This is a poem that was inspired by the book "A Child Called It" by Dave Pelzer. If you haven't read it I recommend you do, but be aware it's terribly sad. It gave me such a new insight into the horrifying problem of child abuse and it moved me so much that I found myself writing this in English class without even realizing it.

My Last Night

Yelling, crying broken glass
Hitting, thudding blood on brass
Someone's drunk, I don't ask
They rip and tear because it's their task

Footsteps stumbling down the hall
I curl in the shadows; a tight ball
Tripping, falling they curse my name
They find me there—they've won the game

A swish, a thud I cry in pain
Blood and tears fall like rain
fight and shriek and pull away
But the battle's lost; I have to pay

Laughing, shouting they close the door
I lie broken on the floor
Dripping, staining, flickering light
Soon it's over; my last night
