Chapter 3

It happened first back at headquarters. They had been discussing the strange creatures. "What do think they're called?" Ben was saying.

"beebles." said a voice in Kylie's head. She ignored it.

"I dunno." Shadow replied.

"Beebles." Said the voice, louder now. Kylie looked around. The others couldn't hear it. "Great," thought Kylie sarcastically, "now I'm going insane!"

"Beebles!" the voice screamed.

"Beebles." Kylie whispered.

"Kylie? Are you OK Kylie?" asked Ethan.

"What did she say?" Shadow asked Ben. Ben shook his head.

"I don't know. Keebles?"

"BEEBLES!!!!!" The voice was now so loud Kylie couldn't handle it.

She screamed.

After Ethan finished explaining A.S those years ago, Kylie had stood up and cleared her throat.

"What are you going to do now?" asked Ethan.

"I am going to go home, go to bed and wait to wake up." She said. "and if I remember it tomorrow, then I'll come back." The girl that been sitting in the back of the room looked concerned.

"Can't we make her forget?" she said. Kylie looked from the girl to Ethan. Ben and Ethan exchanged quick glances. They talked quietly to one another. "Who are you?" Kylie asked as the boys spoke.

"They call me Shadow."

"Is that your name?"

"Is that your face?"

"Pleasure." Kylie retorted.

Ethan returned to the conversation. "Kylie," he began, "We have decided to let you choose, become part of the team or forget it all."

"I choose," she said slowly. "to forget."

"Wake UUUP!" an annoyed voice chanted, "Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up!!!!!"

"Fine" Kylie shouted angrily. She opened her eyes to see the entire team staring at her. "Hi!" she said.

"What's wrong, Kylie?" Ethan asked.

"I don't know." She said. "I really just don't know." She told them about the voice. Just then the A.S. alarm went off. Kylie stood up and ran to get her jacket, but Ethan rapped his strong arms around her so she couldn't go anywhere.

"What are you doing?" asked Kylie furiously.

"You aren't going anywhere until we figure out what's wrong with you!"

"Let them go," there was the voice again. "Tell them to go and then we can travel separately."

"Fine." Said Kylie "Go. Go before some one gets hurt"

"Good!" said the voice. "I see that we have an understanding." Kylie made a face, why had she done that?

"Alright, thank you Kylie." said Ethan, he turned to Ben. "Ben, where is the alarm for?"

"Chicago same spot as earlier, sir."

"Shut up. Everybody in the van. Stay here Kylie and be careful!"

"YES SIR!!!" she said saluting playfully trying to appear unfazed by the voice. He shook his head. They left within' five minutes and Kylie grabbed her coat and used her pendant to return to Chicago. Once she was there she whispered "So who are you?"

"Look replied the voice I'm in your head, you don't have to say anything. Just think it."

"You can hear everything I think?" she asked, turning a corner. Looking for anything Alien-looking.

"Every word!" it replied cheerfully.

"Creepy, why are you in my head?"

"Any other questions?"

"Then, what is your name?"

"Does it really matter?"

"What can I call you?" Kylie asked getting annoyed.

"I don't care. How about……..Seven?"

"Seven?"

"Seven."

"Seven?"

"Do you have a mental illness I should know about? Is it contagious?"

"Seven? That's certainly very creative" Kylie retorted

"Well, what name would you pick?"

"Oh, I could think of a few! Here I'll give you a hint, how about-"

"Bite me!" interrupted Seven. "Oh, here it is."

"Here is what?"

"The bomb."

"Whoa!" exclaimed Kylie. "Who ever said anything about a bomb?"

"I believe I just did."

"Whatever! But I don't see it."

"It's that gold coin on the ground." Kylie glanced down and saw it she picked it up.

"Okay " began Seven. "Now all you have to do is disable it."

"How?" Kylie asked, unsure of surrendering her head to an alien creature, without Ethan there. Why hadn't she brought him?

"Pretend that your going to sleep and you'll be fine." And, for the safety of Chicago, she did.

She had stared straight ahead as Ethan prepared the needle. Had she made the right choice? Well, it was to late now. "What is that?"

"Imusan."

"What's that-"

"Shadow, Ben, Helen, I want you to go around back and begin loading the van," he said so sharply that they went without complaint. After they left he turned to Kylie, "Are you sure? I know you Kylie, you don't want to forget. You're just confused."

Kylie smiled she had always enjoyed Ethan's company, "Is it worth it?" Ethan considered for a moment and then answered her question. "Yes. Kylie join the team. You'll love it. I'll be here."

"Tempting, but I have a life Ethan. I can't just leave!"

"Oh yeah? What life? Serving uncooked Biscotti to ungrateful college students? How exciting!!!" he said. His voice was somewhere between sarcastic and angry, but before she could retort there was a loud crash from behind the building. Instinctively Kylie jumped up and began to run to the door. Ethan followed. It sounded like where the crew was supposed to be packing the van.

When they got there Helen lay on the ground unconscious with Ben at her side checking her heartbeat. Blood was pouring from her shoulder. Shadow was ducking behind the van holding her gun, she jumped up and fired a bullet at a cloaked figure behind a red convertible. She ducked as he returned the shot. Ethan came up behind Kylie. The man aimed, and fired. A bullet whizzed by her. Ethan fell. He collapsed into a heap on the ground. It was as simple as that he was standing, then gone.

Kylie stared blankly, unable to comprehend what was unfolding in front of her. She was vaguely aware of the cloaked man aiming his gun at her but she couldn't move. Suddenly Shadow pulled Kylie to the ground. "Pay attention!" she barked. "Ben get Helen inside" She paused as she fired but, the figure ducked and she missed – again. "Kylie, you do the same with Ethan. GO!!!"

Ben scooped up Helen and carried her to the hallway, he sprinted back and helped Kylie with Ethan. They got them upstairs and put Helen on the couch. Ethan occupied the floor. Kylie put pressure on Helen's shoulder the blood wouldn't stop coming. Ben was digging around in a drawer. He produced a bottle of children's pain reliever. When he tried to hand it to her she gave him a look that clearly said you're joking right?

He groaned, "It's not kid's medicine, it just disguises our medicine. It's different and very strong, put one drop on each wound, then some ice. Can you handle that?"

"I dunno," Kylie retorted.

"Good!" He said quickly, barely letting her answer. " I'm gunna help Shadow with that guy." He turned and ran out of the apartment toward the back of the building.

Kylie put one drop on Helen's shoulder and one on the wound on Ethan's side. She put a large bag of ice on the spots where the bullets had hit. Something moved under the bag. When Kylie picked it up she gasped. The skin was completely healed, there wasn't even a scar! The bullet was laying on the top of Helen's skin. Kylie picked the bullet up and set it on the table. Then, she turned to Ethan, when she picked up the ice pack and saw the bullet sitting there, it looked innocent, but she knew it was anything but harmless.

Helen began to stir, Kylie helped her sit and got her a glass of water. Helen smiled gratefully. As she did Ethan sat up. She helped him to a seat and got him a glass, too.

As she sat down between them Ben and Shadow Burst through the door. Together they carried the cloaked man. They set him down in the same chair that she had been unconscious in about an hour previously.

Ben lifted the hood on the cloaked man and everyone turned to look at Kylie in amazement because the masked man wasn't a man at all, it was Kylie.
