes as she stared at the woman in our room. To me, she looked like she belonged on the sea, sailing in the wide open waters instead of here on land. Her bright blue-green eyes pierced Spinel's liquid brown ones and her deeply tanned skin looked strange in this room.

"What do you mean, 'Demetri got him'?" Spinel demanded and the woman bit her lip softly, pushing dark, sand-colored over her shoulder.

"Demetri and his cronies got him. Gabriel poisoned Kit to make it so he couldn't tell exactly who hurt him," she said and Spinel growled.

"Damn him," she hissed and I gasped.

"Wait!!! Is Demetri…?" I asked, not finished my sentence as I looked at Spinel with wide eyes. Was Demetri the reincarnation of that bastard who destroyed us? Why was he reborn anyway? She turned to me and nodded a little. I hissed angrily and I could feel my pendant reacting to my anger.

The metal got hot and I didn't voice the discomfort. I would kill him with my bare hands this time! A hand was placed on my shoulder and I looked to see the other woman's face inches from mine.

"Calm down, Summer," she murmured to me and I looked at her, my mouth wide open. "If you let your anger get the best of you, nothing good will come of it." Spinel looked at her with slightly wide eyes.

"Emma… how do you know about that?" she asked softly and Emma looked at her, smirking a little bit.

"I know more than I appear to, Spring. For now, however, you two must calm down before the entire world knows of your presence," she warned and I forced myself to calm down. My pendant stopped reacting and I shook my head before looking up at the other two women.

"Can we go see him?" I asked and Emma shook her head.

"Tanya would kill me if I brought you two there while he's sleeping," she said and I frowned a little, playing with a strand of my hair. Spinel frowned a little but sighed.

"We can't cross Tanya, Amb," she said tiredly, running a hand through her sandy hair. "If we do, we're in deep trouble. She's the head nurse and the vice headmaster. Not to mention she's got a temper from Hell." I chuckled weakly and sighed.

"I can't help but worry about him. He is my baby brother," I said softly and Spinel smiled a little, wrapping her arm around my waist and pulling me close to her.

"It'll be okay, Amber. Fang's watching him, right Emma?" she asked and Emma nodded.

"He and Jacob were just about to go inside to check up on him," she said and I smiled a little bit.

"That's good to know. I'm glad he's got someone familiar watching him." Emma nodded before holding her hand out.

"I'm Emma Piarete, grounds caretaker and guardian," she said and I took her hand, shaking them a little.

"Amber Johnson, new student and girlfriend of Spinel," I responded and Emma laughed, shaking my hand in return.

"Spin's girlfriend, huh?" she asked, looking me up and down. I flushed softly but stood still. "I approve, my dear. Just tell me when Fang gets someone so I can approve them too." Spinel laughed and I just smiled.

"Are you married too?" I asked and Emma raised an eyebrow at me a little bit.

"What makes you ask such a question?" she asked in return and I just shrugged, only a little embarrassed I was asking such things.

"Well, I noticed that Kay and Vince were married, and you seem like you would be too," I responded and Emma smiled a little.

"Sharp, I like that. Spin, I definitely approve now. As a matter of fact, I am married, to one slightly nutty History teacher names Dustin Piarete," she said and I smiled a little bit.

"Is he a slightly nutty History teacher at Ashtire?" I asked and she nodded.

"Yup, that's my Dust. You'll meet him at your first class or sometime in the next few weeks," Emma said, pushing her hair back again and I caught sight of two tattoos on the left side of her collarbone. One was in blue ink and it looked like a small wave about to crash over the land. The other was in green ink, looking like a gust of wind curling in on itself. Both tattoos were about the size of a small bottle cap, maybe, if not a little bigger.

"You have tattoos?" I asked and she blinked, looking down at them before looking up at me with a glimmer in her eyes.

"Not exactly, but I guess you could call them that," she said with a laugh in her voice.

As I watched her, I was almost forcefully reminded of a coral-pink haired goddess with bright sea blue eyes. Those eyes glimmered with cheerfulness and pure joy, and they were full of love when they looked at us. I shook my head and smiled at Emma.

"Well, I'm glad I met you so I know not to get on your bad side," Amber said seriously and Emma laughed.

"Oh, it's very hard to get on my bad side when you're connected to Spinel and Fang," Emma said, winking. "You're gonna really have to work at it. But I doubt you will. You seem like a sweet enough girl." I blushed softly.

"Thank you," I replied and she just smiled again.

"Eh, no prob. I tend to almost always tell the truth unless I have a reason not to," she said before slipping passed us and going to the door. She turned to look at us and smiled. "I'll see you two later, okay? I have to go make sure none of the new kids try to climb the wall," she told us before slipping out the door.

"I like her," I said and Spinel laughed a little, locking the door and taking off her shoes. I copied her and looked around at my new home, my mouth practically dropping open.

It looked like a luxury hotel, in all honesty. There was a huge window along the west side of the room, giving us a beautiful view of the inner most part of the island. There were a couple of couches and love seats in a semi-circle facing the window and a couple chairs facing the TV. A high-tech kitchen was off to the right of the entryway, complete with a stainless steel refrigerator and granite or marble countertop. Kit would love it there, he was a major cooking geek.

To the left of the entryway was a decent-length hallway, which most likely led to the bedrooms and bathrooms. Spinel tugged me down it and I smiled a little as she opened the door farthest down the hall.

"Welcome to our room," she said, opening the door and pulling me inside.

"Oh my…"

My mouth dropped open at the sight of the room and Spinel laughed.

"Yeah, that was my first impression of this room too. It never stops amazing me… even after three or so years here," she said, but I barely heard her, my eyes fixed on the room.

Two full sized bed rested side by side on the wall to my right with a nightstand of black walnut in between them . Both beds were colored in deep emerald sheets and when I reached out to touch one of them, the softness made me want to melt against it. There were at least four pillows on each bed, if not five and the edges of the pillowcases and sheets were trimmed with rich gold.

Two desks were across from the beds, both made of dark mahogany wood with brass handles and knobs. Each desk had a rolling chair in front of it, both of rich burgundy and as soon as I sat down on it, I fell straight into the plushness of the cushion. I could hear Spinel laughed at me and I turned to look at her, pouting a little. She just smiled and ruffled my hair before opening her suitcase.

"Which armoire do you want?" she asked, nodding toward the wall opposite the door. I followed her nod and looked over at the French doors to the balcony, soft royal blue drapes with golden embroidery on either side of the doors. On either side of the doors were two armoires, one made of rich cherry wood and the other made of dark maple. I pointed to the maple one, remembering how much fun I'd had as a child climbing up maple trees.

"This is amazing, Spin. Are you sure there's no cost?" I asked as I set my bags on one of the beds. Spinel laughed and nodded.

"Absolutely. Jacob got a fortune as an inheritance and the island was part of it. Tanya also had a pretty big inheritance, from both her parents and grandparents, so she helped Jacob get the funding for this place. The whole purpose of Ashtire is to create a school and home for those who aren't really accepted in normal society because of their features at no cost to them or their families," Spinel said. "Oh, and Amber, you might want to try on your uniform to see if it fits. It should be in one of the armoires."

I blinked, unaware that we had uniforms, but opened the dark maple one anyway. Inside were at least fourteen copies of the same outfit, consisting of a long pale gold skirt for winter and a shorter skirt for summer and a short-sleeve button up white shirt with a breastpocket on the right with the school emblem on it. There was a golden tie for each outfit with a sun embroidered on the end of it with bronze thread. I pulled out one of the summer uniforms, whistling softly.

"These are beautiful," I said and Spinel smiled, nodding as she pulled out her own uniform. Hers was exactly like mine except the skirts were pale green and the ties was emerald with a blue-gray flower on it.

"There are four uniforms total," she told me, smiling. "One for each Season. Everyone loves the uniforms, though, so no one complains about them." I smiled, putting my uniform back.

"We don't have to wear them until school starts, do we?" I asked and Spinel shook her head.

"Nope, we can wear our normal clothing on weekends and during breaks if we're here… and if we go to the mainland for shopping, which is probably where we're going tomorrow to do some shopping for Kit," she said as she started putting her clothing away.

"Seems like this school is pretty open," I remarked, putting my laptop on the desk and plugging it in as it turned on. No doubt I had a few emails from my dad.

"It is. We have curfews, but that's only a time when we have to be in our rooms before the DA comes and locks up. Ours is Kori or Jasmine I think, so we're good there. I'm not sure about any other rules, but Jacob will tell us that on the day school starts," she said, and I smiled.

Ashtire really was becoming my second home.

-Spinel-

"What do you mean, 'Demetri got him'?" I asked and Emma bit her lip, pushing her hair over her shoulder like she always did when someone asked her a difficult question.

"Demetri and his cronies got him. Gabriel poisoned Kit to make it so he couldn't tell exactly who hurt him," she told me, causing a growl to slip out of my throat.

"Damn him." Amber gasped and I looked over at her, wondering if she had gasped because of my swearing.

"Wait!!! Is Demetri…?" she started and I knew where she was going, so I nodded. She hissed and I could feel the heatwaves rolling off her pendant as it reacted to her anger.

Emma put her hand on Amber's shoulder and leaned in so their faces were a few inches apart. I tried to quell the jealous part of me. Emma was married and she and Dustin were talking about having children. No way she was trying to make a move on Amber.

"Calm down, Summer," she murmured. "If you let your anger get the best of you, nothing good will come of it." Amber's mouth dropped open and I looked at her with slightly wide eyes. Wait… what?!

"Emma… how do you know about that?" I asked and she looked at me, smirking a little bit.

"I know more than I appear to, Spring. For now, however, you two must calm down before the entire world knows of your presence." I felt the heat die as Amber calmed down. My mind was racing. Exactly how much did Emma know about this?!

"Can we go see him?" Amber asked and Emma shook her head.

"Tanya would kill me if I brought you two there while he's sleeping," she said, causing Amber to frown and swirl a lock of hair around her finger. I frowned and sighed, knowing Tanya would have my hide, even if I was one of her favorite students if I brought Amber to see Kit.

"We can't cross Tanya, Amb," I told her, running a hand through my hair as I spoke. "If we do, we're in deep trouble. She's the head nurse and the vice headmaster. Not to mention she's got a temper from Hell." Amber giggled weakly and sighed.

"I can't help but worry about him. He is my baby brother," she murmured and I couldn't help but smile, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her against me.

"It'll be okay, Amber. Fang's watching him, right Emma?" I asked and Emma nodded.

"He and Jacob were just about to go inside to check up on him," she said, which caused Amber to smile a little bit.

"That's good to know. I'm glad he's got someone familiar watching him," she said and Emma nodded before holding her hand out.

"I'm Emma Piarete, grounds caretaker and guardian," she said and Amber took her hand, shaking it a little.

"Amber Johnson, new student and girlfriend of Spinel," she replied and Emma laughed, shaking her hand in return.

"Spin's girlfriend, huh?" she asked, looking Amber up and down. She flushed softly but stood still. "I approve, my dear. Just tell me when Fang gets someone so I can approve them too." I let out a laugh as Amber smiled.

"Are you married too?" Emma looked at Amber with a strange look before raising an eyebrow.

"What makes you ask such a question?" she asked and Amber fidgeted a little, a tiny blush on her face.

"Well, I noticed that Kay and Vince were married, and you seem like you would be too," she mumbled and Emma smiled, a sharp gleam in her eyes.

"Sharp, I like that. Spin, I definitely approve now. As a matter of fact, I am married, to one slightly nutty History teacher names Dustin Piarete," she said, causing me to chuckle and Emma to smile.

"Is he a slightly nutty History teacher at Ashtire?" Amber asked and she nodded.

"Yup, that's my Dust. You'll meet him at your first class or sometime in the next few weeks," Emma said, pushing her hair back again. My eyes drifted to the tattoos on her collarbone. She had never told me and Fang the story behind it, saying it was too dark for us.

"You have tattoos?" Amber asked and Emma looked confused for a moment before glancing down at her collarbone. She smiled a little.

"Not exactly, but I guess you could call them that," Emma said with a laugh in her voice.

I stood there quietly, watching one of my oldest friends interact with my girlfriend. It was so peaceful and I loved the way they were talking to each other. It was sweet.

"Well, I'm glad I met you so I know not to get on your bad side," Amber said seriously and the ground's guardian laughed.

"Oh, it's very hard to get on my bad side when you're connected to Spinel and Fang," Emma said, winking at her. "You're gonna really have to work at it. But I doubt you will. You seem like a sweet enough girl." Amber blushed softly.

"Thank you," she murmured and the grounds guardian shrugged..

"I like her," Amber told me and I laughed, taking off my shoes as I did. Amber copied me, her mouth dropping open when she saw the living room.

I wasn't all that awed, as this had been my room for the past two years. It looked the same as it always did, the couches and love seats set in a semi-circle and the balcony was still across the room from us. Nothing had changed at all, and that's what I love about it. I didn't let Amber oogle for long though, soon dragging her down the hallway and to the last room.

"Welcome to our room," I told her, opening the door and pulling her inside.

"Oh my…"

Amber's mouth dropped open and I laughed. I loved her reactions to everything. She was like a little child.

"Yeah, that was my first impression of this room too. It never stops amazing me… even after three or so years here," I said, but it was obvious she didn't hear me too well. Her gaze was fixed on the gorgeous room.

Amber walked over to the desk chair and laughed as she sunk into the plush cushions. She pouted at me and I chuckled softly again. I just smiled at her and ruffled her hair before opening up my suitcase and looking back at her.

"Which armoire do you want?" I asked and she blinked before looking at the two armoires. She whistled softly, admiring the soft colors of the wood.

"This is amazing, Spin. Are you sure there's no cost?" Amber asked as she put her bags on one of the beds and opened them. I laughed, nodding as I copied her.

"Absolutely. Jacob got a fortune as an inheritance and the island was part of it. Tanya also had a pretty big inheritance, from both her parents and grandparents, so she helped Jacob get the funding for this place. The whole purpose of Ashtire is to create a school and home for those who aren't really accepted in normal society because of their features at no cost to them or their families," I told her. "Oh, and Amber, you might want to try on your uniform to see if it fits. It should be in one of the armoires."

Amber blinked, and I couldn't help chuckle softly. Didn't I tell her we had uniforms? She opened the dark maple armoire, carefully pulling out the pieces of her uniform. I smiled as she whistled softly, holding it up against her body. "These are beautiful," she said and I smiled, nodding as I pulled out my uniform; the uniform for Spring. Our uniforms were exactly the same, except for the coloring.

"There are four uniforms total," I said, still smiling.. "One for each Season. Everyone loves the uniforms, though, so no one complains about them." Amber smiled too, putting it away.

"We don't have to wear them until school starts, do we?" I shook my head.

"Nope, we can wear our normal clothing on weekends and during breaks if we're here… and if we go to the mainland for shopping, which is probably where we're going tomorrow to do some shopping for Kit," I said, starting to put my other clothing away.

"Seems like this school is pretty open," she said as she put her laptop on one of the desks and plugged it in. I copied her, turning it on and logging in, as I had logged out before I had shut down my computer.

"It is. We have curfews, but that's only a time when we have to be in our rooms before the DA comes and locks up. Ours is Kori or Jasmine I think, so we're good there. I'm not sure about any other rules, but Jacob will tell us that on the day school starts," I told her and she smiled, giggling softly.

I giggled too, logging into the WiFi account for internet before checking my email. I had a few messsages from my mother and father and, surprisingly, one from Jacob.

Spinel,
I hate to bother you so early in the term, but we have a slight problem… more like three big problems. One of of which is your other male roommate, Kit Carlson. It appears that Demetri attacked Kit but we aren't sure if it's true or not because Gabriel did something that made him unable to pin the blame on anyone. I want you to watch him and keep an eye of Fang; make sure he doesn't attack Demetri or Gabriel. Make sure he keeps his head cool.

The other two problems I have are intertwined. We have two new, and very sudden, students coming and I would like for you, Fang, Amber and Kit to watch them and help them out at school. Their names are Alex Wondren and Cheshire "Ches" Katze. Please watch out for them for me.
Thanks!
Jacob.

I blinked as I read the email. Two new students? That was just weird. Jacob always knows who's coming to Ashtire and students were never a surprise. But these two obviously were. I sighed softly.

Looks like this year at Ashtire is going to be very eventful.

-Fang-

I stood in front of Jacob, leaning back against the wall as he paced a little. "Gabriel did that?" he asked softly, looking over at me. I nodded, ears twitching softly.

"Yeah. I don't get it, Jake," I said, running a hand through my hair. He sighed, running his hand through his dark brown hair, reddish gold eyes thoughtful. Jacob didn't have an animal, but I swear he looked like he was a hawk because of his strangely colored eyes.

"Neither do I, Fang, neither do I," he said before looking at the infirmary door. I could tell his mind was racing, but what he was thinking about… I couldn't tell. He was constantly turning the small hourglass hanging off a leather chord, watching the sand tipping back and forth, back and forth. "C'mon, Tanya will probably let us see Kit." My ears perked up and he laughed, ruffling my hair in a fatherly fashion before leading me into the infirmary.

Kit and Tanya were sitting on the bed, talking softly before they looked over at us. Tanya smiled a little, standing up and walking over to Jacob, the two of them sharing a sweet kiss. I smiled a little, before sitting down next to Kit, he blushed softly, tearing his eyes away from my godparents.

"Kit, are you okay?" I asked softly and Kit looked at me.

"I'm fine, Fang. Just a little sore," he said and I sighed softly, reaching over and stroking his hair gently. Kit started purring softly and I smiled, loving the soft purrs that came from his throat.

"Do you remember what happened?" Jacob asked and Kit looked at him, shaking his head softly.

"No, sir. I only remember flashes," he said and Jacob chuckled softly, waving his hand.

"You don't need to call me "sir", Kit. You're Fang's roommate and it is unnecessary. Just call me Jacob," he said, smiling at my roommate. "Almost none of the teachers appreciate the formality of Mr., Mrs., sir and such." He nodded and I started growling deeply. I didn't notice Kit's shocked look, but I did register Jacob's look which caused me to stop growling. He was like the Alpha of the pack that was Ashtire. I had to obey him, both as my headmaster and as my godfather. I sat down on the edge of Kit's bed again.

"That bastard Gabriel did it," I snarled, not caring about Tayna's squawking about my language. "He did it on purpose to make sure he, Demetri and his cronies don't get pinned for it." Kit blinked, looking up at me with confusion in his eyes.

"Can't you say you say him do it, Fang?" he asked and I shook my head, scowling a little.

"No. Fights between me and Demetri are legendary in this school. If Jacob did agree with me, then it would show a sign of favoritism toward me because I am his godson," I hissed, feeling Kit reach over and begin to stroke my hair. I slowly started to relax and just as I was about to completely relax, Kit's hands pulled away from my hair and he sat up.

"Kit? What's wrong?" I asked, watching as he got out of bed and picked up the leaf pendant. He seemed… more skittish than normal. Jacob and Tanya watched him worried, both asking questions. Kit didn't respond, just shook his head and started backing away. "Kit? Are you okay?" Tayna was slowly walked toward him but he shook his head, turning and running toward the window. My eyes widened as he jumped out of it.

"KIT! Stop!" I cried, running over to the window too and looking out of it.

"Fang, go after him," Tanya said and I looked over at her, a question in my eyes. "You need to make sure he doesn't get hurt or anything while he's out there. He's vulnerable right now." I nodded, leaping out of the window too. I heard Tanya muttering angrily under her breath as I also rolled before throwing myself to my feet and running after the way Kit had gone.

As I ran passed the short wall separating the sparring field from the path I was on, I heard Kori and Jasmine talking to Kit. I smirked a little, leaping over the wall. Kit turned to face me, slowly starting to scoot back. I was not a happy camper and it was obvious Kit could tell by the look on my face.

"Hey, Fang. Are you looking for a runaway fox?" Kori asked and Kit slowly started creeping away. I scowled a little.

"Kit, don't move," I ordered, my voice frigid and he froze, looking down at his lap. "What were you thinking? Your wounds could have opened again when you jumped through the window or when you landed. Were you even thinking?" I snarled, anger taking over. I didn't notice the way Kit flinched away from me.

"Enough, Fang," Jasmine ordered, and I looked at her, eyes dark. "He's been through enough today and what he doesn't need is you acting like this. Calm down." Sighing softly, I forced myself to relax, reaching out a putting a hand on Kit's head. He flinched a little, but I just ruffled his hair and scratched the base of his ears.

"I'm sorry, Kit. It's just… you scared me half to death," I murmured and he looked up at me.

"I'm the one who should be saying sorry, Fang. I shouldn't have run out. Tanya's really mad at me, isn't she?" Kit whispered and I laughed softly.

"More like worried sick," I told him, actually smiling now.

"She's a wicked woman when she wants to be." I sighed and nodded empathetically.

"Yeah, but Jacob can be just as bad… he just doesn't look like he could cause trouble," I said, looking down at Kit, who was watching us with widened emerald eyes.

"She seriously did that?" he asked, a huge yawn slipping out of his throat once he finished speaking. Kori and Jasmine nodded seriously.

"Seriously," Kori said.

"Tanya takes the protection of all those at Ashtire very seriously. She and Vince love and care about everyone inside of the boundaries of the island, even people like Demetri and Gabriel. Tanya will kill to protect anyone that attends, teaches at or calls their home Ashtire," Jasmine said and Kit looked at his lap, thinking.

He then looked up, pushing some of his hair out of his eyes. "She really loves everyone here?" he whispered and I nodded, gently lifting his chin so I could see his eyes more clearly.

"Yes, she loves everyone here. I think she has a real soft spot for the newbies, though," I told him, winking at him. Kit smiled a tiny bit before yawning widely, which caused me to smile and scoop him up so he was riding piggy-back. "Speaking of Tanya, she's going to kill me if I don't get to back to the infirmary," I said as the sleepy little fox wrapped his arms around my neck.

I felt him fall asleep as I walked back and I couldn't help but chuckle a little bit, smiling a tiny bit. His arms were tight around my neck, not tight enough to cut off my breathing and I laughed softly, not caring about the looks we were getting as I walked back to the infirmary building.

Tanya was standing at the foot of the stairs to the building, watching us. She smiled, immedialtely walking forward to make sure he was okay. When she had made sure he was alright, she sighed softly. "You can take him to your dorm room now. Make sure he stays in bed and sleeps this off. Send me an email or a text message when he's away," she ordered and I nodded, making her smile. "And make sure he eats some substantial food, alright? He's too thin…"

"Of course, Tanya. You know I will," I said and she smiled, kissing my cheek before shooing me away. As I walked off, I heard her sigh softly and say something before she walked into the building. I looked back at Kit, seeing his peacefully sleeping face resting against my shoulder. Resisting the urge to soo and smile at him, I hurried to our building, smiling when I saw Dustin walking over.

"Good to see you again, Fang," he said, purple eyes smiling at me. I smiled too, shifting Kit on my back.

"Hey, Dust," I said, moving over and holding a hand out. He shook it, clapping me on the shoulder. Dustin had always been one of my favorite teachers here, besides Kay when she actually taught a class. Dustin raised an eyebrow when he saw Kit's arm hanging limply from my shoulder. "He's my roommate. Tanya's orders."

"Ahhha," Dustin said, nodding. "I understand. I'll let you go then. You don't want an angry Tanya on your butt." I nodded in agreement, waving to him before entering the dorm building. People called greetings to me and I called them in return, sighing in relief when I entered the elevator. I dodn't like this very much.

The elevator ride was slow, like it usually was, but the walk to the room I'd had ever since I came here was short, even with the sleeping Kit on my back. He was so sweet and innocent that I couldn't help but want to take care of him, so I tried to be absolutely silent when I entered the dorm room and snuck into my room. Resting him on the bed, I covered him up and brushed his bangs away from his face, smiling a little.

"Sleep well, Kit."

-Alex-

I watched Ches pace back and forth and back and forth. He was always so anxious when he was in a small place like this. Shaking my head a little, I stood up and put my hands on his shoulders, which was quite difficult as he was six one or two and I was five four. I frowned at him and he sighed, bending down a little so I actually could do as I wanted.

"You need to relax," I told him and he shrugged a little.

"You should be allowed to come to this school regardless," Ches said, pouting a little and I shook my head.

"You know I can't. I don't have animal features, Ches. Just relax," I soothed and he shook his head a little. The door opened and Ches and I looked back to see a man with dark brown hair walking into the room, playing with a small hourglass hanging from his neck.

"That can be arranged, Mr. Wondren, if it is truly necessary for you to attend," he said as he sat down behind the huge desk. I sat down again and tugged Ches into his seat, frowning a little at him. "Tell me, why does Mr. Katze desire you to come to this school so much?"

I bit my lip and looked over at Ches, who suddenly disappeared. "Cheshire!" I scolded and he reappeared on my lap… as a pink and purple stripped cat. I sighed a little, stroking his soft fur. "This is why." Ches purred, looking up at Mr. Ashtire with calculating eyes.

"I need him around. He… keeps me sane," Ches said and I sighed, scratching his ears a little. The headmaster blinked a little.

"You shouldn't be able to do that," he said slowly. "Those who have ears are as normal as those like Alex, but you… you aren't." Ches rolled his eyes, standing up on my lap and stretching.

"I shouldn't be able to do it… but I can. I'm not a normal human… and Alex isn't either." He disappeared as he spoke, appearing behind me in his human form. "We can't tell you why, not yet."

Jacob sat there in thought before nodded and standing up. "Very well. You need animal features to be admitted here, Mr. Wondren, but that can be easily fixed," he said, walking over to one of the many hourglasses that circled the circular room we were in. He flipped it over and immediately, the room was shrouded in darkness. Ches hissed.

"If this is a joke…"

"Ches, relax," I said softly, stroking his arm a little. He quieted and Jacob motioned for me to stand. I did so, taking a deep breath and watching him. Suddenly, all around us seven people appeared, forming a circle around us. I didn't understand what was going on.

"Cheshire, move away," one of the seven people said and I looked back at Ches, watching him carefully move away from me, but still close enough to get to me if he needed to. Eyes watched me: amber, emerald, blue-green, purple, two sets of ice blue, dark red and reddish-gold. Each set unnerved me, even more so when they reached out and light slammed into me.

I let out a startled scream, curling in on myself as my ears, head and small of my back started hurting. My nose itched and my eyes burned, blue eyes watering. I heard Ches hissing and snarling, but he didn't do anything, waiting for the light to fade. When it did, I straightened, surprised when something flopped in front of my eye. Blinking, I touched it, realizing it was an ear… my ear!

"You may enter this school now, Alex," another voice said as Ches wrapped his arms around me. "Some of our other students will watch out for you two while you are here. Take care of yourselves." And then those seven people were gone, leaving Ches, Jacob and I.

"I've already sent word to one of our students to guide you through the school. Take care," Jacob said with a smile as I tugged the rabbit ear hanging in front of my eyes. I suddenly squeaked, turning around to see Ches batting at a small puff of cotton on my clothing… my new tail.

"CHES!" I shouted, slapping his hand away. "Stop playing with my tail!" Ches whimpered a little before standing.

"Fine." Jacob smiled before shooing us away. "This will be amusing. I wonder how sensitive–"

"Finish that sentence and you're on the couch," I snarled, glaring at him before walking out of the building. Ches whimpered again before following after me silently.

-Ches-

Alex was getting fed up with me. I could tell. It wasn't my fault though, I couldn't stand being in rooms like this, with so many ticking clocks and hourglasses around us. He stood up and tried to put his hands on my shoulders, which made me bent down a little so he could actually do as he wanted. Sometimes it was a little annoying to have a lover as small Alex. But, I didn't care. He was my catnip, my china doll.

"You need to relax," he said and I shrugged, my ears twitching a little.

"You should be allowed to come to this school regardless," I pointed out and pouted a little, causing Alex to shake his head at me.

"You know I can't. I don't have animal features, Ches. Just relax," he told me, trying to be soothing, but it didn't work. I needed Alex with me, for more than just the obvious reasons. When the door opened, we looked over at the man, and my suspicions were confirmed when he sat down at the desk in front of us. He was Jacob Ashtire, the headmaster.

"That can be arranged, Mr. Wondren, if it is truly necessary for you to attend," he said to Alex as he sat down behind the huge desk. My little blond china doll sat down and then tugged me into my seat. I rolled my eyes, but did as he wanted. "Tell me, why does Mr. Katze desire you to come to this school so much?"

Alex looked over at me and I smirked internally, allowing myself to disappear. "Cheshire!" Alex reprimanded me and I pouted a little bit before allowing myself to reappear on Alex's lap as a cat. He sighed a little, but stroked my fur regardless, making me purr happily as my eyes closed for a moment. "This is why," he said and I looked up at the headmaster with calculating and cold eyes. No way was he going to keep me from my catnip.

"I need him around. He… keeps me sane," I said, hearing Alex sigh again as he scratched my ears. Jacob Ashire blinked, watching me carefully.

"You shouldn't be able to do that," he said slowly. "Those who have ears are as normal as those like Alex, but you… you aren't." I scowled a little and stood up in Alex's lap, scretching a little as my tail flicked side to side, tickling under Alex's chin softly. I heard him giggle softly.

"I shouldn't be able to do it… but I can. I'm not a normal human… and Alex isn't either," I said as I disappeared, reappearing behind Alex in my human form. "We can't tell you why, not yet."

There was silence for a moment as Jacob thought, but soon he stood and nodded. "Very well. You need animal features to be admitted here, Mr. Wondren, but that can be easily fixed," he said, walking over to one of the many hourglasses that circled the circular room we were in, flipping it over. The room was suddenly covered in darkness and I hissed, feeling my hair raise along my arms.

"If this is a joke…"

"Ches, relax," Alex told me softly, his soft skin rubbing against the raised hair on my arms. I fell silent, but my eyes were narrowed and I was still ready to attack. I was never calm and relaxed when it came to Alex. Never. Jacob motioned for Alex to stand and he did, I could hear him take a deep breath as his soft blue eyes watched Jacob. We were surrounded then and I hissed, angry. Was this a trap?

"Cheshire, move away," one of the seven people said and Alex looked back at me. I could feel his eyes on my as I stepped away, but I made sure I was still in range to get to him if something went wrong or he was hurt. I wouldn't leave him… not like before. My eyes scanned around the room, taking in the different eye colors around us: amber, emerald, blue-green, purple, two sets of ice blue, dark red and reddish-gold. I didn't trust those eyes. And I trusted them even less when strange light slammed into Alex.

When Alex screamed and curled in on myself, I leaped toward him, but a strange barrier kept me from moving. I hissed and snarled trying to fight against the strange barrier. They were hurting him!

"Relax, Cheshire," one of the people said and my eyes shot over to the pair of amber eyes. They were soft, almost remorseful, but I didn't believe those eyes. They had hurt my lover. "I wish there was a way to do this without hurting him but…"

"It must be done." My eyes moved to the figure with purple eyes. "There is no other way. Had we truly be giving him these features, he would be in more pain. We are merely unlocking what he already had." I snarled.

"So you're putting my lover in unnecessary pain?" I hissed and nobody spoke. I knew why; Alex was straightening and something had flopped into his eyes. It was… a rabbit ear. My eyes widened and I purred softly, seeing the soft white tail on his back. He looked adorable! …And completely and totally rape-able.

"You may enter this school now, Alex," a voice I almost recognized said and my arms wrapped around Alex's waist, holding him against my chest. Mm… catnip smelled good. "Some of our other students will watch out for you two while you are here. Take care of yourselves." Suddenly, those seven people left and the lights returned, leaving Alex, Jacob and I standing there.

"I've already sent word to one of our students to guide you through the school. Take care," Jacob said with a smile as I watched Alex tug on the rabbit ear hanging in front of his eye. I smiled a little before looking at the cotton tail that was mocking me. I crouched down and started batting at it, causing Alex to sqeak. He turned around and looked down at me, causing me to smile up at him innocently.

"CHES!" Alex shouted, slapping my paw away. "Stop playing with my tail!" I pouted and whimpered, but stood up, lacing my fingers behind my head.

"Fine," I said sulkily, and Jacob smiled before shooing us away. "This will be amusing. I wonder how sensitive–"

"Finish that sentence and you're on the couch," Alex hissed at me, causing my to shut my mouth and follow after him like a lost puppy. "Well, I'm in. I probably have the same scheduel you have. Only… you think this will work? You think he'll lose our trail?" he asked, looking up at me with wide blue eyes.

I didn't know how to answer. "I don't know, catnip," I admitted, wrapping my arms around Alex and holding him close. "I honestly don't know. But, I know that if he does find us… he won't touch you again." The blond turned around in my arms and looked up at me, his arms wrapping around my neck as I lifted him up. "I promise, Alex. He won't touch you again," I whispered before leaning in and kissing him softly, our bodies disappearing as I did with a gentle pop.

That madman wasn't going to hurt my lover again.

Whew! How was that? Hehe, there's a very good reason why this is called "New Mysteries"! So, who do you think Alex and Ches are talking about? Who are the seven people that gave Alex his ears and what did one of them mean by "unlocking his potential"? Why can Ches turn into a cat? Lemme know what you guys think! I wouldn't mind it if you guys left me predictions on what's gonna happen. I like seeing what's going on in my readers' heads.

So, leave a review if you want, and I'll see you guys in the next chapter, which should be up soon!

See ya!
