I don't think I've ever put so much thought into my school outfit before. Ever. When I was little, it was my mom's job, but once I got older and she stopped setting out clothes for me and only taking me along to shop for clothes so that she could check the sizes I just stopped caring. Maybe it was because I'd never fully realized that I looked cute at all, and that the credit was all to my mother. Maybe it was that I never cared. In any case, I certainly cared now, and boy was I panicked.

"Mom, I need to go shopping," I said in a rush when I walked in the door to my house.

If she'd been able to speak, I'm sure the only appropriate phrase for her shocked expression would be, "Who are you and what have you done with my daughter?"

"For…clothes?" She asked unsurely, as if she hardly believed that she was having this conversation at all.

"Well, yeah. I kinda have a lunch date with a guy at school," I explained, feeling my cheeks getting hot.

"A date? This weekend?" She looked faint.

"Not this weekend. Tomorrow," I answered.

"You have a boyfriend?" She sat down at the kitchen table; I had caught her putting groceries away.

"Not exactly. I want him to be though," I felt as if I was doing something wrong.

"Well, I suppose your father can make dinner for him and the boys," She lifted her car keys off of a key ring next to the door. "Let's go."

"What about this?" My mom asked me, holding up a cute tank-top.

"That looks nice," I replied as I watched her already tossing it into the mall cart that she'd snatched earlier; she only ever took them if someone ditched their cart by the door instead of turning it in at the main entrance. She hated having to pay for them.

"They've got them in a bunch of different colors, too! Clair come on, you have to try them on. I want to see how they look on you," And just like that, I had a closet's worth of tank tops and matching jackets. Sometimes, I wondered if my mother ever outgrew her teenage years. Of course, my father's profession didn't do a lot to help with her shopping obsession. He was a very accomplished script writer, while she was one of the best photographers in the area. The best part about their lives was that they basically worked from home, so they were able to spend a lot of their time together. Basically, my parents were practically rich in more ways than one.

As I stepped into the dressing room my mother brought in the clothes she wanted me to try on. She had picked out entire outfits, and I mean entire outfits, for me to try on for her. I wasn't such a big fan of some of the jewelry, but I knew a few places where we could go to fix that so she wouldn't be offended. As long as there was an acceptable replacement for clothing, my mother was never offended, which was probably the only reason I went to her for clothes money and not dad. Plus my mom was relatively good at keeping up with the styles, so she was good to go to for fashion advice.

I tried on several of the outfits and showed them off to my mother for the final verdict. It was best not to tell her about the one or two that I didn't show her because I didn't like them; I learned that lesson the hard way a long time ago.

After receiving the proper approval and replacing any unsatisfactory pieces of my new outfits, my mother paid and we left.

"Don't look," She told me when we set the clothes on the cashier's desk to be scanned.

"Why?" I asked her. Normally she couldn't care less how much we spent on clothes for me. Then again, normally we only bought my clothes as needed and even then only because my mother dragged me out of the house by my hair to go clothes shopping.

"Honey, if your father is going to get angry at anyone for this bill it's going to be me, and not you," She explained to me sweetly.

I sighed and did as she told me to do. It wasn't any use arguing with her about it because that would just turn into an even bigger argument about…well about everything.

"We should take these bags out to the car," I suggested.

"Are we finished shopping already?" My mother asked me disappointedly.

"For clothes, there's some other things that I'd like to look for," I answered with a mischievous smirk.

"Oh, I see. Well then, lead the way my dear."
