"You're making me go to Grandma's for summer instead of letting me go to Hawaii with my friends!" I exclaimed infuriated.
"Claire calm down, I think it would be best if you remembered where you came from, and that you didn't always have this luxury," Claire's mother said her hand resting for a moment on her daughters knee.
"You've known I wanted to go on this trip the entire year!" My eyes started to tear up, I felt like a five-year-old throwing a tant-trum, which was pretty much how I was acting but I didn't care.
"I know honey, but you've changed ever since you're… you're... You're father...died," Her mother's voice went high and the last part and she began to cry. Claire's father had died when Claire was five and she still hadn't gotten over it. Claire on the other hand instead of trying to cope like her mom, started going out and partying and drinking instead after the death of her father.
"Claire-bear," Her father's deep bass voice said from the living room, "Come here I have a surprise for you."
"Coming daddy!" Five-year old Claire said running from her room, "What is it daddy?"
"Close your eyes and put your hands out in front of you," Her father instructed, Claire do so.
"Ok Claire-bear you ready"
The five-year-old eagerly shook her head.
"Alright, here you go," Her father placed in her hands a gold necklace with her birth-stone dropping down from it.
"Daddy," Claire's eye became huge as she looked at the stone, she hugged her father tightly, "Thank-you daddy I love it".
She had wanted the necklace when she had seen one woman with it at the park.
"No problem Claire-bear, you want me to put it on for you?"
"Yes, please," She handed her dad the necklace, he put it on her and she went to look at herself in the mirror.
That was five months before her father's death.
