Pardon the interruption,

I did not realize you were there.

Brooding in the corner,

watching as the sun sank down.

Disappearing below the horizon.

It was not like you to hide away

and keep yourself from the world

I did not know what was proper to say,

so I stood there in the doorway.

Waiting for a sign from you.

That sign never came

though I stayed for at least an hour.

You never spoke to me,

did not move from your chair.

I was transfixed by the sight of you.

You were transfixed by the sight of no one.

Darkness settled over our heads

but I could not move to light the room.

The gloom had not lessened your features,

not that anything ever could.

You stayed in your chair.

And I – I waited.
