Chapter 1: The Smile of an Angel

"Who do you think you are?!" the bully questioned angrily at me. He was forced on the ground by my right leg. I flinched with anger and grinned, my eyes twitched, making me look scary.

"I think I'm Hikari Oshiro," I told him, glaring straight at the bully.

"Well, you have no right to put your foot on me!" the bully yelled at me, pissing me off some more. I pressed him to the ground harder with my foot.

"You were the one who was bullying this innocent student in the first place!" I said, pointing at the little girl who was on the ground, scared with tears in her eyes. He took a look at her and glared at her angrily like he was blaming her for being forced on the ground. I had enough of this jerk. I let my foot off of his back and he turned around to face me. Still angry, I took the front of his shirt and lift him off the ground, gripping tight on his shirt that I must've choked him. I glared at him and got ready to punch him with my left fist, thinking of giving him a good jab on the face.

When I was about the punch the bully, the little girl screamed, "Stop!"

I turned my attention to the little girl in a quick second after she said that. My glare turned into pity, seeing the little girl terrified and crying a lot. I was disappointed, I was thirsty for some punching but I guess not, if it's the right thing to do. I let go of the scared wimp, letting him drop on the ground. He was about to cry, but then ran away, frightened. I saw him run off then I paid attention to the crying little girl. Her eyes were closed; it must be that she doesn't want to see my terrifying face. I walked slowly towards her, every step I was taking made her tremble more and more. When I took the final step, she stopped trembling, maybe because she didn't hear any more steps. I kneeled down and gave her a hug. The girl suddenly opened her eyes in shock. She didn't say anything but I felt her grip onto my shirt. I'm a monster to have a girl cry and see what a terrible thing I was gonna do… I let go of her and we stared at each other for a while, eye to eye.

"He's gone," I said calmly. "The bully's gone…"

The girl looked around to see if I was lying, that made me giggle. She stared at me laughing and soon joined in.

"Suzune Ibaraki," the girl told me in a quiet voice.

"Huh?" I asked, needing her to repeat what she said because I couldn't hear her at all.

"Suzune Ibaraki, that's my name. Call me whatever you want," Suzune said louder than she did last time.

"I'll call you Suzu-chan then," I smiled and Suzune stared at me with open eyes, in shock.

"Tenshi…" Suzune said in a quiet voice again.

"What?" I asked her, clueless.

"I said tenshi which means angel…" Suzune said with a smile of a little girl. She continued, "…Because you have the smile of an angel."

I blushed, she embarrassed me. No one has ever told me that before in the 16 years I've lived.

A smile like an angel… That thought made me smile again as the wind blew through my long white hair. My purple eyes stared at Suzune.

"Thank you," I thanked her as the green grass we sat on whistled as the wind blew on it and us.

"Your welcome," Suzune replied, her voice so soft like a pure child. But wait, she is not "like" a pure child, she is one.

"My name is…" I said without finishing my introduction.

"Hikari Oshiro…" Suzune finished it for me. "I've heard about you, you're the new student everybody's talking about, aren't you?" I looked at her, but not that surprised. I do hear a lot of people talk about me when I walk past them.

"Yup, I'm Hikari Oshiro," I told her with a normal face. "Call me whatever you want."

Suzune smiled at that idea and stated, "Since you're shortening my name to Suzu-chan, then I'll shorten your name and call you Hika-chan." That idea was brilliant; I wouldn't even come up with that.

"Okay," I said, agreeing to her response. We were quiet for a moment and Suzune got impatient and killed the silence.

"Hika-chan," Suzune finally said and I looked up at her.

"Yes?" I asked her and her smile disappeared.

She hesitated to say what she wanted to say for a moment but she slapped herself into saying it. I looked at her with wide eyes when she actually slapped herself.

"Do you live by yourself?" she asked, looking at me with one eye and the other closed because of the pain on her cheek. I just continued looking at her, speechless. I was about to say something but she interrupted me with, "I'm sorry, it's a stupid question!" She bowed her head down with her eyes closed. I giggled and she looked up at me quickly with wide eyes. She blushed with embarrassment.

"It's not a stupid question," I told her after I finished laughing. "And yeah, I live by myself." Suzune's embarrassment turned into sadness.

"Why is that?" she asked as her long brown hair floated around behind her as the wind blew on us. Her big brown eyes stared at me, waiting for my response.

Is she eager to know about my life? I asked myself as her impatience grew.

"Because I have no family," I finally answered her question. Her sad expression didn't change at all.

"Do you know why?" she demanded for more information about me which I found weird. What is she up to? I answered her question anyways.

"Nope," I replied. "And what's weird is that I have no recorded information about my past and I don't know how I was born." Suzune looked down at the ground, her bangs covering her eyes for a while.

"I know why," she said, still looking at the ground. My eyes widened, I was stunned by her response. I wanted to say something but nothing came out of my mouth. She stood up, still looking down, and walked around me and stopped right behind me. She took my hair and tied it gently with a hair tie. She put her left hand on my left shoulder and her right hand on the back of my neck. Her smooth fingers tickled my neck. "This mark on the back of your neck…"

How did she know about that mark on the back of my neck?! I thought with my eyes still wide in shock. I sat on the grass quietly. I felt her fingers tremble and the back of my neck felt wet. Are those tears? Suzune let her hands of off me. I turned around to see her face and her eyes were wide with tears coming down. It wasn't a little bit of tears, it was a lot.

"Hikari-sama? Is that you Hikari-sama?" she asked in a weak voice but there was joy in it. I didn't answer her; I just looked at her in confusion. No one has ever added a "sama" to my name. I don't really know about my life, but how am I special to Suzune? The bell rang; I forgot that we were in school.

I got to get to class… I thought to myself and got up from the ground. I looked at Suzune and walked away slowly.

"Wait, Hikari-sama!" she shouted after me. I turned around to look at her.

"Meet me back here after school," I told her and I continued walking, leaving her alone there. She smiled and got to class too. That was the weirdest lunch I ever had.
