She saw him and felt her knees go weak as he held out his arms to greet her. Smiling, she let his arms wrap around her and she buried her face into his shoulder. Breathing deep, she took in his acrid scent of chocolate, smoke, and testosterone. A smile slowly grew on her face when she felt him hold her tight and she finally felt safe. Her heart seemed to flutter all around her ribcage, bouncing and trying to get out so that it could be with him.

She loved him. It was as simple and as complicated as that. He was her best friend and the one person that she could always turn to for anything. And now… Now she was where she always wanted to stay, in the arms of the man that she loved. He didn't know, though the signs were perfectly clear. But she knew him long and well enough to realized that if it wasn't spelled out in front of him, then he would never get it. So today was that day. Today was the day that she was finally going to be honest with him. As soon as she opened her mouth to speak, she heard him begin talking quietly in her ear.

"Before you say anything, I want to say thank you. Thank you so very much. You helped me find her… the woman, the person that I truly love. Thank you for being such a good friend." He said and hugged her just a little bit tighter.

Her heart felt like it had just been ripped out from her chest and was beginning to crack and break. To cope, she went on autopilot and hugged him back. She heard him say something else, but it was all white noise. He kept talking and talking, filling her brain with useless words and things that were never meant for her to hear that she just wanted to run away screaming. Nodding and smiling at the correct moments, all she could think of was the giant gaping hole in her chest where her heart had once lived. His arms loosened their hold and she felt him back away. He smiled over her head and waved at someone behind her, then walked away to join hands with a girl that wasn't her.

Smiling and waving back, she felt her heart shatter in her ribcage. Collapsing to the ground, she held a hand to her chest and tried to stop those tiny fragmented pieces from falling to the ground. Tears fell freely from her eyes as the felt the empty fissure where her heart used to be freeze over. She looked up and saw him wrap an arm around the other girl's waist and plant a sweet kiss on her head. And they walked away together… Completely oblivious to all of the pain and grief that they just caused.

Shakily, the girl got back on her feet. She leaned against the row of lockers and let her head fall. The tears kept falling, even though she knew it was stupid. She had lost her chance for love with the only person that she had ever truly wanted to be with.

"I love you…" She whispered softly through the tears. "I've loved you all of this time… I've loved you for as long as I can remember…" She pushed herself off of the locker and stared at the hallway that the two lovers had just walked down. A hysterical laugh bubbled up in her throat, but she forced it down and put on a grim smile. "Only fools fall in love… for they are the true masochists. But I will no longer be a fool for such things…"

The smile vanished as quickly as it came. She turned on her heel and walked the opposite way down the seemingly foreboding hallway. As she did, she felt the pieces of her heart finally fall to the cold, unforgiving linoleum floor and allowed a bitter stone take the place of a beating heart.
