I should probably get over Charlie Chaplin and write about something else. But I don't see that happening any time soon. Especially since I finally saw Limelight yesterday and basically fell madly in love with it after the first two minutes.

Most of the allusions in the third and fourth verses are pretty exaggerated, and the second verse is from the movie Chaplin rather than his actual life. I probably could've avoided that and made this more historically accurate, but it's a song, not a biography.

And I'm assuming that the names Adenoid, Verdoux, and Calvero belong to the Chaplin estate in some way. Please don't sue.

You propped my heart up on a pedestal

Though it don't mean much

I've found the sparkle I'd been longing for

The silence was enough

I've captured lightning in a bottle

It's time to set it off

It's time to set it off

.

Sam Warner's time has done the worst for you

And Doug's not far behind

Miss Scarlet's stealing all your revenue

And the town's grabbed your pride

Pianos choking in the dusty room

I'm sure that they don't mind

I'm sure they don't mind

.

Take off your hat

And set down your cane

It's best to burn out before you fade away

Before you fade away

.

Whole rooms start thundering in comic rain

A storm fit for a king

Blind girls, they fainted on the windowpane

Praying for a ring

Still we'll cut your throat with sharpened cellophane

And you won't feel a thing

No, you won't feel anything

.

Take off your hat

And set down your cane

It's best to burn out before you fade away

Before you fade away

.

Adenoid twisted off the knob for you

Now we'll take your green card

Verdoux brought out a scary side or two

Now we know them by heart

Calvero said it all to burn for you

Clowns just fall too hard

They fall down so hard!

.

Take off your hat

And set down your cane

It's best to burn out before you fade away

.

It's all been done before

You're out of plots to save

The cops and pretty girls are waiting at the gate

Let them lead you away
