Alicia Williams turned on her TV set. "Oh come on, I know somebody had to send my name in." she muttered to nobody in particular. On the local news, people could send in dates of friend's birthdays and they would be announced. That day was Alicia's 13th birthday. "And now, the big story of the evening." the news anchor began. Alicia leaned forward. "Something large and circular is heading toward the sun at rapid rates. A UFO? Nobody knows. A group of highly trained astronauts, including Dimville's very own Arthur Williams, will soon be sent up into space to intercept this object and protect our sun. With 2010's new technologies…" Alicia flicked off the TV and sighed. Another bull shit mission for her "superstar" father. None of the missions he was ever sent on was a UFO. She picked up her cell phone and sent a text to her friend Julia. "Hey, did u c the news? Another fake mission for my dad."
"Yup. I heard. At least u hav a shoulder 2 cry on. ;-) y don't u txt david?" asked Julia.
"good idea. Txt u l8r Julia." Said Alicia.
"Davey, did you hear the news?" asked Alicia.
"Yup. I'm so sorry Leesh. I know how hard this must be. When is he leaving?" asked David, Alicia's boyfriend/neighbor.
"I don't know yet. He just walked in. c u l8r. luv u davey."
"luv u 2 leesh. Bye."
"Dad." Alicia greeted her father.
"Leesh, I'm afraid I have some bad news…" started her dad.
"I know dad. When are you leaving?" asked Alicia bitterly.
"Tomorrow." He said. "Listen
Leesh, I know this is hard, but the sun…"
"Whatever dad. I'm
going over to David's. Bye."
Alicia walked over next door to David's house and rang the doorbell.
"Oh. Hey Leesh." David said as he answered the door, with his shaggy brown hair hanging slightly over his hazel eyes.
"He's leaving tomorrow."
Alicia said, her brown eyes filled with tears. David pulled her into
a hug.
"It'll be okay." He said. "Lets go watch a movie."
David and Alicia walked through his enormous mansion. Blue, green, purple. Any color you could imagine was used somewhere in his house. His parents liked color. They went down into the basement, where his movie room was. It had a huge 6foot by 8-foot plasma screen TV in it. The walls were a dark blue, and there were two yellow beanbag chairs on the floor. David and Alicia plopped down on the beanbag chairs, turned on the TV and dimmed the lights. David took Alicia's hand as they watched the movie. When the movie ended, Alicia got up to go home for dinner. "Alicia wait." Said David. "It will all be okay. I will be there with you ever second tomorrow."
He gave her a goodbye kiss and she
went back home.
When she got home, the kitchen smelled like fire.
"Dad? What happened?" she asked.
Mr. Williams grinned sheepishly. His hair was sticking up strait, there was ash all over his face and he was wearing two pink oven mitts. "I burned the microwave spaghetti again."
