I blew the hair out of my face, or I should say I tried to blow the hair out of my face. I was sweating so horribly that it just stuck like glue. Why did it have to be so hot in May? I had only been at work for three hours and I was ready to go home and take a nice cold shower. I forced my mind to stay away from that thought, knowing it would make the next five hours drag on and on.
"Mia, can you make an iced mocha for me? I have three orders to cook up," my sister called to me from the grill. We worked at the small town's only café and restaurant that our parents owned. Since it was indeed the only café the town had to offer, we were always busy. On days like today, I wished it wasn't so.
"Yeah," I called to her, setting the rag down on the counter, saving the scrubbing for later. I started the espresso machine and grabbed some ice from the freezer. "Blended or no?" I called back to her.
"No thanks," I heard a man's voice from behind me. I turned to look at him. His name was Ron, and he had moved to our town a couple weeks ago with his family. He was a senior like my sister and myself, I didn't understand why they moved here a week before graduation, but he still got to graduate with our class, so I guess it doesn't matter what the reasons were. I was a little surprised to see him, he usually kept to himself, going straight home after school and never seen around town. He had that whole 'bad boy' look going for him. He had shaggy black hair that never looked combed, dark skin with tattoos visible on his arms and neck, his eyes were a nice hazel color and I noticed the friendliness in them, despite the rumors I heard around school. Below his eyes was a nice nose, though it looked like it may have been broken once, it wasn't too crooked, just a little. And his mouth was very nice, full but not so much they looked feminine, a piercing decorated his bottom lip in the center. He was tall, I probably only came up to his shoulder and I was average height for a girl. His body should be illegal He had broad shoulders and a skinny waist and hips, and in his tight shirt I could see all his muscles. Yes, his body should definitely be illegal.
I met his eyes again and saw a spark of amusement. I blushed, I had been staring. I shook my head, wishing I wasn't sweaty and in my work clothes, not that it would make much of a difference. He was probably there for my sister. Everyone loved Hope. She was beautiful, in fact if you looked in the dictionary under the word beauty, her name would probably be there… Okay maybe that was pushing it, but you catch my drift. We were twins, but looked absolutely nothing alike. While my hair was red, hers was blonde. My eyes were green, hers were blue. I was tall, she was short. I was fat, I won't beat around the bush and call myself fluffy or big boned or any of that shit, I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm fat. She on the other hand was not, she was toned and healthy looking, if not a little too thin. Yeah, you would never be able to tell we were sisters. I sighed.
"You should get it blended, it's really the best way to have it," I said, but began making it how he asked anyway. Once the drink was done I gave it to him, taking his money.
"This is really good, I don't think it could be better blended," he said after taking a few sips.
"Well, to each their own," I gave him his change. "Have a good day," I went to walk away when I heard his voice.
"Can I have my receipt?" He asked.
"Our machine is broken, sorry," I said without turning around. I grabbed my rag that was earlier abandon and started wiping the counter again.
"Can't you just write it out for me?" He insisted. I looked up at him, and found that he had sat on the other side of the counter, he was sipping from his straw and looking at me intensely.
"You know the price, it's still up on the register, why don't you write it down?" I asked, he was starting to bother me. I just wanted to do my work in peace. Usually I would have been friendlier, but I was hot and already tired and it was ten o' clock in the morning.
"You work here, it's your job," he argued. I sighed and dropped my rag again. "I'll even supply the pen and paper," he said, pulling out his wallet and a pen from behind his ear. I looked at him, kind of flabbergasted.
"If you have the stuff why don't you just write it down!" I practically screamed, I was reaching the end of my rope. I saw my sister raise her head sharply out of the corner of my eye. I turned to her with pleading eyes, I wanted this guy away from me. Plus if I got my sister over, he'd probably leave me alone. Everyone forgot about me when she was around. She wiped off her hands and came over.
"Is there a problem Mia?" She asked me, looking at the boy in front of us.
"Probably just another one of your admirers wanting to piss me off so I bring you over," I muttered so no one but me could hear it. I glared at the boy across the counter. He raised a pierced eyebrow at me.
"I'm just asking her to write down the price of the drink I paid for since the receipt machine is broken," he said, innocence in his tone. My sister looked at me pointedly.
"And you're denying him, why exactly?" She asked, putting her hands on her stupid skinny little hips.
"He has the pen, and the paper, and the price is right there on the screen, he has two perfectly attached hands, he can do it," I said with a pout. Since when did I act like I was twelve? "He probably just wanted to get you over here anyway, they all do," I said with a glare. She sighed and took the pen and paper from his hand, writing down the price of the drink.
"There you go, sorry about the inconvenience, my sister forgot to take her pills this morning," she said. But the guy didn't laugh. He looked at me peculiarly. I widened my eyes in the 'what are you looking at' fashion as my sister walked away.
"Did you really forget to take your medication?" He asked, seriously. I huffed.
"No sir, I did not. I'm not on any medication, but with the way the day is going, I wouldn't be surprised if I need some," I said tiredly.
"Don't joke about that, medication is serious," he said, taking another sip of his drink. "I'll be back tomorrow to try the blended, don't miss me too much," and with that he winked and walked away. As soon as he left Hope came over to me, a small smile on her face.
"You realize he was flirting with you, right?" She asked. I looked at her for a minute before I burst out laughing.
"Yeah, okay. Did you see him? He's gorgeous, he is just using me to get to you, I can guarantee it."
"Not everyone is after me Amelia," she said with a sigh. I cringed, I hated my full name. "You're pretty, and you've got a good heart even if you are a cranky squirrel sometimes," she said and I laughed.
"A cranky squirrel?" I asked, she nodded. "Girl, I don't know where you get your sayings, but you need to work on them."
By the next day I had already forgotten about Ron. It was a normal occurrence for guys to come in trying to gain Hope's attention somehow, and I didn't think it would be any different with this particular boy. So when ten o' clock rolled around and he came in again, I felt my frustration rise as the events of the previous day came to the front of my mind.
"Good morning Mia," he said in a chipper tone. I sighed and put on my best 'customer' smile.
"Good morning Ron, how may I help you?" My voice sounded fake, even to me, and I had to wince.
"I'm here to try a blended mocha, like I said yesterday," he said, looking me straight in the eyes. I sighed again. I leaned forward on the counter with my elbows.
"I know what you're doing and it's not going to work," I said quietly. He looked at me, confused.
"Oh yeah? What am I doing?"
"Coming in here every day, ordering different things, trying to gain Hope's attention, it won't work. I've seen many boys try and try again, and it just frustrates her," I told him. He mimicked my pose from the other side of the counter, his eyes boring into mine. I was kind of unnerved by how close his face was to mine. He was so close that I noticed the different flecks of color in those hazel eyes of his.
"They all come for her eh?" He asked. I nodded. "And does anyone ever come for you?" At that, I had to laugh.
"You're kidding me right?" I asked rhetorically. "No one wants to come for me, I'm the ugly sister," I gasped as his warm lips on mine shut me up. My eyes were wide as I stared at his face. He was looking right back at me, trying to read my reaction. I had never been kissed before, and this one was really awkward and not at all how I pictured my lip virginity being taken. I'm not sure how long we stayed like that but suddenly I was pulling away, reaching my hand up to my mouth. "What was that?" I asked weakly.
"I'm pretty sure that was a kiss, but if you need me to do it again so we can be sure I will," he said with a smirk.
"No… No, no, no, no, no, no, no," I said, backing away. I hit the other counter with my back and jumped forward with a yelp. "Why did you do that?" I asked, my eyes didn't want to close, I was just staring at him with eyes the size of my face I'm sure.
"You're not ugly. And I don't come here for your sister. I come here for you Mia," he told me honestly. I searched but couldn't see even a hint of a lie in his face.
"But, why?" I asked again.
"You intrigue me, and I think you're pretty, I don't care what anyone else says," he told me simply. "Now, can I get that blended mocha, or do I have to kiss you again?" I found my eyes were tearing up from not blinking so I forced myself to as I turned around to make his coffee. My hands were shaking and I kept dropping things. I swear I heard him laughing.
After multiple tries I finally got the blended mocha done. I watched as he took a drink of it, bringing the straw up to his lips that were on mine only minutes ago. My lips tingled at the thought. I shook my head. I didn't want to be thinking about how my kiss virginity had been stolen from me.
"The iced mocha is definitely better, I'd say," he told me after a few long sips from the straw. Damned lucky straw… No! I did not just think that. I pulled at my hair nervously.
"Well, I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong," I told him, trying to hide my nervousness now. He laughed and I gave him a small smile. He looked at me, the laughter still in his eyes even if it wasn't on his lips. Okay, I really needed to stop thinking about those soft, warm, very nice lips.
"Do you want to go on a date with me?" He asked. I was stunned for a minute. First he steals my lips virginity and then he wants to go on a date with me?
"No," I told him shortly. I watched as his smile left.
"Why not?"
"I don't know you. And you stole my lip virginity! I don't date thieves," I honestly needed to put my foot in my mouth, he didn't need to know the second part of that.
"You'd honestly never been kissed before?" He asked. I shook my head. "Wow, sorry. I thought everyone had been kissed by the time they got out of high school," he said. I crossed my arms.
"Way to make me feel like a loser, you aren't gaining any brownie points mister," I said with a scowl. I think I saw him blush.
"Sorry, that came out wrong. Please let me take you out on a date?" He asked. I almost gave in, he had that sort of kicked puppy look that was adorable. But I stood my ground.
"No," I said again. He sighed and stood up.
"I'm not giving up. I'm going to come in here every day and ask you again and again until you have no choice but to give in, to make me go away," he said with a smile.
"Well, at least you'll be good for business, have a good day," I said, waving.
He was true to his word. By week two he had tried almost every different kind of coffee we had. We bantered and had very differing opinions on the drinks. He was fun and made me laugh, but I refused to go on a date with him. I couldn't even go home and walk my dog without being harassed by him. He was my neighbor and I'm pretty sure he sat at his window, waiting for me to leave my house. I was flattered, but still annoyed.
"Why won't you go out with me? We've been talking for two weeks now Mia, you can't say you don't know me anymore," he wined as the third week was nearing. I sighed.
"Fine," I said finally.
"You always say -" he paused. "Wait, what?" He asked. I laughed.
"I said 'fine' I'll go on a date with you. Just one though, then you have to leave me alone," I told him seriously. A smile lit up his face and I'm pretty sure I could have melted right there. It was hard to believe that I caused this kind of reaction in a guy.
"You won't want to get rid of me afterwards, I promise," he said. He leaned over the counter and kissed me on the cheek. "I'll pick you up tonight at six, that'll give you enough time to get ready after work. Just dress casually," he said before walking out. I heard my sister laughing from behind me.
"That was great. Did you see him? It's like you couldn't have made him any happier. I can't believe you're going on a date. You have to let me do your hair and make up tonight sis, it'll be fun," she said. I sighed but found myself nodding.
"Hope, casual does not mean a dress and heels!" I screamed at my sister as she tried to get me to put on way too formal clothes. I pulled out a pair of jeans and a dressier shirt that made me look slimmer. It would suffice. "I'm already letting you do my hair and make-up I'm dressing myself," I told her, changing out of my work clothes.
"You're impossible. He may have said casual but I'm sure he didn't mean it," she argued. I ignored her and put on the outfit I chose for myself. I sat down in front of my mirror and let her do her magic. I was never one for make up, but as she put on eyeliner and mascara and a little bit of foundation to cover some red marks on my face, I wondered why. I looked good in make up. She brushed my hair out and straightened it. I looked good, but I already missed my waves.
When she was done the doorbell rang. I felt my stomach do summersaults. "You're going to be fine. Dates are fun, and they aren't real serious. It's not like you're going to marry him," Hope said, trying to calm me down. I took a deep breath.
"You're right, I'm going to be fine."
I went down and opened the door to see Ron there. He was dressed casually, nice jeans, a studded belt and a black t-shirt. I turned and smiled smugly at my sister. She rolled her eyes.
"You look nice," he said as we walked to his car. "I have to admit though, I like the wavy hair better," he said. I smiled.
"My sister got her hold on me. She tried putting me in a dress and heels, I don't even wear heels for things like prom. You look nice too, by the way," I added at the end.
"Dress and heals eh? That wouldn't work for where we're going, but maybe for some other date."
"I already told you, this one date is all you're getting. Then you have to leave me alone," I told him. He just laughed. "I'm serious!"
"And I told you that after this date, you're never going to want to get rid of me," he said smugly.
"Yeah, we'll see about that," I muttered. We drove to the town's unused park. It was on the far side of town and didn't have much but a swing set a picnic table and lots of trees. Needless to say, it was pretty much abandoned. I saw that the picnic table had a cloth over it and a basket sitting on it.
"You already set it up?" I asked with raised eyebrows, I was impressed.
"Yeah, I made everything myself. I had to book it too, I really wasn't expecting you to say yes so I didn't make as good of a meal as I would have. But it'll do," he said getting out of the car. He ran around as I was taking my seat belt off and opened my door, holding out his hand. I smile and took it.
"Thanks," I said shyly. He gave me one of his heart breaking smiles, and again I asked myself why he would want anything to do with me. He was so beautiful.
"No problem," he held my hand as we walked to the picnic bench. He opened the basket and took out electric candles. "You never know how the wind is going to be in may," he explained. I laughed.
"You thought of everything eh?" I asked with a smile on my face.
"I want your first date to be memorable. I usually don't go out of my way like this. I'm sure you wouldn't have been impressed if we hit up a fast food joint and went to the movies, you paying for yourself of course," he said with a teasing tone.
"You've really done that?" I asked, sitting down on the bench.
"Yeah, that gets rid of a girl real fast, makes me not feel like a dick cause I broke up with them," he told me. I laughed.
"Well there's one way to do it," I watched as he took out a couple containers, plastic silverware and paper plates. "Those are some fine dishes you have there," I said with a low whistle. He laughed.
"You're funny. I hate doing dishes, and I'm pretty sure my ma wouldn't have let me take out her good china," he said, opening the tops to the containers. Mac 'n cheese, strawberries that were chocolate covered, fruit salad, and some sort of pasta salad. I raised an eyebrow.
"This was 'last minute'?" I asked. I thought I saw him blush.
"I love to cook. Wait till you have the Mac, it's home made, not that box shit," he made a disgusted face and I laughed at it. He looked over at me and tilted his head, an unreadable look on his face. "You know, you are ten times prettier when you smile," he said sincerely. I blushed.
"Thanks," I said quietly, finding my shoes suddenly interesting. I wasn't use to compliments. I felt his hand on my face and he put a bit of pressure under my chin, forcing me to look up at him.
"You're welcome," he said quietly, running his thumb along my cheek and giving me a small smile. "Now let's eat, I'm famished!" He went to his side of the bench, sitting directly across from me. He put a little bit of everything on my plate, and when I say a little, I mean a lot.
"I'm never going to be able to eat all of this," I whined a little bit.
"Oh trust me, you will," he said before digging into his own food. I took a bite of the Mac 'n cheese first and I was not disappointed. I made a little noise in the back of my throat. It was so good, like orgasm in your mouth good…Well, I was guessing anyway considering I've never had an orgasm, but that's beside the point. It was just really good. "Oh man, please don't make those kind of noises," he said, looking up into my eyes, his were surprisingly intense as he stared at me. "They make me think of things I definitely shouldn't be thinking about, especially on the first date," he said honestly, causing me to blush hardcore.
"Sorry," I was able to squeak out. The dinner went by really fast, and like he said I was able to eat everything, though at the end I felt like I had to throw up because I was so full. He was extremely funny and complimented me more than anyone else in my life ever had. I was red through the whole dinner pretty much.
We made our way over to the swing set once we put everything back in the basket. It was dark out and the stars were shining and the moon was half way full. It was really pretty. I couldn't have picked a better night to say yes to a stupid little date which ended up being the most fun I'd probably ever had. I was still trying to wrap my head around the fact that he wanted me. We were silent for awhile, both of us swinging slightly, our feet still on the ground.
"Why me?" I asked suddenly. I hid my face behind my hair so I didn't have to look at him when I asked.
"You just seemed really down to earth and were really friendly to everyone. I notice those kinds of things you know? Like, so many people are just rude to others because they think they're above them, when really they're not. But you had a nice word and a smile for everyone. Man, your smile, that's what got me. It's like someone punched me in the gut when I saw it, only it felt good," he laughed lightly after that. "That's the best way to describe it I guess," he said. I smiled, I was blushing again and I couldn't blame the heat because the night had cooled down significantly. I didn't say anything afterwards, I didn't really know what to say.
As I was looking down at my feet, suddenly I couldn't see them anymore. All I could see was Ron's face, and his hazel eyes looking up at me. His hands were on my face and he ran his thumbs along my jaw. Butterflies erupted in my stomach. "I know you may not believe me, but I think you're beautiful," he whispered. I gave him a small smile. "Can I kiss you?" He asked me.
"Well, I guess since you asked this time it can't technically be called stealing," I said with a grin. He laughed before his face started coming closer. And then his lips were on mine. I closed my eyes this time and hesitantly brought my hand up to lay it on his arm. He pushed forward slightly, tilting his head to one side. I'd never been kissed besides that day in the coffee shop, but I didn't think it got much better than this. And then I felt his tongue as it licked at my lips and my eyes popped open to see him looking at me, his eyes half closed. He pulled away.
"Too much?" He asked. I shook my head.
"No, but I've never done this before, so I'd probably be bad at it," I admitted with a blush. He smiled at me.
"You're doing great so far," he said and kissed me again. He pulled back suddenly with a shit eating grin on his face. "I told you that you wouldn't want to get rid of me by the end of the night," he said, amusement in his voice. I rolled my eyes.
"Way to kill the moment," I said with a laugh. No, he was right. I didn't want to get rid of him. At least for now.
So just another one shot… I hated one shots before I wrote Interview with a Rockstar. But now, I get little ideas in my head, and I want to write them. And it makes me not feel as lazy when I don't update my chapter stories for awhile. Anyway, tell me what you think. Thank you.
