The stage lights flashed on the dance floor like we were at a rave only the music that was playing wasn't techno or club music. The contrast of the previous elegant ballroom to the lights and music was surreal. The idea of the masquerade ball seemed fun for the first few minutes until the DJ started playing horrid music and my inability to ask a stranger to dance kicked in. "That's it. I'm fed up with this stupid music. I'm getting the DJ to play something bearable." A girl stood up from her seat and faced me. "Don't worry about me if I don't come back." She weaved into the mass of people. Almost a few minutes of disappearing, the music changed to something more danceable. Some of the boys started hardcore dancing before some chaperones told them to stop. Despite all of their efforts, the music didn't stop.
"May I have this dance?" a familiar voice asked. I couldn't quite place his voice or if I plainly didn't know this person at all. He held out his hand waiting for me to take it. Instead, I shook my head.
"I'm bad at dancing and I might break your feet before we even start." At this remark, he started laughing.
"It won't hurt to try." I reluctantly took his hand. He moved my arms into the basic dancer's position. One hand on his shoulder and the other in his. He leaned in and whispered, "Follow my steps and you should be fine."
I shifted my feet to match his. Miraculously, I didn't step on his feet the whole time. It took me a few moments to realize that we were the center of attention in the center of the dance floor and a spotlight moved with us. This wasn't supposed to happen. I let go of him and fled the scene. I stood on the balcony for a few breaths of fresh air. "There you are!" The girl who left earlier came back. "Do you want to go now?"
"Let's go." As soon as we got into her car, we took off our masks leaving for our next destinations. She drove me home and told me that she'd see me on Monday. The next morning was exhausting and lazy. I opened my computer while drinking some orange juice. It notified me that someone sent me a message. The sender almost made me choke on the juice.
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Hey. How was last night?
2LftFeet4U: Hey Nate. It was alright. Weren't you there?
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Yeah I was. I just wanted to know what you thought.
2LftFeet4U: I see… Did anything interesting happen?
ItsGoingDownFromHere: About that…
ItsGoingDownFromHere: I met someone interesting. I managed to dance with her.
2LftFeet4U: Really? Did she step on your feet?
I decided to indulge him for a bit.
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Lol. She claims she's a bad dancer but I proved her wrong.
2LftFeet4U: By…
ItsGoingDownFromHere: She didn't step on my feet once. Unfortunately, she ran away when people started paying attention to us.
Should I tell him that it's me?
2LftFeet4U: Do you like her now or something?
ItsGoingDownFromHere: I don't even know who she is.
2LftFeet4U: Are you going to look for her?
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Yes but if she doesn't want to be found, I'll leave her be.
ItsGoingDownFromHere: She reminded me of you.
2LftFeet4U: What about her reminds you of me?
ItsGoingDownFromHere: She's kind, shy, and I don't know. I can't really describe it It's there though.
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Still there?
2LftFeet4U: Yeah.
ItsGoingDownFromHere: Meet me at Essence…in ten minutes.
ItsGoingDownFromHere signed off.
I saved that conversation as the first civil conversation I ever had with him. Now, I realized that it was actually the second.
I lifted my mask and placed it into my bag before leaving the house. My fingers touched the soft rim on the mask. He grinned when he saw me but frowned when he saw the mask I held.
"I'm that girl and I don't know about you but I want to forget about last night."
"Well, I don't. I want to remember it. I actually asked Kylie to tell me what you were going to wear so I could mess with you." That girl I was with. "But I didn't because I wanted to dance with you and show that you're not that bad and you should show more confidence. I wanted to tell you that I love you like a friend and possibly something more."
I stepped away from him. He stepped closer. "You revealed parts of me that I didn't even notice until I met you. Because of that, I wish for you to come with me to the ends of this ridiculous place and into a new world where we can prosper."
I shook my head unable to believe him. "No. You're insane. I can't even deal with you a few minutes a day. You're not you. The real Nate died a year ago."
His eyes widened as his outer layer disappeared into his true form. The fairy-like creature before me grinned, "I'll see you around dearie. I won't let you go so easily again."
He disappeared into thin air with the sound of a snap. Until next time it is.
