"I don't care if he wears a lot of make-up," Alyss said, "That clown scares me."
Theo chuckled, watching the painted-up grown man from the corner of his eye. He had to admit, that clown had a face that could make its own mother cry. Curly green hair, sickly white skin, a giant red nose, and wearing a ridiculous red and blue puffy suit.
What grown-up would willingly wear that? It seemed so disgraceful. Like screaming when you ripped off a Band-Aid. So degrading. The last thing Theo would ever do would be to dress up as a fat man with no sense of style.
"Why did we come to the circus again?" Alyss asked, watching warily as a bunch of men dressed in strange black-and-white outfits walked by. They were almost as creepy as the clowns. Their peculiar wide-eyes stared into the crowd with their black lips pursed.
"Because the circus is fun!" He exclaimed, watching the trapeze artists swing back and forth, flipping in the air and flashing bright smiles. It was quite repetitive after awhile, but so magnificently startling that it made up for its lack of variation.
"It doesn't seem very fun to me," Alyss mumbled under her breath, slightly resentful at Theo's obvious interest in one of the acrobats wearing a very tight blue Lycra leotard. Her silvery-blond hair was tied back in an elegant bun.
"You know, I've always wanted to join the circus," Theo said offhandedly, still watching the silvery-blond intently as she made a graceful backwards flip mid-air, nearly missing her partner's hands.
"Why? So you could hang out with flippy-girl?" Alyss asked bitterly, folding her arms across her chest. She let out a little huff and avoided looking directly at Theo.
"What?" Theo asked, confusion lacing his words, "You mean that girl with the shiny hair? I don't like her; she's just the best flipper. The others aren't very good." He shrugged non-chalantly. Alyss felt her cheeks light up in embarrassment.
The ring leader stepped onto the center stage, wearing a black top hat and a striking red jacket. He held a megaphone to his mouth and began speaking in a loud, gruff voice, but held that spark of childish excitement that seemed to grasp everyone's
"Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, welcome the one, the only, Blaze Inferno!" He bellowed into the megaphone, sending the crowd into an uproar. Men and women alike screamed and cheered for this 'Blaze Inferno'. Alyss frowned.
From the darkness, a young man in his mid-twenties stepped out, holding up a long, thin stick with a white cylinder on the end. Stepping onto center stage, he pulled a match from his pocket and lit. As soon as his match touched the end of his stick, it ignited into a giant ball of flame.
Alyss gasped loudly as the flaming rod twirled around in Blaze's hand. He did a few tricks with the burning pole, whipping it around in the air, narrowly avoiding scorching his whole face multiple times. And then he did something unbelievable.
He ate the fire.
"Oh my gosh!" Alyss screamed. She slapped a hand over her mouth as Theo laughed aloud. A bright, eager smile took its place on his lips. He never did look as content as he did today.
"This is why I'd love to join the circus!" He exclaimed enthusiastically, "What an adrenaline rush!" Alyss looked panicked-stricken.
"Why do they swallow the fire? Won't it burn them?" She asked in an anxious voice. She frowned, her alabaster brow furrowed. Blaze removing the extinguished rod from his mouth and smiling to the crowd did nothing to help her unease.
"It's not real," Theo shrugged, "They're just playing pretend."
"Oh." Alyss exhaled, calming down. Somehow, hearing they would be just fine from Theo reassured her. "But you're never going to join the circus and become a fire swallower like him, right?"
He sent her a strange look, "I could never. Then I'd have to leave you and you would get hurt. I don't want you to hurt. Not because of me."
She flashed him an amused smirk. "That and because I won't let you go anywhere near the fire. I'm not going to let my best friend become crispy bacon."
Theo mock frowned, "Would you still be friends with me even if I was crispy bacon?" His tone was teasing, but there was a trace of seriousness in his words. He truly was curious to what her answer would be.
"Of course silly! How could I not be friends with you?" Alyss smiled, looping her arm through his. She leaned forward to give him a quick peck on his cheek, and they spent the rest of the day laughing at the jugglers, screaming at the lion tamer and avoiding the clowns.
