We are China Dolls
We do not talk
We only walk.

We have china heads
And rubber flesh
And spongy minds
And glassy souls.

We come by a brand name
Our brand name's on our tag
Our brand name is Children
We look good on your mantel
You say "Look at my Children!
How good they are!"
But that's what you
Think we are
We are China Dolls

We are China Dolls
We do not talk
We only walk
Upon your mantelpiece.
We're quite expensive dolls
But we're worth it
So you can show us off
And our marks at school
Mean nothing to you
But to say "How good they are!"
We are China Dolls

We are China Dolls
We are Kids
We are Minors
We are Preteens, Preschoolers, Teenagers, Young People and Youths

We are China Dolls

Probably written in 1980. I was 10. This was the first good poem I ever wrote... I had to be old enough to have angst before I could write poems. :-) For the record, now that I am a parent, I know that none of this is true. Except for the part about kids looking good on your mantel. I'd stick mine there all the time if I had a fireplace, or even a mantel without a fireplace.

Okay, no, I lied. Actually none of this is true. Unless you're a kid. Then all of it is.
