Chapter 2: Lunch Time Blues
The next three hours passed without event, art was somewhat entertaining, spanish two was almost a challenge and world history was sure to be a pain in the ass. So lunch rolled around. I followed the crowd into the cafeteria building and shuffled with many others into the lunch line. Standing there I took a breath and let the sound rush over me.
I could hear six or so of the conversations going on around me. Someone was complaining about a new haircut; another was worried AP history was going to be to much for them to handle; another yet was wondering if a teacher should be allowed to wear such hot skirts. I smiled at that, no matter where you go guys are always the same I suppose.
The line was moving forward, I grabbed a tray and slid it down onto the counter, I pointed at something that resembled a burrito and mumbled a "thank you" to the lunch lady who handed one to me on a paper plate. "You know, I've heard those are actually shrink-wrap around heated sewage." a voice said behind me.
I spun around lightning-fast and nearly whacked the person in front of me with my backpack. I looked up into a pair twinkling blue eyes, that for a second took my breath away; then I realized it was just Pizza-face.
"Oh hey -" Pizza-face. Oops, glad I caught myself on that one.
He beamed down at me with a smile that I swear sparkled. "Liam, it's Liam." How was his smile so brilliant? I carefully looked him over. As previously mentioned, he had bright, crystal blue eyes: the color of what you would see of the ocean from pictures of someone's crazy Caribbean get away. His teeth were spotless white and perfectly in order. He was tall, maybe six foot even. He was skinny, I would even say bony, with long, awkwardly spindly limbs. His lips were too thin and he had big flappy monkey ears that stuck out awkwardly from his slightly red-tinted blonde hair.
Why had his smile dazzled me? He wasn't exactly eye candy. No matter, I guess I was just so desperate for some human attention that wasn't menacing, any smile was unbelievably special. So I forced out a quick "Hi Liam." And turned back into the lunch line to wait to pay. Silently I stepped away from the counter and was suddenly faced with a huge dilemma.
Where to seat really is no joke in high school. They can make fun of it all they want in movies and the like, but honestly, it is a tough decision and it is that important. Assuming it's okay to sit somewhere could be an awful social move, and asking can sometimes lead to bodily harm. So I stood there looking like a freak while the world swirled around me. Make fun of me all you want, but tears began to well in my eyes. I wasn't accepted here, I knew no one, what was I supposed to do? Then there was a light tap on my shoulder and I turned to see Liam standing there with his crooked, almost cocky smile. "Ya' need somewhere to sit?" he said, to which I replied with a dull nod.
I followed him outside into the blinding sunlight. We walked past the groups of laughing students who had looked threatening just moments before. Now, they just look plain, like a bunch of kids hanging out for another normal day of school. I guess walking with Liam, changed how I saw everything, I guess I wasn't completely alone anymore. I could hear something trying to break into my thoughts, and I was just about to ask Liam if he heard it as well, when I realized that he was talking to me. "Hellooo! Erin? You okay? Hey -uh – do I need to go get some help... or..?"
I laughed nervously, "No, I'm sorry. I was off in my own little world I guess. What were you saying?"
He gave a quick, awkward, half-smile, "Well, I was saying this is where I usually sit, but there aren't any tables or anything out here so" A pause, "you kind of have to sit on the ground." He said this like it was the end of the world before quickly adding in a rushed apologetic voice, "But I mean if you want to we could sit somewhere else. We don't have to sit here if you do want I mean I could -"
I just laughed at him and sat down, setting my backpack next to me. He stood there, looking dumfounded, jaw dropped. "Are you going to sit down or what?" He remained standing, staring down at me. "What's – is there something on my face?" I exclaimed through a mouthful of nasty burrito. Swallowing, then, "Well, is there?"
"N-no, no there isn't." He recovered. "It's just - well – I've never known a girl who would voluntarily sit on the ground before and -" I cracked up, I just couldn't take it anymore! "What? What is it? What's so funny!" He cried out, embarrassed.
It took a moment for me to stop laughing, then wiping tears from my eyes I said, "So you don't know any girls who sit on the ground? Seriously? That's kind of ridiculous dude!"
Slowly he crouched down then plopped onto the ground next to me, "You must not know much about the girls around here." Scooting back up against the tree he leaned his head back and smiled.
"I guess not! What's the problem with sitting on the ground anyway?" Were girls around here really that shallow? They couldn't handle getting their pants dirty? Great, I knew I wouldn't be making friends with any of the girls any time soon.
"Hell if I know what the problem is!" We then settled into the flow of easy conversation. It turned out that we got along great. Not only did we agree on things like music and video games, but the less important things as well, like politics for example.
I was still laughing from the joke he had just told me when I said, "And don't you just get so annoyed when people don't support gay marriage? I mean come on! Why would they care?" I pushed aside my plate with my cold, forgotten sewage-burrito and looked back up at him. A sudden change had come over him. He was no longer smiling and laughing along with me, his face turned cold. He had a look of pure hatred and disgust. "Liam, uh, Liam? You okay? You don't agree with me on that, I take it?" He didn't react. "Look I'm sorry if I offended you in some way. Hey! Liam!" I followed his gaze and saw that Liam had been glaring at that beautiful specimen from Geometry. "What's that guy's name again?" I wondered aloud.
"His name is Gabriel, Gabriel Foodini, and he deserves to die." He said, his voice sounding like he had just eaten a bad piece of fruit.
And that was when I first learned about Gabriel Foodini.
A/N I had a lot of fun writing this one guys, and I like it a whole lot more than the first chapter. I hope that you enjoyed it! Tell me what you think!
